  • My new favorite Guy Clark song. You can't have just one.

  • can anyone tell me , is there a greatest hits with this song, the cape, and baby took a limo to Memphis on it??

  • @gsquared38 If you want all three with some other great stuff, "Together at the Bluebird Cafe" has those three plus some songs from Steve Earle and Townes Van Zandt, played in a small venue as a fundraiser.

  • @5562BigMike THANKS BIG MIKE I bought that cd a few years back ,it is AWESOME! I love the story about the gold tooth!! I am a huge Steve Earle fan, and that cd is how i discovered Guys Music What a great songwriter!!

  • @5562BigMike Emmylou Harris played on that same bill but somehow got cut out of the CD. Contract thing, probably. Hope it wasn't about a boys club mentality.

  • @gsquared38 Just buy as much Guy as you can.

  • Guy Clark is a living legend.

  • I really like this video of this song! He always does it great! It kinda fits anyone that ever lost a real love ! I love songs about real life! LOL Drinkin the cheapest most horrible tasteing drink, in order to forget about someone that you loved , but, craped on you.... gotta love it!

  • Oh, what a great song and performance. I like Jerry Douglas. He's one of the best slideplayers today.

  • How could anyone dislike a Guy Clark song???

  • Steve Earle does a damn fine version, too.

  • Guy Clark wrote this song, Townes covered it.

  • Guy

    Clark wrote this wonderful song...

  • good god.

  • God damn sometimes a song just speaks to your your predicaments.

  • Doc Watsons Columbus Stockade Blues is not on you tube

  • ladies and gentlemen Mr. Conway Twitty

  • damn. still one of the best songs ever written. been with me for years and never gets old.

  • i loved this guy from the git-go. oh and 5 people are stupid

  • shame on radio stations for not playing his music-but would rather play a same son 20 times a day!

  • great song well sung I really enjoy this song thanks from good old blighty

  • Such a "literate" song that speaks to both dreams and heart ache.

  • One of his best songs.

  • Pure Magic, created from genius. This version is tops in my book. Guy, I'm glad I dug a little deeper. Sought out the friends and kin of Townes. Willie & Merle sent me looking for Townes, so give them a nod. Or maybe I should say thank Willies daughter for bringing Pancho & lefty to her dad's attention way back.

  • A national treasure. Sure wish we still had Townes. Thank you so much.

  • in 2003 i was dealing with not being able to admit to being gay... I got drunk and was listeing to this song. later that night I tried to blow my brains out but my ignorance and drunken manner made me miss...it only put a hole through the bottom of my mouth and out the side of my cheek (fixed with plastic surgery). so this song always make me cry it is very sentimental to me

  • @slovakmath No excuses for missing a point blank shot like that. If your going to own a gun you really should learn how to use it.

  • @2009myraven Jesus.....really? These types of songs speak to our core, and someone has the courage to document the intersection of a tragic point in their lives with such a poignant tune. Slovak, you made it...make sure to help those who need the help coming to terms with themselves; 2009myraven, if you ever have a gay child, show more compassion than you are here.

  • Awesome...sad and poignant lyrics....beautiful and moving. I too, traveled the world trying to find peace and harmony after being 'dumped' by a woman I will always love. Experienced many things, saw things that most people never will, but had no one to share it with.....heartbreak does heal, but it leaves a nasty scar.

  • YOU FUCKING DAISIES!

  • One of the songs that changed my life. Guy Clark is the best.

  • nobody beats Texas singer-songwriters, the only real music out there (almost), love Guy Clark forever...

  • BURIED WITHIN THIS GREAT SONG IS A VERSE ABOUT THREE GENIUSES:

"I HAVE SEEN THE DAVID (MICHAELANGELO) SEEN THE MONA LISA TOO (DAVINCI) AND I HAVE HEARD DOC WATSON (GREATEST ACOUSTIC GUITAR PLAYER) PLAY COLUMBUS STOCKADE BLUES!!"

  • This is perhaps my favorite Guy Clark song ... I'm going to get to see him in a week and can hardly wait to hear this live one more time.

  • Just absolute perfection. Guy Clark is a master, and he collaborates with the highest caliber musicians. It doesn't get any better than this, folks.

  • Bodhran and dobro in the same line-up - now THERE's something you don't see very often.

  • tab anyone?

    wow this blew me away.

