When a tangent universe is created, an artifact is sent into the universe (In this case, it's the jet engine). A tangent universe is only stable for 28 days, in which the Living reciever, (Donnie in this case, it's randomly chosen, but probably beacuse he was at the epicentre of where the artifact landed) must get the artifact out of the tangent universe. If they fail this, the world will end.

You missed out a lot of detail. Like at the start he wakes up in the middle of the woods. The movie is about Donnie being stuck in the period of 28 days and he woke up there because he failed to get the 28 days right. And he had to try again. And when he gets it right he laughs in his bed before his death. Because he knows it was meant to be.
Yea i thought the same thing about how Sparrow was waiting for the letter but doesnt know when its comming.... I think she saw the world was gunna end and told donnie that everyone dies alone which upsets him and causes him to create this friend (Frank).... Thats why he is able to cope with it. Then donnie writes the letter to sparrow and she knows her plan has worked... And then he is able to die alone

when drew barrymore asks donie why those kids burned the money in the book in the begining of the movie, donie sais because they wanted disorder in the world or whatever by burning the money and its ironic....... I think this movie after watching it three times (so im not completely sure im right) is a lot about causing mayham but the ironic part is, it shows the human flaws and wrongs kind of like the book. For example, when he burns down the pervs house, that guy gets caught abd arrested.

I know this is all "ancient history" and all that, but still- after watching the film 4 times I'd say that's a pretty decent attempt at figuring it out. You make some good observations of details that I'm sure were wasted on many who watched the film. Of course, as many have pointed out, there are flaws in your theory (which you openly admit) but without reading up on someone elses in depth interpretation (as it seems many of your critics have) that's not bad at all.
Because he burnt down the house kitty couldn't take them on the trip, so his mother had to. Maybe the idea of saving his mum would make him want to go back in time and die, knowing if he didn't she would die horribly. also, if h flood the school the teacher wouldn't have got in
When frank touches his eye "does he know he is about to get shot" No, this is after the primary universe is restored to what it was supposed to be (therefor nothing in the movie happens in this universe, since donnie dies, and there is no paradox created from the engine leaving the primary universe) and he doesn't get shot by donnie because donnie has already been crushed by the engine, as he was supposed to, after restoring the primary universe to it's destined state, from the tangent universe.

Theres a tangent universe when he wakes up = bad shit. there are 28 days (month of october) till it ends and with it will come the calapse of the primary universe (like present time) so between the time spand of the time he wakes up till the end of the tangent universe he has manipulated living and dead helping him.
@ChEmWen3 basically certain living people (the faces shown at the end of movie all in their beds - both physics and english teach and fat girl and health teacher) and manipulated dead (anyone that dies in the span of the 28 days and is closely related to the receiver (Donnie). In this case the manipulated dead is the bunny who he shot at the end at party. Thats why the bunny helps him/scares him in his dreams to know that this universe is not good.

i think i know where frank get's the inspiration for his costuum. On the citchen table at donnies house there stands a thing which is similar to the rabbithead. And because Frank is his sisters boyfriend so he also probably has seen this thing.
and donnie used his "telekinetic powers" to rip the engine of the plane and send it back through time to kill himself, to stop the parallel universe he was living in in the film from being created, because it was being destroyed anyways.... so basically he stopped the parallel universe from being created and destroyed because he killed himself so that he wouldnt kill frank, and so that gretchen and his mom and sister would live on and not die, like in the parallel universe... or something :P

frank told Donnie to burn down the house because this made kitty stay in Middle sex. which in turn made his mom have to leave to go with sparkle motion, this of course made it possible for them to have a party. Which Frank was invited to, frank then went on a beer run, killing gretchen, making donnie go to the point he always went to during the middle of the night. Thus being in the right place at the right time to put and end to the tangent universe

my opinion is that frank wanted revenge on donnie for killing him, so i think somehow real donnie saw the tangeant universe events in his dream. i think donnie (in tangeant universe) had some kind of unknown control on the tangent. so frank tells him to do things that start to ruin his life. donnie also believes the world will end, so it does, destroying the plain and sending the engine through time and killing his real self. so i think it was franks plot to mentally torture then kill donnie.

@liamelric frank meant that the universe was going to collapse and reset (the tangent universe basically a loop in time) when the jet failed to return to the primary universe (where donnie will die). it resets having donnie and the people who died in the previous tangent universe to do it again until franks trap (killing gretchen) worked and caused him to want gretchen to live by going back to the primary where he died and she never met him.

