i really admire this setup. the branched live rock is genius. allows lots of water movement throughout, provides great sense of shelter for the fish but is pretty transparent for the viewer. also a really intelligent stocking level. great display!
my butterflies only nip at my corals, they dont devour them, people are full of BS, give it a shot with a cheap kenya tree coral or something, and test it out.
True ! Copperbands can be difficult . Butterfly Fish in general feed on SPS polyps in the ocean . The ones I listed above are the easiest to get feeding on prepared foods . Buttrfly's are not tank bred so they all come from the ocean .
hey SeaSlug415, I need some of your expert advice! I want to fill my 125 gallon tank with some butterfly fishes (probably 2-3), but I heard they're really hard to maintain and that they die easily. How long have you had yours for and what advice would you give? Thanks!
Like all marine fish, some Butterfy's are very hardy and easy to keep for many years and some should be left in the ocean no matter what . Best advice i can give you is to do your research before buying any , and add the 2 or 3 all at the same time ( providing your tank is mature and can handle the bio load ) . Here are a few that are easy to keep . Threadfin , Raccoon, Blackback, Lemon , Tinkers , Yellow Longnose ,Pyamid ,Bannerfish .
1. You buy a Juvenile (1.5 to 2 inches ) it can be trained to accept prepared foods easier .
2. Have an alternative plan to be able to move him to a larger tank with in 1 to 2 years . Pakistan Butterfly's will get 6.5 to 7 inches when fully grown and although 55 gallons is a minimum tank size there are other factors involved , bio load , how many other fish are in the tank and aquascaping ( how much room there is to swim in the tank .)
The C Bennetti's was sold months ago , and is stll doing well on prepared foods , this is very rare ! As " glassboxdesign " stated these fish do not do well in aquariums and are better left in the ocean . I think we got lucky with this one because it was so very small it didn't have years of a solid SPS diet .
oh wow that's good! well. when i grow up i wanna research rearing the larval stages of obligate corallivores in captivity so they have a good chance of feeding in aquariums. Then there'll be more of these guys in captivity without affecting the populations in the wild. they looks nice! thanks for replying
Your Welcome......although I would not recomend trying to keep a bennets butterfly fish . I got very very lucky to get him to eat and that is not the norm . That particular butterfly should be left in the ocean , 99% of the time they starve to death unless fed a strict diet of SPS Coral .
the bennet was feeding when I sold him , he was eating brine shrimp soaked in garlic . Don't know if he is still alive , he was sold a week after the video was shot .
Highly unlikely, unless added to an SPS reef system. Even when C.bennetti's are eating prepared foods it generally does not sustain them... beautiful fish though.
Nice!
