Mills' charge of thievery was nonsensical If the captain planned to steal cheese, why would he take it off the ship and then go on an 18-month sea journey? If the captain was providing for relatives, just how much cheese would he have to steal to make it worthwhile? Considering all that, Mills was lucky to get off with only two dozen. In the context of the times, he would have received six dozen or more. Or beaten unconscious and then given a few dozen more.

I dont have a problem with this form of punishment for men. I actually think it should be brought back. 25 - 50 lashes of a cat-o-nine tails would strike enough fear into any man who wanted to commit a crime which which came with with a flogging sentence.

It is particularly appropriate for youthful first offenders who are otherwise decent "kids," as they would get a painful and humilitating lesson on the consequences of crime, but be spared the rigors of prison life. What is worse? A few dozen lashes on your back, or getting your teeth knocked out to facilitate your cellmates' desire for perverted sex?
@jimbeau1uk Another possibility is that, if a 20-something business executive drinks too much at a party, and gets cited for DUI, we should give him a public flogging instead of putting him jail. He will get the message, but is less likely to ruin his career if he does not have to go to jail.
@jimbeau1uk well why not equal opportunity flogging? Men and women both, regardless of race, color, creed, religion, sexual orientation, etc. You do the crime, you get flogged, doesn't matter who you are.

I first saw this film last Christmas and found it absolutely amazing. Both Brando and Howard shone in this film.
