It shows behind all the happy sounds, there was a lot of pressure in the recording sessions, lots of time pressure, because the group had to do gigs as well. Because they were a hit group, there was extra perfectionism on the sessions, they had to be just right. As noted by others, the young Beach Boys had attention deficit disorder and raging hormones to contend with.
@2:40 whats with the scream.? lol it would be really cool if they had an acual video so you could understand half the things they're doing in there lol
It's a wonder a SHHHHHH!!! (and other chatter) didn't end up mixed in somewhere in the final mix!! ... I know.. they are just kids... and they had been around for a while... and in the studio quite a bit, by this point in their career...It's almost as if none of the boys (but Brian) had any interest in the recording...or it's quality...!!
Murry was NOT at this session. He would have been blowing his stack if he had been. Besides, Murry had been fired well before this song was recorded. His drunken tirade during the "Help Me Rhonda" sessions was pretty much the last time he was allowed in a BB recording session.
My God, have we ever been spoiled by ProTools. How many times did that tape have to be rewound? How did Britz put up with that? Interesting to hear the voices of the "wrecking crew" on the basic tracks....and somebody please fix that talkback switch.
@TheBeachboys4ever Yes, think I read something about the filmmakers wanting to take "A Beautiful Mind" approach. That was a brilliant film. I've also read recently about the development of a Beach Boys musical, using the music to tell someone else's story - a la Mamma Mia. All this, along with the impending release of the original SMiLE sessions makes it an exciting time to be a BBs fan! :)
Brian asks "is that okay, pop?" and we hear someone saying "be happy" who sounds very much like Murry. Methinks he WAS present. It's a wonder those kids ever got anything recorded, lol. These tapes are fab. So much material there for the people writing the BW biopic!
@KreeshaMe Yeah, Murry was behaving himself here but the boys certainly weren't! Excited about the Brian Wilson movie, but producer Bill Pohlad says it won't be a biopic: "What's fascinating to me is to look at the different elements in his life, like that super-creative period when he was doing Pet Sounds and the later part when he was redeemed."
@KreeshaMe Actually,at :49 Brian says "Does that sound good Bob? Bad?" And Bob tells him "It sounds great". Bob is Bob Norberg (aka Bob Norman) who was Brian's roommate prior to Brian's marriage to Marilyn and also one of "The Survivors" who recorded "Pamela Jean" (also available on YouTube).
Fairly sure that's engineer Chuck Britz calling the takes, not Murray. I don't know who the other guy with the deep voice is at the beginning. Keep in mind Brian and Mike are around 22 here, Dennis 20, Carl 18. So they're just college-age kids screwing around at the end of a long, tedious session. Take 13!? Chuck's voice gets wearier and wearier.
Sure blows the clean-cut image we all had of the Boys. And what the hell did Mike have to get up a 4am for? They were already stars by the time this session took place.

It's obvious based on how much fooling around was going on during the recording of this track that none of them had grown up to be a man yet.
