Not sure how Corman got Horner to do it... but he wrote this excellent scifi theme song for him... as well as the theme to his STARCRASH... which is also excellent
A movie that was so bad it was awesome with an absolutely kick ass soundtrack (just like Flash Gordon). Love this. And +1 for the spaceship with tits!
One of the greatest film opening soundtracks! If there is a remake, they should incorporate as much of the original score as possible! If only at the opening credits!
love James Horner. This is a blast from the past for me. There was one other movie that was like this. It had the same ship and and it was piloted by a bunch of pirates and I remember a kid stowed away on the ship...I just cant remember the name of the movie.
@fluffdegoss Omigosh, i had totally forgotten about SPACE RAIDERS. For some reason i caught that one a couple of times on Channel 20, DETROIT during the Summer months of my youth. They used to play a 9 am movie, if i recall correctly. SPACE RAIDERS was one they showed a couple of times. I enjoyed it simply because i loved the reused BATTLE BEYOND THE STARS footage :P
BBTS is to released July 12th on both Blue Ray and DVD. I've always liked this film. I saw it the summer of 1980 at the drive-in along with the special edition of Close Encounters. I'm glad that BBTS is now a cult classic. The theme song is a classic as well.
I grew up watching "Battle Beyond the Stars" over and over. I thank my dad for that one. He was on the cutting edge of B-Movies and recording them for me at his work.
I think my first exposure to Horner was Battle Beyond the Stars. I watched that movie SOOOOO many times on HBO. EVERY time I knew it was coming on, I HAD to be there for the beginning. This was very likely the first time I became addicted to music. The score to this movie, the intro in particular, still excites me and makes me all giddy.
This score and the complete Star Trek II score are the reason why resp. Battle beyond the Stars and The wrath of Khan are enjoyable to watch....James Horner (still) is one of the best...
@Nik123dj In fact, he should have done the theme music to every other Star Trek film after Star Trek 2 and 3. Apart from Jerry Goldsmith, the other composers, who did Star Trek 4 and 6 just didn't do it for me.
i agree it looks better than cgi more real shal lwe say when u had to it but i aint knocking cgi in certain films but if you do it without cgi you should
agh i love james horner!! he composed a lot of scores of my childhood movies (land before time, titanic) etc. makes me cry every time. havent heard this score before, its pretty good
Most Horner fans are familiar with his "borrowing" music from other pieces. Fine with me, as long as it sounds good. Among others, the section at 3:45 sounds very similar to Star Trek 2. I don't see as much similarity to Krull.
Umm, Jame Horner scored those, that's why it sounds familiar, can't really steal from yourself. He based his ST score off of this....in parts anyways..
I remember when my friend gasped at the gorgeous romantic string segment that comes from nowhere. It's a great preview of what was to come, like Krull, and Star Trek II which echo through it across time. I enjoyed James Horner's music for Humanoids from the Deep so much, I still have the album! -The Roger Corman days before the Oscar for Titanic, and the music for Braveheart.
Seems like the only place you can find good, theme-driven orchestral writing nowadays is at the movies. This guy contributed so much to the soundscape of my childhood. Every score a masterpiece. What's your favourite Horner? Mine's Krull, btw.
Horner is a legend. I loved his work in Enemy at the Gates, and Signs, and even some kiddy stuff like Land Before time! haha! He's a masterful composer, and this peice reminds me of Star Trek II and III
i never saw battle beyond the stars, but i love the works of james horner. i first heard this piece in the background music for the trailer to the never relaesed 1990 version of rodger corman's fantastic four. Then i found out it was the music to space raiders, then i found out it was a horner piece ( i guess thats why i gavitated to it.) then i found out that it is the soundtrack to batte beyond the stars. i'm confused, but i love this music and must get on cd. Horner rocks!!!!
This is a COOL score, even after 30 years it sounds good. I'm surprised James Horner didn't get an Oscar nomination for this SCORE or did he? Thanks for posting, bobbengan.
James Horner wasn't nominated until 1986. He received a Best Original Score nomination for Aliens and a Best Original Song nomination for "Somewhere Out There" from An American Tale. I was disappointed that he didn't receive a nomination for his music to Cocoon(1985), despite the fact that it had an almost literal twenty second quote from Star Trek II: The Wrath Of Kahn. Nonetheless, they had neglected him for too long.
Jim Horner. We owe you so much. Your an unknown cornerstone of American pop culture. Here's to you. Genius. Visionary. Dreamer. and seer of ... cool.. music..... things.

4. He likes his horns, this guy. Me too...
