I think this channel is going to be one of the most popular channels on youtube soon because of how awesome their videos are and I am proud to say that I am a subscriber.
We agree with you, that the sound of the piano in this video is not the best sound this pinao could give. Before taking this video the Hammerheads had been "intoniert". For Martins feeling, intonation was to strong. One day before the piano sounds much better we think but all this is a wuestion of individual preference. We think Chopin was a great technical genius. And for this he prefered pianos which can make his fine differences to other composeres hear. For this he loved Pleyel and broadwood
Sebastian Erard was a great piano-bulider. His faible has been to do all mechanical work a piano has to to from steel. Pedal mechanic made of steel, Kayboard mechanic made of steel. So the sound was much bigger than the sound of a wood made piano. And the sound was more metallic. So he had to build bigger Hammerheads with with felt, while Pleyel buildt with leather. But then all people felt in love with the warm and big sound of Erard so the other parisien piano builder also took felt.
dear acortot, you're right. the sound of the restored Erard is much wrmer than the sound of the parisian Pleyel from Olivier. But the question is what kind of sound Chopin had prefered. We have a lot of letters seen between Chopin, Clara Schumann, Mendelsson and others who where not able to play Chopin while he was still alive. All of them (without Clara, she was the ons woh was able to play Chopin) tried to play in soft and romantic kind, with soft hammers and thick strings.
Actually the pleyel sound is much warmer and rounder, and the 'slightly metallic' quality that Liszt is talking about has more to do with the scale length and soundboard design than the hammers. Erards were considered a bit brighter although not this bright.
The owner of this piano has since restored the hammers and you can hear a more correct Pleyel sound on one of his videos
@flugelmaniac dear flügelmaniac, I allways hear you play on a modern piano. But Chopin authentically has to be done on a historical piano like this wounderful Pleyel. once Chopin said: better than one guitar sound two of them. He liked this silvery metallic clear sound very much. He don't like the more warm and diffuse sound of Erard and other pianos. The Pianino of Pleyel is one of the most genius constructions in piano building togehter with broadwoods upright called Cottage.Sabine

I don't think Chopin would have liked the treble tone of this Pleyel !............it sounds very harsh and metallic
