  • Note that Bernard Herrmann's typically brilliant score quoted a few phrases here and there from Paul J. Smith's score for Disney's "20,000 Leagues Under the Sea," It was obvious that Charles Schneer's production crew was trying to subtlely tie this sequel to the first film for continuity's and, for the most part, it succeed very well. Although we saw Capt. Nemo die in "Leagues," this film casts that scene in ambiguity Herbert Lom as Nemo is very consistent with James Mason's original take.

  • Our local TV station used to show this during the summers when I was a kid. I never was able to watch the entire movie because my mom would make me do chores halfway through. It always seemed to be around the giant chicken part.

  • A wonderful movie in its day. Even now it is still a very watchable movie.

  • this is an al time classic- I grew up watching this - Ray Harryhausen is the master at slow motion action

  • This movie isn't "cheesy". It was incredibly well made especially when you consider it was released in 1961.

I've seen new movies that can't hold a candle to this one.

  • I've always loved this movie -- and by "always" I mean for this past half century. The combination of Harryhausen's monsters, some solid acting and a great score keep this film memorable for me. Thank-you for posting such an old-fashioned thrill!

  • I haven't seen this in forever! Thank you for posting it!

  • ahhh yes... excellent film and great fun... a lot better than some of the recent stuff... I'll have to get this on dvd... cheers ;-)

  • Love this movie; one of my alltime favorites.

  • Check out the frames at around 7:55 and you can clearly see a TV aerial on the second chimney from the left! I don't think they had TVs around the time of the American Civil War do you? Great film though - one of my favourites, along with The Time Machine (1960), First Men in the Moon and Journey to the Center of the Earth.

  • I haven't seen this one before, though I read the book, which like 20000 Leagues is one of Verne's longest. I don't remember a Reb being among the castaways, but at least they haven't stuck the token romantic interest woman in the mix. Another Charles Schneer production, good, as I've never seen a bad one.

  • thanks for posting this movie its a classic, have fond memories of seeing it at

the cinemar when iwas a kid.

did you know the crab came from harrods in london

  • Loved this movie since I first saw it as a kid in the 60's. Top notch in every dept...I think Herbert Lom was the BEST Capt Nemo ever. And the score by Bernard Hermann is absolutely magnificent....perfect for an adventure film like this. And of course the stop motion effects by Ray Harryhausen are wonderful. THANKS for sharing this 60's classic with us! :)

  • thank you for posting.

  • thanks for posting one of the best of its time.

  • fuck yeah!!!! i love this movie.

  • To be honest, I really miss these films. When you think of the churned out crap in Hollywood today, where all Females a depicted as nothing more than "Gold Digging Tramps" and all Males are shown as Steroid abusing muscle bound idiots. No wonder, no one bothers to go to the Cinema anymore.

  • @starquant true dat. I hardly keep track of what's coming out these days. I don't even care if copyright won't let the new movies on youtube, keeps this place from getting trashed up by that crap. I'm havin' a jolly good time watching the classics and then reading peoples comments about "o, you should watch this too." Always a treat to find something I've never even heard of

    cheers ^V^

  • What an awesome fucking soundtrack, it gives me chills, and the flick is kinda cheesie, but it still is Magickal, to me at least! Thanx "mysterious Island" dude or dudette! :o)

  • Thank you very much for posting this movie , I remember seeing when i was a child back in the 70's and I still like seeing it . It is too bad that the movie industry ndoes not make movies like that anymore . All what we see today is garbidge on tv .

  • @jasonargomov OH MY FUCKINH GOD!!! Thank you so much for uploading this. I've not seen this film in like...YEARS! My dad and I used to watch it together a lot, and I do mean a lot that is until he passed away. Brings back so many memories.

  • I remeber this movie playing on tbs saturday mornings... : [/---

  • @Airdriver-- I remember the animated version. I think it was one those cartoons sponsered by Kenner Toy company.

  • This is a favourite. It never loses it's appeal.

  • I know I'm not crazy but I remember seeing a cartoon version of Mysterious island on tv back in the 70's. It followed the novel's stroyline a lot more closely than this movie. Anyone else recall seeing this?

  • @airdriver there is a cartoon version. It is a 1975 film made by an Australian outfit. Wikipedia has it listed. I was looking for it online also.

  • @airdriver Type in Land Before Time.

  • @airdriver hmm thev closest i canbget is 80 days around the world

  • I'm 55 and this movie absolutely captured my imagination as a child.

  • @americanjedi77 The book Mysterious Island is a sequel to the book 20,000 Leagues. The movies of the two books are unrelated, since they were made by different studios (Disney and Columbia). Plus, Nemo died in the Leagues movie (but not in the book) so a sequel to that movie is impossible.

