The 400c is the marine version, so comes with detailed ocean charts, and a little land detail (coastal). There is the exact same model with topo maps (detailed land)...I think it's the 400t.
One can also buy the detailed topo map chip for the 400c to use as a land gps. I think it's around $120 or so.
That's a useful video. It seems that these Oregons have very bad visibility in direct sunlight as some people suggest. Although it can't compete with 60CSx in screen visibility it has twice as many pixelx as 60CSx making it better for detailed map view.
That's correct. To judge the screen competently one would need to have the unit in his hands. I would believe then that visibility of the screen is sufficient. Do you have any idea how long is the battery life wih backlight turned off?
does the 400c lack in topo maps of the land or is is more or less just have detailed water way maps?

Actually, I think it does very well in direct sun. I can turn the backlight down and save battery power. This vid does not do it justice.

Not sure...I do turn the brightness up or down depending on conditions. I also use lithium batts as they last MUCH longer.

but what is the screen with the cartoon frog on it?
and does it make sounds when buttons are pushed,
and when a turn is coming up?

Its not a frog, its a fish and it tells you the best time of day to catch fish and hunt.
It does have a tone "on-off" switch
not sure if it makes a tone when a turn is coming, I dont use it to navigate with the car

There is a frog...it's on the Trip Computer screen when in Geocaching profile.
It will beep, but I turn those off to save batt power.
