By the sounds of it you are referring to WoW type things, I've never played it so can't give you an accurate idea. However Guild Wars has two factions known as Luxon and Kurzick which can compete against each other in pvp matches.

not really. what it is is that you can choose to join a guild which are called Kurzick and Luxon. neither is good or evil they are just two different factions. one is for earth and the other for water. and at any point you can choose to either switch guilds and your factions or choose not to be of one at all. doesnt affect gameplay in anyway like how in WoW horde will go kill alliance. since when out of town you get your own copy of the map.

Skill trainer in the GH only gives out core skills already unlocked. And if he is new, he won't have any. Nothing wrong with just playing the game and not taking short cuts. You actually learn to play better that way.
