I watched Life is Sweet with my dad when I was about ten years old and we both loved it. Our favorite character was Aubrey, and for years afterward my dad would crack me up with his Aubrey impression. It was wonderful to see the film again after all these years. I'd much rather watch something like this than the latest special effects-laden Hollywood junk, full of sound and fury, signifying nothing.
Just discovered Mike Leigh having seen Naked 2 months ago, best director ever! Such endearing stories and so intricately told, pure artwork. The little details of normal life were never so starkly realised in film!
And I must pay tribute to the sheer talent that he recruits consistently in his productions. Every character in this seemed so neurotic but came across so naturally. Just like real people.
Pointless stupid ending. just empty and no conclusion. It could have been a great film if there was more to it! What a shame! Also what happened to Aubrey?
okay it's official... LIFE IS SWEET is one of my all time favourite films. i fell in love with the character wendy but for me jane horrocks just about stole the film...
also, its really funny to see two such chirpy, upbeat characters having raised such morose and neurotic children!!
so true to life, brought back the early 90s so vividly... thanx so much for sharing!
Thank you for sharing this. I didn't think I'd ever see it again. The scene between Nicola and her mother makes me cry--I had conversations like that with my mother, and I'm having them now with my eldest daughter. Life may be sweet, but it can definitely be hard.
Man, any other director and I woulda been like, "wtf?! How pointless!" But Mike Leigh is a genius, really-- this was great, kinda makes me think girl verision of his Meantime. Thanks for uploading!
P.s. Horray for David Thewlis and the character he played here! I just wish someone would upload Naked.
This film was made the same year I was born

Every now and again you come across a film completely by accident and you are oh so glad you did............

Thanks for this. I used to work for Mike Leigh's producer Simon Channing Williams (RIP) - best boss I ever had.

@tabby2k2 Sounds like you're seeking some kind of closure?
MickeyLove01 1 year ago
@tabby2k2 There was a conclusion--the sisters had an honest conversation and there was hope for change. That's the whole point with Mike Leigh.

No -in real life there never is any ending. This is just them coming to terms with each other and what has happened. Just the best any of us can do.
