  • Great video, thanks! I do have a couple questions though. The highest vacuum reading that I can get is 15" and that is about 5-6 revolutions open from starting at all the way closed on both idle mixture screws, but when I do this it seems to run poor. If I take it down to 13" which is 4 revolutions open it runs a lot better. Why is it running better on 13" as opposed to 15" and secondly, does 4-6 revolutuions from open seem too rich, or would that seem reasonable?

  • i bought a 57 210 coupe that sat 10 years in the mud it has a 350 with a Q-jet. i got it running, turned down the fast idle, but when she gets a little warm (outside temp 40) & gets off the 1st notch (half) of choke it starts to make a mild backfire out the left side intermitently. If i push the choke armdown all the way she wont idle warm off choke. I havent touched the quads mixture screws yet. i watched your video, thanks. any other advise?

  • I'm pretty sure you want to be below the throttle plate when reading vacuum.

    watch?v=vh3Z-F6KGkI&feature=channel_video_title

  • how do i know what mixture is good. even if both cylinders run equal

  • Is better a vaccum guage or a Air/fuel ratio guage for tuning ??

  • @80v8camaro For idle mixture just use a vacuum gauge. Tune for the highest vacuum reading.

  • i have a question. when he was talking about getting the screws so its the fastest, so the more you screw it in. the more mpg, the more you unscrew the more horsepower??? is that correct?

  • @manlymud No. The idle mixture screws only control the mixture at idle, has nothing to do with mpg or power. What it means is turn the screw one direction or the other until the idle speed is the fastest. No set spot, just experiment. The engine slows down when you go too far either direction.

  • very helpful video, thankyou very much man!

  • hi wer can i get a mixture screw for my honda xr8x.i gues thats the problem as whe im riding and the bike get warm then cuts out??

  • But I do have one question: My choke doesn't seem to be setting when I start the truck. Is there something I have to do so the choke will set? I am sure the two of these are related, but also, the engine won't rev high when it's cold, and it kind of chugs for a minute or two until it starts to warm up. Any suggestions?

  • @apaulk86 check my choke videos, they'll be of help. It sounds like the choke spring is broken or out of adjustment.

  • AWESOME video. I am a bit of a young whipper snapper (25), and I bought an old K1500 with a quad on it and have been trying to tune it correctly. This was a huge help

  • How come I haven't found this video before?!

Very informative, but my Rochester Quadrajet doesn't react in the way you describe to adjusting the idle mixture screws. It runs perfectly when reved higher, but in idle it works very rough, occasionally stalls when hot. When I adjust the screws the idle just gets more rough. It produces loads of HCs when idling 2000-3000 (norm 50).

  • @MaxMatt2 .......sounds like your carb needs a rebuilt , floats need to be readjusted and a really good cleaning pressure air cleaning every hole , Q jets are a pain in the butt but stll good carbs when rebuilt right

  • @689321546 I guess I need to learn a lot and do it myself. I live in Europe and there's nobody around who knows a thing about such carbs. Which rebuild kit should I get? One of the YT videos recommends JET kit. I have found some others, but don't really know what they include. I am not sure if the choke works properly either. Even with the engine warmed up, it'll never drop the RPMs on its own - I have to rev it in order for the RPMs to drop. These videos are so much better than any shop manual!

  • @MaxMatt2 .......what year is the car is the (Q-jet ) off ??.....also you would need a master rebuild kit it has everything you need , the mixture screws on Q -jets like about three turn out from full sit ...frank

  • @689321546 It's a 1971 Cadillac Eldorado. I see many kits on ebay, but have no idea which one is good. I keep the car as a classic, so I want all the best for it. Is it worth it to upgrade to electric choke? Right now I am sorting out the ignition system and vacuum lines. Thanks for feedback!

  • @MaxMatt2 ...hi the Q-JET has a serial number thats how you would order the right rebuilt kit . as for the electric choke it would be a good idea , the choke thats on there now its a hot air pickup type thats has a tube connect to the manifold correct ! if you were not so far away i send you a motor manuel for your year car .i have rebuilted many Q-JETS in my day even the best of rebuild's the carb still run's bad it the way the carb was made .from day one . inline filters dont forget

  • Great video! Thanks for explaining everything. I have a Valiant Charger RT with 3 double 45 Webers. Engine just rebuilt and carbs redone but running rough and a bit rich I think. Is there a particular way I should attack the tuning?

  • Great Video lots of info.. quick question I have an fe 360 ford engine with 2bbl carb. I got the engine to start but every once and a while i have a fireball shoot out of the carb. Will the mixture screws fix this problem.. Iam assuming that the engine is burning to rich???

  • @escatel123 That's more commonly from a lean accelerator pump shot. That's probably an autolite carb, and you can replace the accel. pump leather easily. It's on the front of the carb, a small cover held on by 4 screws. You need to adjust the mixture anyway, that's just basic maintenance.

