It's odd to me that Jones Jr. dominated Sheika to the point that he got his first stoppage win in a little over six years, but then Jones has produced nothing great since, other than beating a totally shot Lacy (who also has done nothing since), but Sheika went on to give Diaconu a very tough fight. I know Diaconu is nothing special in comparison to elite fighters, but he is a very solid fighter who should have easily beaten someone who got embarrassed by a 40 year old Jones Jr.

The referee stoppped it at the right time. Sheika wasnt throwing back or attempting to clinch. Thats what theyre taught, when a boxer doesnt fight and is taking a beating they need to stop the fight.
Premature stoppage. Sheika was not even slightly hurt. The correct course of action would have been to warn him to throw more punches, warn him again, then if he was still doing nothing but catch Jones' hooks, THEN stop the fight.

@roddiero Shieka was gettin pounded. That wasn't the only round that went that way. And MMA is much different, boxers accumulate more shots to the head. Most MMA fighters would knock their opponent out if the connected a three punch combo. But I agree MMA is a much better sport to watch, boxing is bullshit today...

ok, maybe jones was too fast for sheika, but there are boxers who don't accept to take a single punch from opponent, avoidin everytime and movin all around, like jones, and boxers who come out on distance, maybe takin some punch. referee should have given sheika the opportunity of doin more. they are boxers, the take punches, it's their job.

The referee stoppped it at the right time. Sheika wasnt throwing back or attempting to clinch. Thats what theyre taught, when a boxer doesnt fight and is taking a beating they need to stop the fight.

Premature stoppage. Sheika was not even slightly hurt. The correct course of action would have been to warn him to throw more punches, warn him again, then if he was still doing nothing but catch Jones' hooks, THEN stop the fight.
When you look at how little effect Jones' punches were having, the idea that this goes into the books as a KO is ridiculous.

@garethac81 the gash in question wasn't the only reason the fight was stopped. if you remember the gatti vs floyd maywether jr. fight arturo wasn't cut just a little swolen but, like this fight you see that he wasn't mounting any attack and he was just recieving punishement the cut/gash was simply more convincing proof that the ref was right to stop the fight. i don't see any evidence that shieka would have improved his situation but, evidence to the contrary is obvious.

His legs were steady, he hadn't been staggered, he was never close to going down, and he was showing no signs of distress whatsoever. Jones was potshotting him with punches that were gradually marking him up, but not powerful enough to put in trouble, let alone knock him out. Sheika was badly outclassed, but he was shaking off Jones' punches with ease.

Sorry, but by the strictly defined rules of boxing, it WASN'T "a good stoppage". Just like a referee is obliged to wait for a lull in the action before calling a time-out, he is obliged to wait until a fighter is in distress before calling the fight off. Sheika was showing no signs of distress whatsoever...and his face was not marked anywhere near as badly as you're trying to claim. This was a TEXTBOOK bad stoppage.

Sheika still had his balance, still had his legs, and still had his gloves up. There's a big difference between catching a high percentage of punches and being UNABLE to defend yourself. If Jones was snapping Sheika's head back, or buckling his knees, it would have been a different story...but his punches had nothing like that kind of impact.
I'm not going to argument anymore about it.

@garethac81 p.s. high percentage of punches?? well 100% of jone's punches were landing everytime he would throw and 0% of omar's punches were landing when he would throw. after FIVE ROUNDS no one can say the ref didn't do his job. when sugar ray leonard{one of the commentators} says its a good stop then its safe to asume its a good stop.

@garethac81 something you have to understand about boxing, when a fighter can land power shots without seting them up with jabs, that means that the fighter recieving the hits is not able to safely defend themselves. p.s. the more i watch this clip the more convinced i am that it was a good stoppage. i take back what i posted earlier about waiting to the end of the round to stop the fight, it was stopped at the perfect time.
