Wouldn't it be better to cut the square in half, model half the head then when you're done, duplicate, mirror the face and join the vertices to create a whole symmetrical face? IMO, it's half the work saved.
@megasean3000 That's kind of what I am doing (though it doesn't look like it). I'm just modelling one side of the face, with the other side being an instance that's been mirrored. If you take a look, the move tool is just moving on one side of the face, but verts on both sides of the face move. I use a mirrored instance so that I get the proportions as accurate as I can.
@megasean3000 select the model you want to mirror. Go to Edit> Duplicate Special> Options Box. In the options click Geometry Type "Instance". Click "Apply". Then scale -1 in either X or Z depending on which way your model is facing.
Yes, I think you're right. I 'm sorry I haven't provided this before. This tutorial actually came about because I was doing a work test for a job as a character artist. I wanted to show my work flow and prove that I'd worked from scratch. I'm going to make some more tutorials focusing on certain areas and techniques and I'll be adding a voice over.
I think that the technique you're using is fast ,efficient and topologically speaking correct...that would be great if you could make also a narrated version of this time lapse...once again, excellent, thank you for sharing
@wge0esber0 yes it is mirror modelling through instancing the model then scaling it -1 in X (or Z depending on which axis will mirror the model). Sorry this reply is so late.
@Izr0d Thanks. There are more efficient methods I guess, but I was in a bit of a hurry as it was part of a job application. I polished it some more and fixed some of the proportions, which you can see here on my blog
how did you do the thing were you check to see what it looks like when its smoothed out and make it go back to the unsmooth form again?

@totopoo123 If you press "1" "2" or "3" with the mesh selected it will do "smooth proxy mode" and smooth the whole mesh.

@beatnik3d I see. So you pick a vertex and it picks a vertex on the other side? If so, how would you do this?