  • @DrBreakfastMachine "Plus, Nemo died in the Leagues movie": Thank god movie-producers learn from other producers mistakes and let Rambo survive in "First Blood" thus allowing a sequel!

  • @DrBreakfastMachine

a movie death is never final. you can always find a trick to let the heroes re-appear.

  • Thank you for posting this movie, one of my favorites. Cheesy maybe but these were good movies of that time.

  • the book was insanely well written :)

  • @americanjedi77

    Yes.

  • BBBBEEEEESSSSSTTTTTT EVAR

  • This is the first movie I remember seeing as a Child. Thank you for posting it>

  • @americanjedi77 Yes. But you have to read the very entertaining

(and informative-for the time) book. I don't want to spoil the

surprise at the end, but you will be surprised even though you

    have seen the movie.

  • yes definately one of the top 10 best Sifi classics...thanks for posting it

  • @SnooperSquirrelFilms u said it dude! *waves*

  • the best....................

  • This looks delightfully cheesy! :-D

  • @ShawDAMAN It sure is aint it, but dammit if I don'twatch this movie over and over, the alternative that's out there today, well it kinda is lame and non-imaginative, what are they outta ideas? *shrugs*

  • @ShawDAMAN Yes but fun to watch! Loved this movie as a boy!

  • One of the all-time greatest music openings. Bernard Herrmann was a genius!

  • yes I agree he also did the sound track for jason and the argonuats but this is uterly fantastic..& to think this is the london phillhormonic crazy good !! love Ray H just incredible when you think about how much work this took

  • @DangerouslyYours Yesiree! :o)

  • Thank you for posting this! I have an old copy of a copy on VHS, it's great to see it in a better quality vid. I used to watch this with my dad when i was a kid, it was our Saturday matinee. He had it on reel to reel. Thanks for taking the time to upload it!!!

  • No one has a word to say about Herrmann's wonderful score? This is one of the greatest, and most impressive themes in movies EVER!!!

  • @tudnut1 It sure is an awesome score aint it!

  • I remember watching this when I was 4 years old. I have never forgotten it but I never knew what it was called.

Today I complete my 6 year search for this movie and its name. The only thing I had to go by was that it had a giant crab, bee and a balloon in it. Also that it was made around the same time as "Swiss Family Robinson."

    I love this movie!!

  • im just reading this book

  • Is it any good?

  • me too its great

  • What do you think of it? It is my favorite classic literature book of all time, and I read it, or rather listen to it with my screen reading software, several times a year. I recently started reading it again, and I usually fall asleep to it, picking up where I fell asleep the night before. I really hope you like it, and please let me know if you have any questions concerning it. Like I said, I've read it, and Verne's other works, times too numerous to count, being a huge fan of the genre.

  • I remember watching this when I was a kid! : ) Thanks for posting

  • same

  • The book was very good, though more than 600 pages. Can't take the time to read it again. Luckily this movie brings back memories :)

  • odd, I have a book that is only 300-400 pages.... Maybe your thinking of the return to the mysterious island? or maybe you just have a different version (I heard a lot of his work was heavily censored)

  • why is it so dark?

  • Because it's at night.

  • No Harryhausen monsters in the balloon escape sequence but IMO it's one of the greatest sequences in this film, from the initial escape to their landing at sea near the Island, it's pure Jules Verne...just classic & Bernard Herman's music tops it off. This sequence cannot be faulted...

  • One of the best Harryhausen / Schneer movies...The balloon escape sequence is just about perfect in terms of cinema / editing...very dramatic sequence....excellent acting...my favorite line 'now maybe this ballon will come down in your territory or in mine, whichever it is, we go our seperate ways & we don't discuss politics!' paraphrasing.

  • old movies are the best especially the double features that they sadley dont have anymore!

  • Thank you for adding this classic!

  • I LOVE this movie!!

    Best line...."that's a mighty big crab!"....LOL

Wait for it, it's later on :)

  • This is one of my favorites. Takes me back to a better time. I grew up with this on WGN in Chicago. It was played on Sundays on the show Family Classics during the mid 70s. The best part was the music by the great Bernard Herrmann. I think this is his best. All of the titles are great. I own the CD. Hard to find I mite add.

  • OMG!! Thats where i remember seeing this movie as well. Sunday afternoon on WGN(channel 9) with Frazier Thomas. Family Classics was awesome.

  • Ray Harryhausen is right up there with Jim Henson and Stan Winston for making movies nice to watch

  • it certainly has a hard time loading

  • One of my favorite Harryhausen movies!!!

I have copies of just about all of them on DVD, but it is really a treat to see them here! Love the stirring soundtrack by Bernard Herrmann! Thanks for posting this fantastic film! I wish someone would post the original "Journey to the Center of the Earth!"

  • Super classic movie...thanks for posting it