@MrJimmyTHEhat instead of being a smartass look up the definition of science fiction, this is speculative fiction. yes it has time holes, and that is an element of science fiction, but it isn't the defining characteristic of the movie, nor is it based on pre-existing technology
ok if you read the P.o.T.T. then you will see that it says there is no cycle. The existence of 2 engines in the tanget universe (where the movie takes place) will cause a black hole and swallow both the primary and tangent universe, ending all life in both universes. That is why Donnie has superpowers, so to say, that allow him to return the object back to the primary universe. He did not necessarily have to die, because in the primary universe that he dies in, he has no super powers. imo.
the reason why the chalk bored in the teacher's classroom read cellar door is that the breaking universe was giving donnie clues, all the people (especially frank). and what happens in that universe was to guide donnie (by the work of god) to lead donnie his destiny to save the world, by frank making donnie cause destruction frank shows donnie this will happen to his world and worse if he doesn't fufill his destiny
theres obviously a continuous loop. and some characters have a subconsious knowing and remembrance of the last time it looped. at the beginning donnie thinks of something and laughs, he obviously has some recollection to last time. so does the teacher, as she puts gretchen and donnie together, as well as writing cellar door.

well i've watched the movie several times and there is on part of the movie when donnie is talking to his psychiatrist about frank, and he says that frank was talking to him about time travel and that roberta sparrow (grandma death) had written a book about it. Donnie then states that it couldn't have been a coincidence, which made me think. What I think is that Frank was a guest at the halloween party (hence the bunny suit), and he left the party to get beer (hence the note on the fridge), and on his way back to the party, runs over Gretchen, and Donnie shoots him for revenge. Meanwhile, frank becomes the manipulated dead, and travels back to when the jet engine fell to create a tangent universe in which he saves Donnie. This would explain why when he takes off his mask in the movie theater, he already has the bullet wound.

Donnie is stuck in a time loop until he figures out how to break it, which he does at the end of this film. he was stuck in numerous loops before the film actually started.

I worked it out on the first watch donnie was supposed to die in a bike accident but managed to survive as such created a tangent universe very bad for the universe so a second tangent universe is created one which donnie must insure plays by doing things culminating in the murder of frank so that when that universe colapse it send the fragment and donnie back in time to collide and result in donnies death severing the prime universe and tangent which if left conected would result in destruction

It is not just a coincidence that fear and love are discussed in this movie. Donnie knew what he had to do to save the world, but was afraid of dying alone. There were two things that Frank asked Donnie to do. First one was to flood the school, second was to burn down Jim's house. The first deed caused him to meet Gretchen and the second led to his mother getting on that fateful plane. Towards the end, Donnie's love for Gretchen, as well as for his mother, led him to overcome his fear.
Donnie Darko is Groundhog Day but what we see in the film is the last run where everything goes to plan not all memories are carried back through the loop there lost like a "Dream"

when drew barrymore asks donie why those kids burned the money in the book in the begining of the movie, donie sais because they wanted disorder in the world or whatever by burning the money and its ironic....... I think this movie after watching it three times (so im not completely sure im right) is a lot about causing mayham but the ironic part is, it shows the human flaws and wrongs kind of like the book. For example, when he burns down the pervs house, that guy gets caught abd arrested.

I know this is all "ancient history" and all that, but still- after watching the film 4 times I'd say that's a pretty decent attempt at figuring it out. You make some good observations of details that I'm sure were wasted on many who watched the film. Of course, as many have pointed out, there are flaws in your theory (which you openly admit) but without reading up on someone elses in depth interpretation (as it seems many of your critics have) that's not bad at all.

When frank touches his eye "does he know he is about to get shot" No, this is after the primary universe is restored to what it was supposed to be (therefor nothing in the movie happens in this universe, since donnie dies, and there is no paradox created from the engine leaving the primary universe) and he doesn't get shot by donnie because donnie has already been crushed by the engine, as he was supposed to, after restoring the primary universe to it's destined state, from the tangent universe.

Theres a tangent universe when he wakes up = bad shit. there are 28 days (month of october) till it ends and with it will come the calapse of the primary universe (like present time) so between the time spand of the time he wakes up till the end of the tangent universe he has manipulated living and dead helping him.

In this case the manipulated dead is the bunny who he shot at the end at party. Thats why the bunny helps him/scares him in his dreams to know that this universe is not good.

my opinion is that frank wanted revenge on donnie for killing him, so i think somehow real donnie saw the tangeant universe events in his dream. i think donnie (in tangeant universe) had some kind of unknown control on the tangent. so frank tells him to do things that start to ruin his life. donnie also believes the world will end, so it does, destroying the plain and sending the engine through time and killing his real self. so i think it was franks plot to mentally torture then kill donnie.

