i prune my lavenders back hard in the winter. one thing you want to do is open the bush up by removing some of the branches from the middle so sunlight can penetrate the bush if you have a large plant . always water the plant after a hard pruning very heavily if you live in an area that does not freeze. light prune only in the summer after the flowers are dead you can head them off. Lavenders also do well when artistically shaped if you shape them in the winter.
Are these pruning methods for any variety of lavender? I just planted one of a Spanish variety (otto quast). Would appreciate a response for anyone out there.
i'd still prune it but not so hard, conditions sound harsh so you need to leave it enough to get by on even tho its dormant, prune harder late winter/early spring, hope this helps!
It is now hard winter in Kansas. I just watched your video on lavender and am wondering if I would be able to go ahead and cut this back now...I only planted it this Spring and it did really well, but it now has been snowed on several times and is in total dormancy. I will now know how to prune this coming season, but would like to give it the best look for the coming Spring. What do you think??
Hi I planted lavender this spring - south facing in a bed at the front of the house. It grew to about a foot tall but never did flower? Any idea why ? thanks so much

I planted a couple small lavender plants last year, and it made a nice bush. It grew about 2 feet, but not many flowers. Pretty plant though.
We are coming into spring, and about to get my garden going. Should I cut my lavender plant back now, and as short as you showed?
I hope to get an answer, as I am one of your most watched fans. By the way, you never replied, when I asked - Why did you cut your hair! PEACE Bro.

hmm, I guess it's a good idea to do that especially colder places like Pittsburgh(here I am)It dies back a bit.
I planted some that grew great but died when we had a very cold -5F, er that's -23C. I had a cold backyard then, very dark in the winter.

it will require a good amount of sun to flower, maybe some fertiliser too. thats the usual reasons, hope this helps!