  • hi! I have an 87 Chrysler 5th Avenue with a Holley 6280 feedback carb. New gas tank and filter but tend to stall on start up and in drive as I slow down. Especially when the tranny is in drive or reverse. Once she is plenty hot (30 minutes or so) no problems (usually). Any suggestions??

  • @kisscatman I would look at the choke adjustment first. Thanks for watching.

  • Glad everyone has been helped by this video.

  • Wow - I killed my 403 Carb by over tightening that large filter screw! Glad EFI are the norm these days on all cars.

  • Well done! Very informative, to the point, professional, and did I say informative? Appreciate the input. Now I know how to tweak my 85 Chevy G10.

  • This is the most in-depth and informative video I could find, thank you! Now I can properly adjust my 4-barrel tomorrow morning.

  • Thank you good sir.

  • Here's maybe a strange carb question: how can you adjust them for best fuel economy and cleanest emissions ? I have a 1972 Volvo. The previous owner installed a Weber 32 / 36 but I think it's running rich. The car came from the factory with a Zenith Stromberg dual barrel carb which I still have. Any preference on which is better? Thanks for the easy-to-understand video.

  • I have a 68 nova str8 6 with a single barrel. Does the carb matter is its from an automatic? And when it warms up it sounds like its running on 2 cylinders... Or sounds like its highly cammed(whichever). Is that a carb adjustment? I recently replaced the carb with a carb from an automatic.

  • @ChubbyLoveDumpster It shouldn't matter. I would adjust the mixture first(there's only one screw because there's only one barrel) and try that. If it still lopes then check the choke. If neither of those resolves it then it probably needs a cleaning and overhaul.

  • Thanks for the great videos, I recently bought an 85 Chevy C10 and from your videos Ive got this truck drivable, Carbs adjusted and running great. Thanks again and keep up the good work your doing.

  • i have an 401 nailhead an it puts out a strong odor of gas and also cuts out at stop lights due to touching these two screws in the front lower. its 66 buick wildcat 445. can you help? please inbox me thanks

  • Very Good info!! Thanks Much!!

  • thanks helped adjust dirt bike

  • wert u neckkid?

  • Can you help me guys my car is Renault 19 1.7 CC motor F2N carburetor SOLEX 32/34 Z13

problems is : the RPM is not (( stable ) for example its start 800 RPM then after few minutes it become 700 then it back to 800 this make the Engine noise

my Question can tuning the idle mixture fix this problem

i have some photos for the same carb type

    h t t p i1224.photobucket. com/albums/ee363/windows700/solex/idelmixtue.jpg

    please advice

  • Good video. I was going to ask what a good starting point would be as well, but I saw you already posted about 2 1/2 turns out. So basically...I can turn the car off....tighten both sides up, then back them out 2 1/2 each, start it up and I should be close? thanks

  • @sak0013 Yes.

  • Hey, I got a 4 barrel rodchester quadrajet carb on my 1976 chevy truck sb 350. what ive recently discovered is after i have it running for about 4 minutes it dies cold turkey.. it also sounds like all the gas is robbed out of it. but, ive replaced the fuel pump and filter, i have a rebuilt carburetor on it and all new lines. when it's idling its runing strong and pure (i could balance a dime on it) then it suddenly runs rough and dies. any recommendations? thanks!!

  • Nice video. I have a solex single barrel 28bpi on a 1969 2cv. I have no idea how to optimize the carb any suggestions? TomV

  • @MrTomvalentino That's one I have never worked with. It sounds similar to units used on Volkswagen Beetles. You may find some info that way. Thanks for watching.

  • Thanks for the tip. Helped out alot. I just did it on my weber carb of my Toyota FJ40

  • you should do a video on epoxying the casting plugs for those that dont know how to. and porting and polishing the secondaries bores. to increase flow. adjusting float level. you can also bore out the main well to increase fuel amount. up the jets to .073 it will help with performance there is tons more you can do like drilling the idle circuits a little bigger i love the quadrajet its so versatile everybody runs a holley i think outside the box lol

  • Is there a good starting point on the adjustment screws? If someone attempted to change the mixure and screwed them all the way in there must be a good setting to begin with. Lets say, screw them in all the way then back them out 3 complete turns and go from there? Thanks. Ed.

  • @edpleasure Usually lightly seated and then 2-1/2 turns out is a good starting point that will get it running.

  • how u doin im trying to buy a used edelbrock for my 1978 chevy caprice give me a good price on one if u dont mind

  • A good way to cut some time off your video would be to not spend 5 sec telling us you are going to make it shorter.

  • @Pooshooter5k And the 15 seconds you spent typing that could have been much better spent doing something else.

  • @WhoSaidTyler Hey I didnt say I was in a hurry im goofing off on you to waist time. I was just saying if you are trying to make your video shorter thats the type of thing that you could edit out because the information contained in that segment was not what you were trying to convey. ya im givin you ahard time but its all fun. I do apreciat the vid though. Thanks for uploading.

