Simon wasn't fully impressed because Kelly hadn't really hit her stride yet. She was singing nervously and, frankly, a little too timidly. Once she made it through the early rounds, she relaxed and began to show what she was really capable of. I think she has the single most amazing voice in music today, but I have to admit - her early attempts were not that great.

Even after Respect, which was the first time the public saw Kelly and was blown away by her, all he had to say was "I don't remember you." It wasn't until the next night after he realized how big of an impact she made on viewers and his mind started to change.
I'm a true KC fan. When Idol first started I didn't give it the time of day nor did I really start to appreciate KC until she released Breakaway. Thankfully the internet has old clips of idol and other performances which let me catch up on all that I missed. Watching this video, you can tell the KC was nervous. Looking at the audience they all had the same dream! KC is now living that dream. No one could have predicted that this girl would have became a super star nor IDOL would become a big hit

Kelly is good its just hard to sing a song that is specifically written for someone in her case "Save the Best for Last" was written for Vanessa Williams and her key and voice is so unique. I love Kelly but I really feel that Tamyra Gray deserved that year and was definently robbed of it that year.
i loved Kelly's voice but she over did the riffs at times. She sounds stronger and in key when she sings straight. I'm sure she's a million times better now tho:)

They wanted her to be the biggest pop star in the world and that's never been her agenda. She's now managed by Narvel Blackstock, Reba McEntire's husband and manager.

On an interview with Good Morning America, Simon Cowell was asked of the six American Idol winners, who he thought had the best voice. Cowell immediately answered that Clarkson did "by a mile". Saying she is right up there with the Christina, Whitney, and Mariah.. and those are my top 4 vocally. Celine is amazing, as well.
And vocally, Kelly has such a powerful, versatile, soul, country, rock, and original. I LOVE HER! Arion Berger of Rolling Stone has said of Clarkson that "her high notes are sweet and pillowy, her growl is bone-shaking and sexy, and her midrange is amazingly confident for a pop posy whose career is tied for eternity to the whims of her American Idol overlords."

I think he had a problem with her because she just took his snide remarks when judging her. So he didn't know how to handle or controll her. Paula tempered him. believe it or not. I don't think they truly understood that she was experienced in auditioning and the background in some recording that she had done. To me, this video is a sly edit job falsely implying that Simon said, "I just don't like this girl" about Kelly Clarkson at the end of this audition. I say the clip at the end (where Simon supposedly says this) was probably just edited in from footage taken after another, less impressive female singer had performed.
Tyko93 respectfully disagrees and says this is in fact exactly what Simon said about Kelly directly after this performance, as recorded on video without any special editing.
For the following three points, we are comparing the camera view at 0:41 with the view at 1:14.
1) I say this view probably comes from a set, unmonitored camera and that it is suspicious that the view is slightly more zoomed in at 1:14, like the shot came from a different time.
Tyko93 says there is a cameraperson there, and he/she zoomed the camera slightly.
I tend to doubt there was a cameraperson monitoring this camera because this was Ghetto Idol, but so be it. We respectfully disagree.
One last thing about this video that sort of interests me -- there is a nice shot of Kelly at 0:52 to 0:56 where the camera seems to be running on a dolly behind the judges. Unless this was a standard shot they did on every contestant for this audition, this seems suspiciously fancy to me for an early audition on Ghetto Idol. I say it *may* be evidence that not only the judges, but the producers and show runners suspected Kelly was pretty special very early on.
2) I say it is suspicious that Randy has a new kink in his collar at 1:14, like the shot came from a different time of day.
Tyko93 says it is because Randy is hunched over more, causing the kink.
Other than his head being lowered to write something 1:14, I dont think Randy is noticeably any more hunched over at 1:14 than he is at 0:41, but so be it. We respectfully disagree.
3) I say it is suspicious that Paula has only one strand of hair hanging down at 1:14 instead of two, like the shot came from a different time of day.
Tyko93 says it is because of gravity, but Tyko93 doesnt explain how gravity causes a strand of hair to fall up in this case. So be it. We respectfully disagree. The end.

in season 1 simon was looking for a stereotypical popstar...you know stick thin, diva-attitude, pretty, showing a lot of skin, etc. But kelly was humble, sweet, down to earth, girl next door quality, with a big voice. So that's why simon was eyeing justin guarini and tamyra, as they fit the mold of a typical popstar moreso than kelly.

