  • Air Theremin, that's what it is!

  • giving a ghost a handjob haha

  • haha how fake

  • Sounds too good to be true. Are you not just Air Theraminning ?

  • That instrument is so amazing!

  • I heard the complete version of this song on theremin at the Teknisk Museum, in Oslo, for which I am truly grateful. Really truly

  • if you play left 4 dead 2 then this should sound like dark carnivle

  • you're being too modest, that was actually quite good!

  • Well done! What an incredible difficult but cool instrument

  • does anyone happen to have the recent episode that rik was in of this show? could you please share it here? thanks.

  • hahaha

  • what kind of instument is that?

  • Sounds too angry... It's supposed to be smoother...

  • This is so awesome but that hand movement is freaking me out, it looks kinda scary. XDD

  • Hey, how do you get that sound on the theremin?

I have been trying for a while on my eatherwave.

But my sound a bit diffrent.

  • That's not an etherwave. It looks like a Kees Enkelaar theremin to me (no longer in production) - I have a Kees and an etherwave, and you're not going to get that sound out of an etherwave - the moog's waveform is asymmetric, so it's always going to sound a bit brassy - the kees's waveform is almost a pure sine wave - a slightly unstable one - there are no harmonics (*), but the fundamental shows up on an audio spectrum as a little triangle rather than a thin line.

    HTH

  • My post just now was in reply to Skjutentrast. As usual youtube is being a bit arbitrary about comment threading.

  • Cheers. I figured as much.

I got a more smooth sound by playing the etherwave through a long reverb.

  • sounds like the original 5/5

  • Brilliant playing, excellent work!

  • very good job ol chap. Well done

  • I would invite you to "murder" some other theme songs - your version is on my

    "Protectors" playlist. Also, your cover

is the ONLY version, indistinguishable from the original, that isavailable on 'You Tube' or anywhere so a huge thank you from over here!

  • What do you mean, your playing is pretty dire? Sounds great to me! ;-)

  • sounds amazing!

  • LOVE THIS SONG!!!AND THE SEREIS

  • This was wonderfully played! Full marks to you, and a five-star rating.

  • :O! 5/5

  • How does this instrument work, And how do you play it?

  • his left hand controls the volume of the sound, close to the antenna = no sound, and far from = lots of sound :p

and his right hand controls the pitch of the sound :) close = higher pitch :p

  • I promise, in the beginning, i thought WGM or some other fishy corporation had replaced the soundclip.

    Well done.

  • You did not murder this ! Its superb !!

  • this thing is very interesting, i heard this song when i was waching Midsomer Murders on TV. Then i searched it out on Youtube and i found this! how does this thing works??

  • I've never seen anything like that! What is it?

  • a theremin

  • I want a Moog so badly =(

But I live in Belgium, and I don't know anyone that sells theremins...

  • @ximulady you could always just buy it off the internet or something?

  • Perfect! This composition is not creepy, it is a master peace!

  • Yeah, probably the creepiest thing ever.

  • This is probably one of the creepiest themes ever made for TV.

Imagine if you were walking in the woods at night and listening to this on your iPod etc...

  • Great!

  • Good job.

  • Well done!

  • You played very well!

  • Very well done, my compliments

  • awesome song!! I love the show too! Did you know Anthony Horowitz produced the show, he made the script for the first episode and also for 4 more episodes as well.

  • Idiot. It takes extreme musicality to be able to play these things. and i can't see the connection between being musically skilled and a homosexuall.

  • @ogge581 HAh!

  • rofl i want one of those

  • there is a really long one of the midsomer murders theme i want to know what it is i think its called midsomer nights dream im not sure lol

  • Sounds great, keep up the good work.

    5/5

  • AGH I JUST WATCHED THIS!! literally two minutes ago. i looked at the special features, they were like this is the instrument they used. and now i find it here. great show btw

  • Very good job, sound very authentic!

  • thats well cool. by the way what is the specific type of theremin that you have and where did you get it from? i've been looking into buying one and i want to make sure that it is good quality.

  • Buy a Moog, they're good.

  • You're great!

  • i love this music can i get it as a ringtone

  • You have a unique style which seems to be working for you. Mazel tov.

  • =o that is absolutly brilliant! Gobsmaked with sheer amazement i tell ay! 10/10 xD

  • Fantastic!! That's such a great TV theme tune ... I really want to learn the full piece sometime. Your playing is nicely in tune too. If this is your first attempt at theremin-playing then you certainly have potential. Keep at it! I'll look forward to more in future.

  • I agree with BlueCougar. Not bad. Is that a Kees Ankelaar theremin?

  • Hi Thomas. Yes - it is.

  • Not as bad as you claim, actually. Have heard worse from self-appointed "pros" here on Youtube. As a fact, I was first wondering if you weren't just playing "air theremin" to the original recording with Celia Sheen. If you are really a beginner, you are quite good.

You should check your technique, though. You get finer intonation by turning your hand palm facing away from the antenna aund using your fingers - watch a thereminist you really like (with good intonation) and how (s)he does it...

  • Thanks, BlueCougar. I have been looking at a few videos of Clara Rockmore playing, but haven't quite figured out what my fingers are supposed to be doing yet! My intonation was much worse when I tried to mimic her, so I'm clearly doing something wrong...

  • If you are interested in the theory behind the Rockmore style, you can find her "Method for Theremin" as a PDF file via Google. Also, for intonation, have a look at "Lydia Kavina plays Clair de Lune" here on UTube, which is a different playing style. You can watch the difference of finger, hand, and arm movements quite well on that one.

It's similar to playing a violin or guitar: you use different finger positions for the notes and change hand/arm position for larger leaps.

  • Of course, as on a violin, you could slide around with one finger all the time, but there are limitations to that method... ;-)

As with any other instrument, it takes time; there is no "instant gratification" on the theremin...