  • I'm a newborn fan thanks to willie, merle-Townes van zandt, steve earle-nanci griffith...so gratefull Guy Clark is a survivor...maybe he would credit his love-his life who's remained beside him...Fort worth-austin...all references to mr. van zandt

  • @steele917 I think might be possible to argue that Guy Clark, Steve Earle, and Townes van Zandt are some kind of holy trinity. (And by golly, would you believe it? They're all three from Texas.)

  • Amazing

  • just discovered this yesterday at the perfect time. I've had it on my ipod forever, but wow does it hit home...

  • Love it, thanks Donnie

  • mmmhhhh.....

  • mmmhhhh.....

  • Jeeze I love the country world.

  • Yeah Great from the get-go. Now I know why Townes was so close to Mr clark.

  • GUY CLARK IS THE GREATEST!

  • If thats Jerry Douglas on dobro then he looks a lot different.

  • Guy Clark and David Allan Coe! Thats my favorite combo.

  • what a great verse, "loved you when you said goodbye" , this is the first time I have heard this song...really good

  • F'n better than any Record you could buy. I don't see the new young Country sittin' down unplugged, raw, real, yet perfection. I stared lookin at Townes recently and he pointed me to Mr Clark.

  • Yup top three best songwriters to ever live. Townes Guy and Steve earle. Can't compare em and nobody can beat em...

  • L:ove this song wish my friend Andy would sing this......'

Guy your fantastic and man I love that dobro

  • Good style..Irish rough reality. But the words..No, thanks!

  • This is such a powerful song. It makes me reflect soooo much, damn.

  • Sigh ... on twentieth and fiftieth listening, it just keeps getting more beautiful. What a song.

  • @worldrimroamer absolutely----i love this song---embodies everything about great song writing----listen to this atleast twice a week and it gets better everytime

  • @worldrimroamer Better and better and Better. Sh*t this man should be studied...Perfect, perfect, perfect. Heartworn Highways sold me on this Son of the republic of Texas...I'm wonderin' though, that Susanna might just be his secret, when it comes to understanding his gift

  • @worldrimroamer Dammed sure says it all! be there too! best wishes friends !

  • Great song! Guy Clark is one of the best song writers alive! Karen Matheson is very good, but the best version of this song is the one on the album by the same name with Nanci Griffith doing harmony vocals.

  • I've always loved Karen Matheson's harmonies on this. Such a great contrast to Clark's evenly-raked fine gravel of a voice.

I wasted some time drinking cheap margaritas in Austin. It did poor things to my GPA at UT.

  • great song

  • who's playin dobro? I heard him say jerry, is that a younger long haired jerry douglas?

  • Yes it is.

  • I think it's Jay Unger.....

  • Nope! Jerry Douglas.. A younger Jerry Douglas.

  • Mad dog margaritas came after this song. . .

  • Guy Clark is amazing. Never knew about him 'til a few years ago, changed my life! Such a storyteller!

  • I just learned about Guy Clark a few months ago at an open mic. Incredible! "Immigrant Eyes" is my new theme song. What smooth style he's got.

  • just amazing

  • good stuff

  • I have 'The Dark' It's great !

  • One of the top 3 song writers ever

  • In your opinion, who are the other two?

  • @wwalkerp right behind Townes, he is one of Texas' best!

  • @wwalkerp What are the other 2? :-)

  • @wwalkerp I thank God that at 54 years of age I'm excited about music again. spent my life as a Beatle fan. then in 70's had to wait for the solo stuff. That's when I discovered country music, which I had abhored. Strange thing I like merle, willie, waylon hank JR. Kinda hillbilly don't ya think. Modern country is more annoying than modern pop.The wife passed and I looked up Pancho & lefty by willie & merle. from there I looked into Townes van zandt. Then Steve Earle, then Guy Clark. Thanks boys

  • @wwalkerp I agree, only Billy Joe Shaver and Kristofferson can say they're better in my opinion.

  • @HollywoodAdy what about james mcmurtry?

  • @wwalkerp

I hope you're referring to Townes Van Zandt, because he wrote this song?

  • @trevswindell Guy Clark wrote it. Go to the ASCAP website and do a title search for Dublin Blues. Guy Charles Clark wrote it, but it does have listed that Townes "Performed" it.

  • I have done most everything mentioned in this song.

I have been to Ft Worth, and spain, the spanish steps

I have seen the david, the mona lisa too

I have heard Doc Watson play columbus stockade blues

I have drunk a mad dog margarita in the chilly parlor bar (invented because of this song)

I have been too proud to come in out of the rain.

  • Haha...I'm almost there.