I love you paula. Kelly was SO nervous, and paula can see THROUGH that. (while simon obv cant). A lot of people have a lot more to them than what we see in auditions. it's just people's nerves get the best of them.

On an interview with Good Morning America, Simon Cowell was asked of the six American Idol winners, who he thought had the best voice. Cowell immediately answered that Clarkson did "by a mile". Saying she is right up there with the Christina, Whitney, and Mariah.. and those are my top 4 vocally. Celine is amazing, as well.

@singingmysong20 be sure to go and buy her cd when it comes out in september. And I don't think he was really hating on her. I think he had a problem with her because she just took his snide remarks when judging her. So he didn't know how to handle or controll her. Paula tempered him. believe it or not. She seemed to ballance the three by being the go between. Outside of that, Kelly was still rough around the edges in looks, I think he had an issue with that. And her song selection.

@singingmysong20 I also have to say this, sorry continuing my last post...It took them a few shows in to the actual voting for them to understand she was serious. I don't think they truly understood that she was experienced in auditioning and the background in some recording that she had done. Not knowing who she was and what she'd been through prior put her at a dissadvantage with people who wanted to controll her. She's a force to be recond with.

You know? As a human you can only take so much bunk from people, and I think Clarkson has done VERY WELL in her music and with fame in general. One of the very few people I respect in the music business. I respect her a great deal. She is just so real and relatable.

To me, this video is a sly edit job falsely implying that Simon said, "I just don't like this girl" about Kelly Clarkson at the end of this audition. I say the clip at the end (where Simon supposedly says this) was probably just edited in from footage taken after another, less impressive female singer had performed.
Tyko93 respectfully disagrees and says this is in fact exactly what Simon said about Kelly directly after this performance, as recorded on video without any special editing.

For the following three points, we are comparing the camera view at 0:41 with the view at 1:14.
1) I say this view probably comes from a set, unmonitored camera and that it is suspicious that the view is slightly more zoomed in at 1:14, like the shot came from a different time.
Tyko93 says there is a cameraperson there, and he/she zoomed the camera slightly.
I tend to doubt there was a cameraperson monitoring this camera because this was Ghetto Idol, but so be it. We respectfully disagree.

One last thing about this video that sort of interests me -- there is a nice shot of Kelly at 0:52 to 0:56 where the camera seems to be running on a dolly behind the judges. Unless this was a standard shot they did on every contestant for this audition, this seems suspiciously fancy to me for an early audition on Ghetto Idol. I say it *may* be evidence that not only the judges, but the producers and show runners suspected Kelly was pretty special very early on.

Other than his head being lowered to write something 1:14, I dont think Randy is noticeably any more hunched over at 1:14 than he is at 0:41, but so be it. We respectfully disagree.

Simon supposedly saying, "I just don't like this girl" at 1:13 is nothing more than a sly edit job.
Compare the view of the judges at 0:41 to the view of the judges at 1:14.
1) The camera is suddenly zoomed in a little more.
2) Randy has a new little kink in his collar that he doesn't have just 30 seconds earlier.
3) Paula has only one strand of hair hanging down now instead of two.
Simon never said this about Kelly, at least not after this performance. It's an edit job.

in season 1 simon was looking for a stereotypical popstar...you know stick thin, diva-attitude, pretty, showing a lot of skin, etc. But kelly was humble, sweet, down to earth, girl next door quality, with a big voice. So that's why simon was eyeing justin guarini and tamyra, as they fit the mold of a typical popstar moreso than kelly.

i do love kelly but seriously how can you say she's better than Leona Lewis, you cant even compare these two, they have compleately diff voices and styles and Leona's it much more powerful i've seen them both sing live and Kelly was great and i love her but Leona amazing too!! Plus i've got to be honest i LOVE Vanessa Williams - and this was okay but it wasn't amazing! Kelly's own stuff is miles better than her doing a Vdub cover! :)
