The character didn't risk everything, but only everything in her opinion. . She ought to have expanded laterally previously which is what minority groups do in general, to protect their know-to-self favourite passtimes. . The funniest thing on television since Bab's hit Pat in Eastenders. . Thanks for posting, . Cheers. from, del-boy.
this movie is so great because if not done well it could have easily been cheesy. but thedialogue and acting is superb. i could listne to judi dench's voice all day....
The thing I really appreciate in this movie is that the characters are so life like, and you can really feel everyone's perspective. Even, for example, when Barbara reveals the affair to the teacher who has a crush on her- that's some excellent filming- you can see his utter devastation and how the situation, even more so than it already is, becomes absoutely severe.
I agree J. Dench should have gotten the Oscar, her perfomance was so pasionate and the depth of the film had me wondering about Barbara and what caused her to become that manipulative or needy. Very good performance for Cate and Ms. Dench. She thinks no one is going to want her soon because of all the new actress"s and her age. Not in my book, she is still the tops.
Judi Dench was the Oscar winner. Mirren wasn't. Maybe Mirren 'triumphed' as she played the establishment and the judges like status quo - la la la, let's lick Queenie!, Dench's performance far surpasses.
Yeah, I agree. Dench handles this part in such a sophisticated, humane way. She seemed to downplay some of the homoerotic potential between the two principal characters and instead fully realizes Barbara as this damaged, manipulative, needy, sad person. I wouldn't want Barbara near me or my friends, but I can't help but care about her. There is so much moral ambiguity to this story. Which character is really decent at their core? Which viewer? (Dench is such a wise old owl).
one of the best movie I've seen lately! The acting was just amazing, they just deserved the oscar, Helen Mirren is good but you can't compare her interpretation with this! They are probably two of the best actresses around..e pity they didn't win..
they loved each other. i mean they got married after she came out of prison! i think judi dench's character is worster, as she really mean to hurt. i know it's not..correct to "seduce" a 15 years old, but she didn't mean tio hurt anybody. and that old bitch was obsessed with her, she was just jealous becaus eshe didn't wanted her..she is horrible
These two are geniuses! Doesn't need to be said, but couldn't help it. Really, honestly, words will never do either of them justice...they come as close to super-human when conveying authenticity and emotion is at stake. They are pure, raw, stripped down emotion and intelligence. What brilliant character choices. AAH, just too too good! Judi and Cate, absolute heros!!
The movie is hardly campy...Patrick Marber is an excellent choice to adapt this screenplay...the the 21st Century's answer to Edward Albee, Gore Vidal and John Guare. I hope he gets the Oscar...he should have for Closer. Phillip Glass deserves a statue too...just a great all around movie.
Oh don't misunderstand, I believe it's an excellent film. I just think it tends to tiptoe across the dividing line between great thriller/drama and great camp. You can't have that many actors in a melodrama resorting to histronics and not entertain the notion that it's simply rich camp. Whatever it is, it's good. Damn good.
oh come on, judi dench knows how to act to the fullest without going miles into melodrama territory, unlike dunaway who gave possibly the most over the top performance of all time in "mommie dearest".
Just saw the film a couple of days ago; despite a strong initial half hour, the whole thing is really quite appalling (see everything that follows.) But Judi Dench is just as good as this clip indicates - one of the best performances of the year undoubtedly.
I love Cate, but Dench made her look like a first-year student in this scene. Wow.

They didn't love each other. Barbara (Judi) loved Sheba (Cate), but Sheba (Cate) didn't. She just liked her as a friend.