I've been to the Spanish Steps, but not Fort Worth or Spain.

I've seen the David, but not the Mona Lisa.

I've heard Doc Watson play "Columbus Stockade Blues" (it as at Hardly Strictly Bluegrass, Doc Watson Played it because Guy Clark was there).

  • Lucky, I heard doc play it only via recording with his grandson.

  • Honeychile, the Texas Chili Parlor ain't nobody's invention. It's right where it's been since 1976, at 1409 Lavaca Street in Austin. And Guy will have been neither the first nor the last to try to forget someone or something with the help of their Mad Dog 'ritas.

  • I never said the chili parlor was invented, just the ritas. According to them they had'nt ritas by the name til after he made the song.

  • Honeychile, the "mad dog margaritas" were on the menu until this song got out and about. Run down to Lavaca st. and ask Toby, if he still works there...

  • The Spanish steps are in Rome. Not in Spain. So you've been to both?

  • Yup, but on different trips. The David is in Florence.

  • Yeah, why was "Dark as a Dungeon" sung by Guy Clark taken off? Damn, I used to really enjoy it. Answers, please!

  • Guy Clark is a national treasure. This man is so amazing. I wish I was in Austin, having a mad dog margarita with him.

  • what exactly does Karen Matheson bring to this song?

  • I thought she was good

  • I think it's called harmony. I've heard it's all the rage now.

  • im just trying to figure out why a mundane back up singer deserves a mention and not the actual talent shes sitting next to.

  • If you know the history of TransAtlantic Sessions, which this is a video from, you would understand that they pair up various talents. Kathy Matheson is a very well known celtic singer. It just happens that she only sings harmony on this video. And, Guy Clark (who I admire and have seen in concert, is given top billing on the credit/title.

  • oh, cool. it makes sense now. thanks : )

  • Damn, given a fair wind it could catch on for sure.

  • WOW!

A fine songwriter, musician a treasure for all who enjoy this music..

    Thanks for sharing!

    *****

  • Guy Clark is great. These Transatlantic Sessions are remarkable. Thanks for sharing!

  • is there a session that jerry douglas didn't play? i mean that in the most complimentary of ways

  • Jerry Douglas should be on everything. Why was Dark as a Dungen by Guy Clack removed from list? J.D. is great on that track also.

  • he just takes it to the next level, eh?! what a man!

  • him and mike auldridge are the best.

  • This is cool. Reminds me of Kris Kristofferson....and just in case someone gets miffed, I think they are on equal standing. So is Darrel Scott right there with them.

  • Pure gold.

  • savage

  • So much love whenever this in my head.

Amazing! I love this and I truly mean it.

  • Billiant

  • Magnificent. Everything about this is magnificent, the singing, the instruments, pure perfection.

  • Yeah Mr. Clark you´ve been in Spain but never in Portugal, what a shame, not for you, but for this damn´ country.

  • Don't be so harsh on Portugal. At least you had DMB and you have them again this year. I feel lucky to be here ;P

  • What is DMB?

  • Dave Matthews Band - they're the best! :) Different kind of music that this piece, though.

  • I´m sorry but I can´t even imagine compare one thing to another, for me is like comparing a glass of old wine with a glass of cheap coke.

  • Who's saying about comparing those two? I only meant that you've got good bands visiting your country as well.

  • And I wouldn't call DMB "a glass of cheap coke". They just play different sort of music and are very good at it. You don't have to like it but do not belittle it.

  • Don´t be hungry with me my good friend it´s only my opinion, DMB is not one of my favs, GC is by far more important to me.

  • i just keep coming back

  • Quite the "all-star" band, no? Jay Ungar on fiddle! Wow!

  • Good News. Transatlantic Sessions Original Series (Series One) now available on PAL DVD - at long last

  • damn, damn, damn. It does not get better than this.

  • AMAZING tune... but did anyone else notice that guy and karen have the same haircut? lol

  • I first heard a Guy Clark song performed by an Irish singer, Freddie White.

  • well, to be honest, I'm not just italian... I'm from NAPLES, ok? And that means that in order to listen to country music, I've to go at least 600 km northward...

  • this dude pretty much rocks!

  • Guy is from the rare breed from West Texas. A flatland horizon gazer.

  • i never understood why he is not on regular country music stations his music is great

  • His music is played just about every day on "country stations" but someone else is singing it. "They" say his voice is "just not comercial enough"!! What a laugh! These are the same folks that think the Dixie Chicks are "country" Give me a break!!

