The IS-F is outperformed in every way by an M3. It's the poser's M3. Its 2 seconds slower around Silverstone and 1.6 seconds slower around the Top Gear track versus the M3 Sedan for crying out loud. It needs an extra liter of displacement to make comparable horsepower to the M3. The IS-F engine is rubbish it makes 83 HP/L, the M3's V8 makes 103.5 HP/L. Engine of The Year Awards: BMW - 47, Lexus - NONE.

twitchmassacre I totally agree that the M3 is a better car, in almost every aspect of performance, but don't get too hung up on hp/L ratio. Some manufacturers go about making horsepower in different ways. Turbos and large displacement is another school of thought. The Z06 doesn't have a great hp/L ratio but it doesn't matter. It gets 26mpg on the highway and 500hp. The M V8 is great though, and I'm on my second M. The next m3 will be turbo 6 unfortunately...

You're right, manufacturers go about making HP in different ways, but I will take an award winning BMW 5L S85 NA V10 making 507 HP over an LS7 7L 505 HP V8 any day. In much the same way as I would take a 562 HP 4.5L V8 with a 9,000 RPM redline (Ferrari 458 Italia) over a 560 HP Lamborghini 5.2L V10.

The BMW S85 V10 is also hand made in BMW's plant in Graching, it is 100x more technological and advanced, it might not produce as much torque as a high displacement V8 like the LS7 but it is a very rev happy engine and it is designed to access power from a wide rev band. Have you seen the E30 M3 equipped with the S85 V10? It makes even the ZR1 look bad.
