It's ironically the twisted corrupt tax code and government that alows these companys to get away with it. Vote for anyone but obama, and they will try to shrink the gov't. And that, IMO is what we really need. A "Level" playing field is not achieved through gov benefits.

They also tried to lower risk by purchasing derivatives created by private investment banks. Fannie and Freddie actually had higher lending standards than private banks becuase of their GSE status. Blaming everything on government is very simplistic and idealogue-ish

I lot of people made mistakes,both public and private..you can't pinpoint the specific cause or policy origins. I think Fannie and Freddie have been around since the late '30's and real estate has been a solid place for money until late 2006. Speculation lead to artificial value, adding incentive to relax standards.People lost net worth......
