I've been actually learning the blues lately instead of just faking it with some boogie woogie and everyone's failed to point out that hopkins uses his thumb and index almost exclusively to play his lines. Awsome blues giant, Lightnin Hopkins. He is my favorite and I love going down slow by him. I am 72 yrs. old and he has been my favorite blues man for 60 yrs. We all miss him and god is loving him forever.
lightning played mostly in crossnote (the devils tuning )open minor For E ebegbe, but here it appears to be in natural tuning perhaps slacked some. his cousin albert collins played the same tuning but up in pitch to fsharp.then capoed.
Looks (and certainly sounds) like the guitar is a mahogany body. Cool slotted headstock too :) Hopkins wasn't only a great player, but had good taste in guitars!
Lightnin' takes it all home. "Don't see how a man would want to live like that" he said, brown bag of beer, watching the traffic jam in Texas one hot day. Lightnin' summed it up.
@GwarMaggot I played guitar for the metal blade label and wrote songs for rihanna. its not that great difference. Metal must come back down. Modern metal is the same than this pop shit. simple powerchords with triggered drums and studio editing till death.. same as pop shit. you dont play fast powerchords but you play more complex harmonys in pop (metal no chords.. powerchords are just and intervall..the I and V!! harmony = zero). @leftyrock85 Check also the whole Chicago scene. Elmore james, Luther Allison, Magic Sam, Muddy water, Howlin' Wolf and also MIke Bloomfield. Getting messed up on drugs is no way to play music. To get on their wave length takes a simple way of life in a complex hectic world. He was a normal happy guy who couldn't be that so he sang about it and what bothered him. He didn't need to have a needle in his arm to sing you the blues, he just gave you a taste of what you know is in that needle. The Blues.
@onelovega hahaha i think the blues is a lil something more than that bro, you seen the vid with lightnin and that dude thats all over the floor cryin crazy? thats the blues if i ever seen it.
to group guys like lightnin', big joe, or robert johnson in the same breath as those "rock" wannabes, is a joke.
in no way did any of the guys from the rock generation connect scales all the way up like those old blues cats. so to say rock "pushed it further" is an insult to the guys who could actually play, instead of faking the scales within a single octave on some diva shit. these guys didn't need electrification, they were too pure.
To txlastrebel and taildragger51: I think you two are being a bit unfair to Clapton, and by the way he's not 'Sir' Eric, yet, and hope he never fucking well is! Clapton has always paid homage to the blues greats like Hopkins, Broonzy and Robert Johnson and was part of the movement which got these musicians some long overdue recognition in thier own country for fuck's sake. Like Jagger he was a young man in complete awe of the blues, he and Hendrix et al just pushed it a bit further and louder.
everyone is entitled to preach the blues because everyone gets the blues. Hopkins is a master and expresses his blues... but dont think the blues is only for blacks? no matter who you are the blues follows you.
Seeing Lightin' (Sam) Hopkins play live and up close was a great moment for me. He came over to the bar and told me to stick around 'cause he'd be right back. Guess he saw me mouthing the words to the songs. I knew them pretty well. What a legend! Check out the Les Blank film "The Blues According to Lightning Hopkins" a real gem. It's on youtube in segments.
no music style can make you feel this pain and this suffering as the blues does. and lightning hopkins was one of the greatest artists. one tune and you're just in his feeling, in his mood in his pain. just amazing
2menace: True. The Blues is erotic, painful, healing, sensual, hypnotic & spiritual all at the same time. For me, it's the ONLY form of sincere musical expression there is. That voice of Lightnin's can never be duplicated.
Clapton is not the blues? You have got to be kidding me. Lightning', Muddy Waters, Howlin' Wolf, etc are all great- that I don't dispute. Honestly though, Clapton is probably one of the three greatest guitarists of all time, and the genre that influenced him/ he played the most was blues.
Well, you have your opinion. Every magazine/website/tv-show to ever count down the 100/50/25/10 greatest guitarists ALWAYS, ALWAYS, ALWAYS has eric clapton near the top. Very near, usually 1 or 2. I'm sorry, old time blues might be great, but come nowhere close to the sheer technical skill Clapton has. Just because he's not some "authentic black bluesman" doesn't mean you have to knock him/ flat out disregard his blatant greatness.
@ubernerd35 I don't care what magazine/website say. IMO he is not great. Nor is he a guitar god. Far from it. I can name tons of guitars players that I consider way better than him.
@txlastrebel Now he's not even great? I am sorry. You are 100 percent, objectively wrong. I decline to comment further on the matter seeing as you probably haven't listened to any music produced past 1960.
TX, last rebel. Hmm. That could explain your strange views. Clapton is a no good dirty brit, after all.
Sorry, I lied. This is my last comment. I went to your profile and you have "liked" numerous Bo Burnham songs. Really? Bo Burnham is good but Eric Clapton is a hack?
Do you see the inherent hypocrisy there? Also, Clapton can play everything Lightnin' can play, and then some (a lot more technical aspects).
@RastafariPoet I'm not disrespecting ANYONE'S blues. The old timers were great (which I have said several times), but saying Clapton isn't good is sheer lunacy.
@ubernerd35 Eric clapton is terrible , not only did he rip albert kings style ( and in the case of the strange brew solo , he ripped albert note for note) but the man just has no soul or touch. i mean next thing you are going to tell us is Yigve mamlsteem is one of the greatest ever. just cause someone has some chops don't mean shit. the music is what counts. oh and the layla intro is also a big albert king rip off. course you probably don't know any of this. Do some research
Wow blues is blues. I would think the Blues havened the people who can respect all peoples blues. Clapton kicked ass. Definitely not the best but he kicked ass. Blues-Rock.
@txlastrebel Well, as much as you fundamentally support the old school blues greats. You have to appreciate Clapton's work, he propagates blues to the wider audience, thanks to him more people are interested in blues. So what he did is important. He's a good guitarist too, and he can make good covers.
Come on, no need to put down someone to build someone up.....Clapton has complete respect for his elder bluesmen...that's what its about.....it's not a competition, the blues guys respect each others abilities
@txlastrebel We LOVE Eric Clapton just as much as all the boys....It ain't he good, he not....that's duality brother...taking us away from the ONENESS of all this GOOD STUFF WE ARE SO BLESSED & LOVE SO MUCH & LUCKY TO HEAR ALL THESE PEOPLE WE LOVE.....GOD BLESS you all brothers....WE LOVE YOU!!!!

