Bravo Sir !!! Very cool layout and impressive collection, the shot from about 2:40 on is outstanding.... Really enjoyed that. Merry Christmas to you and yours from The Doc & Rooch Show !!!
Hey Steve, this is better than sitting at a crossing in my car with the arms down when I am late for an appointment. Say, did you ever find that little bird I keep hearing in your garage? What do you feed it?
What a racket that must be live as you hear that Big Boy all the way from the back of the layout! Beautiful, like a needle pulling thread, I had to watch this beauty several times!
I could never pull that 60-car thing off -- I only have O-31 curves at the corners (O-72's on one part of the straightaway for variation). I never realized that K-Line even made a Big Boy! I have an MTH Challenger (UP) that steals the show every time I run it! I have yet to stump it for pulling power, either! Remarkable engines! And the smoke out of that MTH might actually be illegal in some fire marshal circles! :-) Does your K-Line have smoke or sound? (Sorry I'm drifting a bit here...)
I know what you mean about the MTH smoke units, I have a few. K-Line made the semi scale Big Boy and an Allegheny available with or without TMCC. My Big Boy does not have TMCC but it has a great digital whistle. My Allegheny has the TMCC option and I love the sounds even though I only run conventional. Both have smoke, but K-Lines smoke units leave a lot to be desired.
So is that a Marx Big Boy (or at least modified from Marx parts)? I can't tell from the video, but it looks lie a Challenger (2 sets of 6 drivers instead of 8). I see you also have a Flying Yankee by Lionel? I have one that took a dive at a train show a couple of years ago -- I need to get that running again! Thanks for posting!
I just reread your header -- it's a K-Line engine, right? Some folks clutter their items out-of-order in the titles, and I have a short memory, apparently, so I goofed it up! Right???...
Correct, it is the K-Line Big Boy. It is almost exactly 3/16 scale so it is perfect for the Marx 3/16 scale lithograph cars. It would also go well with American Flyer 3/16 but I do not have enough of them for a good string. It is a 4-8-8-4, each set of 8 is articulated with it's own motor.
The Flying Yankee is the new reissue by Lionel from earlier this year.
I have 3 circles of the K-Line 072 (027) that I picked up from a hobby shop that was going out of business. Someday when I get to my real layout..................
That locomotive has great pulling power. Too bad you couldn't use some of those 72" (O27) curves that K-Line made a few years ago. I would like to get some while my local hobby shop still has some.

Thanks John. I love the sight of these long runs, but the prep time is quite extensive. Getting every wheel oiled, track cleaned etc.

My Flying Yankee is an original! Is yours made of metal or plastic or both?
snickpickle 2 years ago
It's all metal. Pretty close to the original. Even the motor and reverse unit are old style, no can motor or reverse circuit board.
