I love this video and all of Rankin's music. Walker Valley & the Truckee River are special places to me when I lived out West & I'm sad I can't find Kenny's "Darcy Farrow"....anywhere...till this day! I liked Ian & Sylvia's and John Denver's renditions but Kenny Rankin's, got me to my "ballad bones".
I had the good fortune to see 4 of his performances in one year back in the 70's in Los Angeles. His 'Kenny Rankin' album arrainged by Don Costa is the perfectly beautiful blend of his soothingly serene voice and majestic treatment of both his own writings and cover tunes...I hope I get to hear him again live in Heaven. A great loss in my mind and in my musical heart.
Yes, a musician's, musician. In the 70's he did a lot of this kind of music, my favorite is "Like a Seed". Wish someone would post it here. I still have the album. But he also went on to play a lot of jazz with Stan Getz and others. Also played the Beatles "Blackbird" at their iduction to hall of fame.
Thank you so much for posting this video. I had it on an album years ago and haven't heard it since 1971. It was great to hear again. Kenny was from the Bronx. My brother Eddie knew him.
Kenny was also tonight show favorite in the Carson days. Johnny once said that the band would get excited when he was scheduled to appear. He's a musician's musician.
Kenny Rankin has one of the most pure, beautiful voices in history. George Harrison always said Kenny's version of WHILE MY GUITAR GENTLY WEEPS was his favorite cover.
Reminds me of when he was a regular at the Golden Bear in California. Ice House in Pasadena also guested his song. Johnny Carson had him on frequently.
Some of my first musical memories is my folks playing Kenny Rankin's "Blackbird" and "People Get Ready". Like this and Kenny's other music, it is just timeless. Please post more!
absolutely love this old song, thanks for putting it here. Kenny Rankin still tours, at least he did a few years ago. His was one of the last concerts I took my mom to before her death in 2001. She adored his music in the '60s and '70s and we had no idea he was still out touring, 'til he came to Hopkins, MN for a concert. My mom was ecstatic. He was very charismatic on stage and it was a great show.
Beautiful. Thanks for putting this video up. I have loved Kenny since 1969 when I first heard "Peaceful" blasting from my brothers VW. I bought the album but it is long lost. I forgot about this song (which was on the album). Great footage.
He is wondering if "god" understands how hard it is for Kenny with all the violence and the searching for appropriate metaphors He (Kenny) has to go through. When Kenny sings about "sweet saturdays child" he is refering to his brief foray into Seventh Day Adventism. The "dolphin" is the religious assurance that Kenny desperately seeks. Ironically, Kenny was never answered by god because he repeatedly refered to god as "babe".
I see the "dolphin" as representing a significan "change" for Kenny. He seems to be calling for this at the beginning of the song. He mentions war, perhaps this change means peace for Kenny. When he says "do you ever think a little bit about me?" he is speaking directly to "god" or "allah" or whatever word Kenny might use to describe our creator.
While I think musically this is top shelf stuff, I feel that he is perpetuating alot of dolphin myth. They're not the 100% fanciful creatures that TV and picture books would have you believe. There is a dark side to dolphins which this guy ignores.
Thank you so much for posting this rare performance!!! I saw Kenny R. many many times and he always put on a fantastic show.

It's music like this, that makes you stop and realize how beautiful life is, and how great it is to just be alive.
Thanks for posting this gem.

So many roads lead back to Fred Neil. Like Bob Dylan, Fred Neil took Kenny under his wing. Silver Morning album is my favorite. miss you Kenny.

The sad thing is that a dolphin will never hear this song because they hear in a totally different register than us.
bitobaco 5 years ago
does the dolphin symbolize a pretty lady?
bitobaco 5 years ago
if it does, she's probably bi, as dolphins just go for it when they're randy.

they also have a pink side, i.e.- the pink freshwater dolphins of the Amazon which aren't addressed at all in this number

Now you're just being silly.

this would be way better if there were animations of dolphins in it.