  • LOL...true genius is never played on traditional country radio.

And the Chicks used to be country, until Natalie anyway.

  • @jjoosshhuuaattrree Tones never got played on the radio til Willi and Merle Recorded him. Blaze still hasn't had shit for radio play even though John prine covered Clay Pigeons and Merle Covered If I could Only Fly, and now that Steve has become a brilliant, subsversive revolutionary, man he doesn't get the airplay he did when he wa a rockabilly sensation.

  • Check out "Hello Friend" by Nick Beilfuss

  • Genius

  • One of the best 647 song I've ever listened

    to!

  • MR Guy Clark is one of the BEST OF ALL TIMES!

  • You'll be in my heart forever, Logan.

  • Amazing!

  • Must be sumthin in Texas water to have produced so many incredible songwriters; TVZ, Mr. Clark, James McMurtry, Blaze Foley, Rodney Crowell, etc.

  • Just great!

  • Texas' best contribution to the genre. And that's saying something.

  • Guy Clark = National TREASURE!!! We need more of him.

  • this tune hits me where it counts, no doubt

  • Oh, man... that was just awesome.

  • lol

  • I´m Portuguese and I´m only 31, but this is the best kind of music that i´ve ever listen.I listen country music since my teens thanks to guys like Guy Clark.

  • well, despite I'm Italian and I'm 23... I can say the same thing! :D

  • im american and 31...whoopdiflippindo

  • But at least in your country you have country music festivals, in my the only way of watching and listen this genre of music is goig to youtube...

ciao and keep always on country.

  • awesome.............

  • Guy Clark is as great a poet as Keats, Shelley, Blake.

  • please...

  • please what??. . . .for someone of the Optimus Prime generation you obviously know nothing of poetry or what it really represents. run along child

  • optimus prime rules!!! little did you know that he ghost wrote desperados waitin for a traiin....btw you must have a crowded pantheon, dylan must be head of the rebel alliance...gush

  • That puts Guy in some pretty good company - but I agree completely!

  • the first time i heard this song was at a local open mic night. its an awsome song. lot better than any hiphop crap my generation has fallen for. they just dont know good music.

  • Love that line about Doc Watson. Gives me chills.

  • Man I love this song he's great live. Doesn't need any voice overs. Absolutely, one of the greatest song writer of our time folk/country and hardly anyone knows about him, aside from Lyle Lovett(Step Inside My House and before), Steve Earle(Old No.1), Johnny Cash when he was alive..(Johnny99) etc.. etc.. etc..

  • I want a Mad dog margarita and a bowl of XXX chili..get my pic and status behind the bar at The chili Parlor......

  • One of the Great writers of our time Period. Horribly underrated! Sits up there with Johnny Prine, Dylan, Haggard etc

  • Beautiful song!!!

  • I heard Guy sing this in late 90's at Songwriters Festival in Gulf Shores,Al....what a GREAT SONG!!!

  • Lee Harvey Oswald's daughter was a waitress at Texas Chili Parlor in Austin for years some time ago.

  • Does anyone have "Blowin' Like a Bandit"? Ta, ~~""

  • My absolute favorite Guy Clark song, and an amazing version of it...

  • Best I've ever heard Dublin Blues. Thank you so much! Just saw Guy and Verlon on Dec. 1 07 at The Ark. He gets better and better and is lookin' great!

  • I would've loved to see Guy at the Ark. What a great venue. I miss Ann Arbor.

  • I have a copy of the Guy Clark show from the Ark last year if you are interested. Let me know...

    Thanks---Steve

  • I was at the Ark show too, and I have an audio recording of it that I would share with you if you would like it. Let me know. It was a great show, with Verlon Thompson performing as well.

  • This might be my favorite Guy song, even though it's among his 'later' work. His voice is spellbinding, a perfect folk/country voice. Nice that they put in a traditional Irish bodhran too. Listen to the version from Together at the Bluebird Cafe with Townes and Steve Earle, Guy messes up a little on the riff and it makes the song all the sweeter.

  • OUTSTANDING! Thank you for sharing!

  • That's mighty fine!

  • I grew up around Rockport,Texas, where Guy grew up. His Dad was the County Attorney where I was a Deputy Sheriff. I worked with his sister for some years, a finer Texas family you will not find. I am damned proud he is a fellow Texan.

  • The only reason I went to Austin City Limits music fest last year was to see Guy Clark. He and Verlon Thomp-son put on an amazing show.
