The most well-known Afghan mujahid was Ahmed Shah Massoud who was pro-western, and fought Taliban. He was assassinated by Al-Qaeda two days before 9\11.

It's true that the U.S. did little to intervene in Afghanistan after funding the Mujahideen. But, it is very misleading to say that the Mujahideen were all religious fanatics, since many former mujahideen fought against the Taliban in the 90s, and are fighting on our side today against them.

Yeah... that didn't happen. You might've heard that the CIA funded the Mujahideen in Afghanistan, who were mostly Afghans, and supplied them with weapons. To say the U.S. trained al-Qaeda would be simply untrue.
