Looks like this Hack has been shut down by YouTube within the last few hours (Feb 26, 2012)... major bummer! This technique no longer works.

Remember! For longer videos, were the editing process will take so much time that the thumbnail actually changes before you've made it public, use H20Oxice's tip:

To the left of your video, there is a check-box, check it > Go to Actions > And under privacy, click on "Public".

First of all, it does work if you do it right.

- All of my private testing videos have worked, incl. this one, right? ;)

- People have made rip-off tutorials after this, and they've made it work as well.

Here's some tips:

- Save time by making incredibly simple videos for testing. Make a low comp with only the colors black & white in low res. White being the thumbnail, and do the same thing.

- Read the description until you get it.

If you are actually asking that question, it's 40-50 percent of the total video length. You can go for a 20-30% thumbnail, but the chances of it actually hitting the third thumbnail suggestion is significally reduced.

GUYS I FIGURED IT OUT AND I'M ACTUALLY TRYING TO HELP YOU! When you're going to make your video public to private don't do it through the "Edit Video" option cause it forces your thumbnail to be part of the trim'ed version. What you do is Go to video manager, click the box to the left of your video and under uploads click on the box that says "Actions" and hit public and walaa it's now public and you won't lose your thumbnail. *Note EDIT ANY INFO FOR THE VIDEO BEFORE YOU TRIM!!!! VERY IMPORTANT!

the file had the right thumbnail after trimming as suggested initially, but it seems to have reset itself based on the selected length of the video instead of the original with the additional content. and reverted to other thumbnails. Video has been up for about 24+ hours.
