I was there when this was happening. The 3 soldiers from C Co. 1-87 were out getting ready to fly a small unmaned radio controled airplane when this started. I forget thier names but the guy who says "we're smoking that mountain over there" was a tall blonde haired guy that drove a red grand am. And yes it was a rocket attack.
@johntygesen Grab a camera and record, there is nothing we can do. The rockets are timer fires from the mountains, something you can't do with mortars that have to be manned. Additionally, the predator drone would have picked up the enemy on the mountain, but there was nothing except launch sit heat from the rockets.
This brings back memories of Easter Sunday '09 when I got my CIB for a night-time indirect fire attack. And then being on the Brigade PSD we had to get the Strykers on REDCON1 within 15 mikes. We got hit up two 121mm rockets fired 8,000 meters away. God I hate indirect fire since you don't know where its gonna land.
Shit, this is intense. Imagine yourselves if you get one mortar strike on the right side of the vehicle, and the next one on the left side of the vehicle. You are like right in the middle of them. Man, I wouldn't wanna be them at that point.
@cassius969 Because to be honest, they just drop a mortar in the tube, turn, say "Allah hu ackbar!" and load in another shell. I've heard marine scout snipers tell me the same thing over and over. They just pray to their dead god that it hits something of value.
Thats insane. Imagine just standing there hearing it coming down and not knowing where its going to land...whether its at your feet or miles away...crazy...and you`d just want to see where they are firing from and take them out big time!!!
Unfortunatly your both wrong because we found the rocket remains in the hills. The prop them up again a rock and set a time to them.
If they had 60mm mortars the range is only 3000meters, 81mm mortars 5000meters, 120mm mortats 7000meters. In addiotion to the launch site being to far away for mortars, you would also hear a launch that sounds like a shotgun, because that is what sets off a mortar charge inside the tube. Oh yeah, you also need a tube, baseplate and bipod to launch mortars.
Hey people, someone has been claiming copyright infrigement on all my videos on you Tube, even though they are my files I dont know how they can do that. You Tube is threatening to take my video down. Any ideas?
61mm mortars carry a range of 2142 feet, 81mm 4000 feet and 120mm 6000 feet. There is a reason they are called "High Angle Hell" Think of a parabola, the reach high in the air and come down ontop the target, were a rocket would me more direct.
the whistleing is an effect from the fins that stabalize the rocket in flight, artillery is trying to destroy anyone who is still there....and any cache that might still be there before it launches.
They are unmanned sites, becuase some of the blow up and never take off. Rockets leave no trail behind them, you are thinking of Rocket propelled grenades.
The incoming are rockets, you can tell this becuase of the whistle they make, mortars do not make this whistle. They are using a tactic called "Direct Lay" where they aim the rockets towards their intended target, and set a timer.
There is away to see where they are coming from, the artillery guys mainly have this technology where they can use trajectory to calculate their position and return fire with their battery.
Mainly CAS? We didnt really have that luxury, they were always off station doing something else. Probably playing "Top Gun" with each other...zooomies!!!
No, artillery has more accuracy then that. The rockets are set on a timer and then directed toward their target, that is how they aim and why they are off some times.
Artillery would also created a dust cloud when it fired. There was a UAV on station that saw the launch site, which how our mortars dialed in and cleared the mountain range. Sad part is, I bet no one was there since the rockets are "set it and forget it"
Amazing. This really makes me appreciate more what it's like there. That would make me want to get in that jeep in go find the assholes that were shooting at my base.
Holy Hannah! It puts things into perspective and I wish there was more of this b/c I don't think people realize what the military is up against over there. I have goosebumps man.

not mortars, rockets, mortars come from above so you would never hear the sound until it is as ear level, then boom!
lcurle2001 3 years ago
depends on the range of where the mortars are those bastards can travel at one hell of an angle you know...plus rockets wont travel that far...

Thanks for the information.
Do they purposely make the rockets whistle to increase fear - as they did with bombs in WWII.
So artillery is trying to knock out other rockets before they launch?
I thought they would be manned and use the first landing rockets to better aim the next ones.
Do the rockets leave a trail to lead back to their launch site?
Then, using telescopes, find others and aim for them.
Thank you.

how the fuck can coalition forces fight against this kind of attack once u find them they go and hide in the mountains
rossdagill 3 years ago
90% of the time they are not even there. They set the rockets up on a timer and then hide like cowards.
lcurle2001 3 years ago
If that is really possible to do and be accurate, that is how I would do it.
Why get yourself killed needlessly?
But don't they need first explosion to readjust aim of others?
What are the incoming explosives?
Is there anyway to see from where they are being fired or launched?
Thank you.