@liamelric frank meant that the universe was going to collapse and reset (the tangent universe basically a loop in time) when the jet failed to return to the primary universe (where donnie will die). it resets having donnie and the people who died in the previous tangent universe to do it again until franks trap (killing gretchen) worked and caused him to want gretchen to live by going back to the primary where he died and she never met him.

this film is a mixture of time travel, self scarifice, religion, and the end of the world. you need to watch the directors cut and the extras.
its not about the end of the world being the whole world.. its about saving the lives of his family and friends. Frank is his sisters boyfriend who gets shot and is then sent back to save everyone by god.. this is why frank asks donnie if he believes in god etc.

ok if you read the P.o.T.T. then you will see that it says there is no cycle. The existence of 2 engines in the tanget universe (where the movie takes place) will cause a black hole and swallow both the primary and tangent universe, ending all life in both universes. That is why Donnie has superpowers, so to say, that allow him to return the object back to the primary universe. He did not necessarily have to die, because in the primary universe that he dies in, he has no super powers. imo.

Two parallel universes somehow come into contact. The primary universe is 28 days ahead of the tangent universe. The contact creates a portal which primary Donnie uses to cross over into the tangent universe. He then causes events which normally would have never occurred. Primary Donnie takes over tangent Donnie's will and vents his anger during the 28 day window. Frank manipulates evil Donnie into the reason that will lead him to change his mind about staying - the death of his girlfriend.

Donnie then states that it couldn't have been a coincidence, which made me think. What I think is that Frank was a guest at the halloween party (hence the bunny suit), and he left the party to get beer (hence the note on the fridge), and on his way back to the party, runs over Gretchen, and Donnie shoots him for revenge. Meanwhile, frank becomes the manipulated dead, and travels back to when the jet engine fell to create a tangent universe in which he saves Donnie. This would explain why when he takes off his mask in the movie theater, he already has the bullet wound.

Frank doesnt save Donnie, he helps guide him to fulfil his destiny so that the tangent universe doesnt destroy the original universe, where by the in the original universe gretchen and frank dont actually die.

@DreamFactory91 Frank doesn't go back in time to save Donnie, but to guide him to his destiny as the living dead (he now as donnie has also has super powers quote: i can do anything). If it were'nt for Bunny Frank, Donnie would not have met Gretchen (he talks to her after the school gets flooded. Then donnie decides to end the time loop, by destroying the tangent universe, so gretchen will live. And yes there is a groundhogs-day-like timeloop of 28 days, because donnie stabs frank in the eye

@DreamFactory91 actually, i think, frank came from a previous tangent universe (frank was the name of my father, and his father...) why else would he say that? Donnie is stuck in a time loop until he figures out how to break it, which he does at the end of this film. he was stuck in numerous loops before the film actually started.

i think people try to over analize things, just watch the movie if you like it you like it, dont try to beat a hidden meaning out of it, you'll miss the whole beauty and greatness in things, wheather it be books poems movies anything really. i think that if people just step back they would find alittle beauty in every thing they come across.

I worked it out on the first watch donnie was supposed to die in a bike accident but managed to survive as such created a tangent universe very bad for the universe so a second tangent universe is created one which donnie must insure plays by doing things culminating in the murder of frank so that when that universe colapse it send the fragment and donnie back in time to collide and result in donnies death severing the prime universe and tangent which if left conected would result in destruction

It is not just a coincidence that fear and love are discussed in this movie. Donnie knew what he had to do to save the world, but was afraid of dying alone. There were two things that Frank asked Donnie to do. First one was to flood the school, second was to burn down Jim's house. The first deed caused him to meet Gretchen and the second led to his mother getting on that fateful plane. Towards the end, Donnie's love for Gretchen, as well as for his mother, led him to overcome his fear.

Donnie Darko is Groundhog Day but what we see in the film is the last run where everything goes to plan not all memories are carried back through the loop there lost like a "Dream"
Donnie wakes up and he laughs.

I think he wanted to go back in time so that the girl he met and liked could live again. if he never met her in the first place she never would have gotten run over by the car. so its a story about true love.. letting the one you admire live in your place..

ok so basically anything that happened in the tangent universe was all for a reason. I think Frank made donnie burn Jim Cunningham's house and expose the kiddie porn in the tangent because that would have forced kitty (the bitchy health teacher) to go to his trial which would make Donnie's mom have to go with sparkle motion on a plane to their competition