  • @WhoSaidTyler hey tyler,im not perfectly clear on this....should you set the base idle first and then adj. a/f mix or vice versa ...i gotta a 67 camaro w/ man trans thats idling way high in neutral and running really rich...although when i drop it into first gear the idle drops alot...the car boggs cold but the choke seems to be opening up fine...any help greatly appreciated...thanks for the cool vid uploads

  • @mikeinsanediego well you want the idle to be close to normal before you begin so that you aren't running on the main circuit. So, the first thing is to back the base idle down to a normal range, then begin your mixture screw adjustments.

  • sounds like sean boswell from tokyo drift :]

  • I have a 1968 firebird that has a Quadrajet carb and Holley Street Avenger manifold. Until recently the car ran very well but I was frequently needing to adjust the mixture screws. Last weekend the car started back firing, shooting flames and raw fuel out f the carb and will not run. I put new plugs in it, cleaned out the carb and it's a little better but still not running right. I can get the car to run (not well) by unscrewing the mixture screws until they're about to fall out. Any sugest?

  • @danbirchjr My guess is that the float is sticking or the inlet needle has trash in it and is noy closing off the fuel supply completely. When you have the mixture screws that loose it is introducing air into the mixture and band-aiding the rich running. You'll need to pull the airhorn off so you can inspect the needle valve and the float. Good luck!

  • thanks man u helped my cougar pass emissions!

  • @thechefcaca Glad to help!

  • hows it going, do you know if you would tune a jetski carb the same way?

  • @KawiRider20 I haven't worked on a jet ski, but most carbs of any sort have mixture adjustment provisions.

They may have 2 screws, one for low speed mixture and one for high speed, esp if it's a 2-stroke.

  • Hi, nice video very helpful! I was wondering my chevy 350 4bbl, not everytime but stalls once I gear to Drive. When Im Parking its fine but as soon I switch to Drive or Reverse it idle and slowly stall. And if it runs normally at a stop light the engine idles like it about to stall again. Do i need to adjust the carb or is it something else?

  • Thanks yea its a camaro I was also wondering I heard that by lowering the float 1/16 can be the same having lower cfms saveing gas do u know anything about this is it a good idea or not

  • @89blackcamaro That's a myth.

  • I have a edelbrock 1406 where can I hook up a wire for the choke to work?

  • @89blackcamaro It has to be a source that delivers a full 12v that goes on and off with the key. I don't know if it's a camaro as your name says, but GM makes that easy because there are extra terminals provided on the fuse block. Look for one labeled IGN. Don't use BAT, those stay hot all the time. If it's another kind of car or truck you might take the 12v source off the power feed for the wiper motor. Be sure to ground the black wire if the choke has one.

  • ... drive before this. So i thought the auto choke probably isn't working. Was going to try and switch to manual choke. Question is 1)is there anything simpler i should try before i do this? 2) Also can you post a video to explain how to swap from auto to manual? do you just replace the choke spring unit and drill hole through firewall and run a cable through? Thanks again, legend!

  • @codhead2000 To begin with, I'm for repairing chokes first, because a properly working choke is very nice and does all the work for you. Concerning your Peugeot(no we sure didn't get those, we got a few 604's and 504/505's)..the steps are the same for ANY choke. It has to have a spring device to make it close, and a source of heat to make it open.

I would go through it thoroughly until you discover what isn't working.

  • Hi there, thanks for these videos, what a help, what a guy!

i'm from the UK, my car is playing up, didn't even know what a carburetor did until about 30mins ago, now feeling confident to go attack mine.

Now I have a question, i've got a peugeot 309, you probably don't have those over there but basically it won't idle until it's warm, could take a minute of revving in summer or 5 mins in winter when cold starting. Basically it's fine when up to temp, but cuts out before this if attempt to...

  • thanx a lot for this video it helped me out!

  • i gota jeep with a motocraft 2100 carb, i think. it bogs way down when you give it gas i dont know what it is, i think its the jets but i dont know. looking for some help

  • I am pretty new to messing with carbs. I bought a 79 jimmy with a stock 350 a few months ago and has pretty much ran like crap. Major bogg when under throttle. I watched this vid a few days ago and this morning went out to see how off the mixture was. On both mixture screws, either way I turned the screws the RPM never changed. What do you sugest. Thanks for the vids.

  • Thanks guy!

  • Do you adjust the main idle in-between adjusting the mixture screws, or wait until both are adjusted? Thanks!

  • @skyjac92 You can adjust the base idle after you finish adjusting the mixture screws.

  • Thanks all the basics covered simply.

  • my q jet has a weird head on the mix scews...damn emissions tampering proof carbs

  • @Texassince1836 You can still find the tool used to adjust those. It has a long flexible shaft and several different tips for various screw types.

  • Thanks, great Video! It seems pretty simple and just what I needed to know.

  • @michaele1981 Awesome!