TEXAS BLUES!

Only a black dude can sing this tune... it just doesn't sound right when when a white guy sings it. Hey, I'm a white guy. It's just not as good.
jwahh 2 years ago 4
everyone is entitled to preach the blues because everyone gets the blues. Hopkins is a master and expresses his blues... but dont think the blues is only for blacks? no matter who you are the blues follows you.

what a f'n legend.. man was a master on that guitar.

That voice of Lightnin's can never be duplicated.
taildragger51 2 years ago
clapton is not the blues. He can't hold a candle to these old dudes. This is the real thing.
txlastrebel 2 years ago 74
txlastrebel: You're right. Sir Eric's really a pop star like Sir Mick Jagger. This is REAL. Hopkins lived the life.
taildragger51 2 years ago 4
@txlastrebel you have to say though, Clapton is amazing at what he does.

@txlastrebel He just whites this music up and treats his fans like dirt. His Robert Johnson tribute makes me want to puke.

That is of course a matter of opinion.

Clapton is not the blues? You have got to be kidding me. Lightning', Muddy Waters, Howlin' Wolf, etc are all great- that I don't dispute. Honestly though, Clapton is probably one of the three greatest guitarists of all time, and the genre that influenced him/ he played the most was blues.
ubernerd35 1 year ago
@ubernerd35 not even close IMO. He's not in my top 25.
txlastrebel 1 year ago
@txlastrebel
Just because he's not some "authentic black bluesman" doesn't mean you have to knock him/ flat out disregard his blatant greatness.
ubernerd35 1 year ago
@ubernerd35 I don't care what magazine/website say. IMO he is not great. Nor is he a guitar god. Far from it. I can name tons of guitars players that I consider way better than him.
txlastrebel 1 year ago
@txlastrebel Now he's not even great? I am sorry. You are 100 percent, objectively wrong. I decline to comment further on the matter seeing as you probably haven't listened to any music produced past 1960.
TX, last rebel. Hmm. That could explain your strange views. Clapton is a no good dirty brit, after all.
ubernerd35 1 year ago
@ubernerd35
Sorry, I lied. This is my last comment. I went to your profile and you have "liked" numerous Bo Burnham songs. Really? Bo Burnham is good but Eric Clapton is a hack?
Do you see the inherent hypocrisy there? Also, Clapton can play everything Lightnin' can play, and then some (a lot more technical aspects).
ubernerd35 1 year ago
it's not about the technicality...
but thats all i have to say, i have as much respect for clapton as the next person..
but the blues were meant to be sang by a black man (or woman)

If you can disrespect someone elses blues, let alone music such as you do. You don't need to listen to no blues.
RastafariPoet 1 year ago
@RastafariPoet I'm not disrespecting ANYONE'S blues. The old timers were great (which I have said several times), but saying Clapton isn't good is sheer lunacy.

@ubernerd35
I was referring to the people who were. Sorry shouldve been more clear.
RastafariPoet 1 year ago
@ubernerd35 Strange blues because I don't thing he's great. I'm not the only one.
txlastrebel 1 year ago

Blues-Rock.

The blues isn't a comparison, it's an appreciation
The blues players don't point fingers and say who is better, they all respect and apprectiate each others participationof the blues.
Lightin is awesome, and so is Clapton
CletusColtrane 1 year ago
@txlastrebel Well, as much as you fundamentally support the old school blues greats. You have to appreciate Clapton's work, he propagates blues to the wider audience, thanks to him more people are interested in blues. So what he did is important. He's a good guitarist too, and he can make good covers.
RankAndFileGuy 1 year ago
@txlastrebel eric had the talent to be a real bluesman but not the internal feelings necessary. he was too motivated by trends and fashions.

@putdownan8dude you have to admitte claptin can shredd the blues....he might not have the pasion but he sure does have the fingers
rapeandpilage138 1 year ago
@txlastrebel
Come on, no need to put down someone to build someone up.....Clapton has complete respect for his elder bluesmen...that's what its about.....it's not a competition, the blues guys respect each others abilities
