Suz and I had third row centre seats in London last year. AWESOME concert. We hit some black ice on the way home on a bend near a bridge and went thirty feet down an embankment into deeeeep snow. Walked home frozen at 2 am . We were so pumped after seeing John that the accident didn't even fizz us ! Shivering and chatting about what a great time we had all the way home !

I ve been following mayer since his self-released album and I am still amazed by his growth as an artist this past ten years. His voice control is infinitely better, his lyrics more insightful and his guitar playing much more personal and tasteful. If i had to pick one performance of all his repertoir, it would probably have to be this one. It's perfect.

There's even a point in time when he encourages them to cheer after he's done, because they're so quiet. I can name you several other artists you'd appreciate. Try Willie Porter. I can assure you his guitarplay equals Mayer's. It's less catchy, but the technique is equally impressive.

Neon isn't as bad as you think it is - he's got much more technical guitar work. Neon is easy once you learn to do the picking correctly (lots of practice)

@inchskater yes, however john mayer plays with the "baseball grip" in the style of guys like Jimi Hendrix and Stevie Ray Vaughn. He has developed his technique so much with his thumb that the stretch is fairly effortless for him. Its like if he plays a standard G shape or a standard Cadd9 shape like in Not Myself, he hits the bassnote G with his thumb, and the bassnote C with his thumb on the A-string.

Sonically doesn't make a difference, its just comfort. :D

the flicking technique takes some practice, but once you have it it makes this song, heart of life, and maybe some others easy. you just have to flick down with your pointer at the same time you slap with your thumb. doing it with your wrist cocked makes it easier and sound better too
