@SHPrada so purchase their stuff, there's the actual playing lesson. Otherwise, you can listen and understand what he is saying and put it on practice, not everything has to be demosntrated note by note, that's just lazy.
doing trills as long as you can without picking is great on building speed. you know 1st-2, 1-3, 1-4, 2-4,3-4 etc. etc I always get noticeably faster after practicing that a bit each day
how i learned to alt. pick was i learned the song my curse by killswitch engage the intro is a perfect way for someone to learn to alt pick that riff is a great example
@stevegrierson LTD's are serious instruments. Some of the are far superior to guitars two or three times the price, so if he happens to have found one he likes and that he thinks is really good for him, then the ideal that the more expensive/handmade guitar must immediately better can be lost.
Paul Gilbert discussing in one of his instructional videos that he likes to start alt picking phrases off with an upstroke, at least I believe that's what he said. Anyways, I found that starting certain phrases with an upstroke helped me play faster for whatever reason.
hi i've been playing/practising semi-seriously with economy picking for more than a year now but i'm still horrendously slow. i tried alternate picking at the start but jus found it iincredibly cumbersome, but most lessons ive seen recommend alternate picking when practising. of course i'm naturally left-handed, and it might be that i improve slower due to that, but should i change my picking style?? anyone can reply to this btw
@TotalRetardedness Without seeing your picking style I can't really say specifically what you may need to change, but I am also a lefty that plays right handed. @TotalRetardedness No problem...there are plenty of exercises for alternate picking that will help just search youtube for alternate picking exercises and you will find plenty of them. You could even create some of your own based upon what ever specific things are causing you problems. Even playing basic major and minor scales using strict alternate picking will help or anything that has you skipping strings and starting on another string with an upstroke are challenging for me personally.
Really good and simple but thorough explanation. In my own experience playing with an actual drummer can really get you in the zone and somehow your hand just moves as fast as it should..faster than you think it can. It's a total natural high when you can rip something out that you have no idea you were capable of

@SatyrX09 Yup! I've heard of him. Although it's rare I listen to A7X, or much metalcore, since it's not my cup of tea. But there sure are some outstanding players in the genre! =)
@xXokcoolXx Yeah, I can only think of one person who has a versatile guitar playing and that's Corey Beaulieu, he's in a metalcore band but really outstanding player... lol I actually mentioned ZackyV because he says "You Know" much much more...
@SatyrX09 there are a lot of versatile guitarists. Nuno Bettencourt, Jimmy Page, Alex Lifeson, Steve Howe, Rick Emmett, Steve Hackett, John Frusciante, Paul Gilbert etc. Not comparing their chops, but all these guys are very versatile.
Hi Andy, I've been practising guitar for a year and a half now... Is there a tutuorial for the riffs for the song "The End".. I'm just not able to follow that song..
I've felt the elbow strain at times. How do i get over it??
@karnivorus dude fucking same. I've been trying to pick fast for years and hearing the 45 degrees thing (even though I kind of already knew it) has made a huge difference. Since yesterday. Ridiculous that such a small thing can make such a huge difference. Wish I had seen this vid years ago!
I will add that it's a good idea when approaching anything to do with picking - unplug the guitar and play 1 hour a day like that. 3-octave scales and arpeggios are a must in order to achieve string-balance.
Paul Gilbert's "Outside Picking" is also a must otherwise you will favour downstrokes and not develop proper, even technique.
Frank Gambale's "Guitar workout" is superb for a weak right hand.
I have a question - I find that when I try to play an alternate picking pattern over 5 or 6 strings that i need to shift my elbow because if I didn't then by the time I reach the high notes my wrist is on too much of an angle and I tend to screw up the higher notes. Is there a way I can overcome this?
@shreddernuo Haha no problem. And most music stores, at least ones that cater to guitarists, have them. I got mine at the local shop. If there's a Guitar Center near you, I know they have them, but pretty much anywhere that sells guitar accessories. If you don't have any luck there, it's really easy to find them online. Just Google "guitar footstool." And most are adjustable, so if you're really short or tall, or just sitting in a different-sized chair, you should be okay. Hope that helps!
@shreddernuo Yeah, I'm the same way about that, and it's called the classical position (since that's how classical guitarists are taught to hold it. Go figure. :P). I started off playing on my right knee, but I signed up for a classical guitar class, and when I started doing it the other way (combined with a footstool), it was so much easier reaching all of the notes, and I didn't have to strain myself near as much to play! So I definitely recommend trying it, along with the foot rest.
i also strain with my elbow a lot, i really can't gain speed in my right hand. i've been playing for like a year and a half and my tremolo using my wrist and alternate picking is really slow. i tried starting slow and moving up on the speed, but i still get my wrist stuck halfway and i lose speed. how can i improve that? i've been practicing and trying to get shredding down for about 10 months.
@intii93 judging from your post, you have the patience and discipline to get things done. Just make sure your wrist is relaxed (firm but relaxed. squeezing the pick for high attack and small movement is different from flexing your whole arm). It's just going to take a great deal longer than 1 1/2 years. time is on your side, take advantage of it and you'll be shredding like it's cloud 9 in no time.
@tastytasters thanks a lot! i've been practicing for these past 3 days according to what you said, and even though it still sounds pretty sloppy, i've managed to keep my speed up without putting too much effort or pressure on my wrist. i can already notice my arm not getting tired and the back part of it + the elbow not hurting anymore. guess it's just a matter of practice with the best technique possible. once again, many thanks.
@dc08bfmv Start slow man ;) when youre'starting to feel you're straining the arm, you're going to fast ;) Try a real simple lick, like the first one Andy showed here, and start playing it at 100 bpm triplets, or even slower, so that you play it perfectly without any effort! Then go up 3 bpm every thime untill it's perfect and without straing again, and move up that way!
that tip about angling the pick rather than having it flat to the string really did make all the difference to me. just started using it the other day and all the little sloppy mistakes were instantly eliminated.
muscle memory and the importance of being super relaxed in both arms and hands even at fast speeds are the key things you must know to get good at this. It never gets mentioned almost which is a real shame.
y pick when u can use legato? i admit clean fast alternate picking can be very helpful when switching strings. but on the same string y not just use hammers and pulls?
@usetheforce93 Different sound, different feel. Alternate picking sounds way more pronounced and accurate, while legato/tapping sounds way more fluid, that's all!
i actually don't have much problems with picking i can alternate pick quite quick and clean...even with switching strings...i have the problem with my left hand keeping up
my penny dropped once, but when I tried to pick it up I took an arrow to the knee.

1. Find the bone in your hand 2. Place it where the low e-string meets the bridge

that tip about angling the pick rather than having it flat to the string really did make all the difference to me. just started using it the other day and all the little sloppy mistakes were instantly eliminated.

muscle memory and the importance of being super relaxed in both arms and hands even at fast speeds are the key things you must know to get good at this. It never gets mentioned almost which is a real shame.

y pick when u can use legato? i admit clean fast alternate picking can be very helpful when switching strings. but on the same string y not just use hammers and pulls?
usetheforce93 9 months ago
@usetheforce93 Alternate picking sounds different from legato.
Sp4Rk3x3 9 months ago
@usetheforce93 Different sound, different feel. Alternate picking sounds way more pronounced and accurate, while legato/tapping sounds way more fluid, that's all!
