It would be cool if Chris Nolan works on this project. But I agree Saw started off intelligent. But I still think this project should be given to Chris Nolan. This movie kicked a lot of ass when it came out. The soundtrack was sick, the CG was great for it's time, and the general plot was decent. (or atleast, decent enough for me)
Eh, it was okay. The story was great, and I agree with everyone else about the CGI, but what really brought it down for my was the acting. Spawn and Merlin were hairline actors and I found the little kid annoying, but overall it was a great movie for its time. I guess what bugged me the most was its disloyalty/overloyalty to the comics, where some were just wrong and others were just trying too hard. I think that if someone made a reboot/sequel it could soar if they gave it a bit more grit.

When I first saw the movie I loved it. But that was before I saw the animated series and read the comics. This movie is a shadow of what should have been. We don't need a sequal, we need a remake based on the core material.
We now know that comic book movies can stick close to their root story and still work, be popular and pull in the crowds (eg. Spider-man, Hellboy & most recently Watchmen). So I feel a remake is a more logical step.

Even though having the mask on more does seem to higher tension, I think the directors and makers of this movie were aiming to be as much faithful to the comic as possible. (even though they weren't), but in the comic -- Al doesn't have his mask on at all times, so perhaps that was something they chose to keep in the movie.
I didn't think Violator wasn't vulgar enough in the movie, that's my opinion. =/

I agree with you on all the pints. Those were the only things that kind of made me feel uneasy. I wish the movie would have had better CGI kind of like the ones from the crow. they freaking photo shopped Lee's face onto a stunt double perfectly.

Interesting review! I agree, although actually the main problem I had was too much CGI. The sequences of Hell would have been much better if less of the place had been seen. Hell even in the comics isn't really defined, but the movie made it look like a little cave full of lava XD

Ya, Todd McFarlene said he's gonna direct, write, and produce. But I heard him say in an interview this stupid concept where it's gonna have a "Departed" esque setting and Spawn will be the only CGI thing there and that he won't talk. Movie was pretty disappointing. Michael Jai White was not the best choice for Spawn, they should have gotten Keith David, or at least gotten him to do Spawn's voice he already did a great job for the HBO series. Why did they make Terry white he's black and they're no justifiable reason for changing it. The reviewer is correct not enough mask or cape scenes, technically the cape should always be there. John Lequezamo did kick ass as Clown. Spawn deserves a much better movie than this.
Spawn is a dead guy, his face is fucked up to begin with. The reason why Spawn didn't care to wear the mask is because, what would be the point? The only reason why super heros have masks is to kept from the law of being a vigilante, and to keep his identity hidden from villains. Spawn doesn't have an alter ego, so there is no need for a mask. And just to back up my point, in the animated series, he could take form of anything he wished. That's beyond anything of what a mask could do.
Yes this movie did suck, but I did however like Michael Jai White's portrayal as Spawn, and I am a huge John Leguezamo fan anyway. In fact, I actually met White years ago and got his autograph. Christopher Nolan is NOT the right person to make the next Spawn movie. Yes, he did The Dark Knight a great movie - BUT that one is realistic. Spawn is everything else than realistic, and I think it's good that Todd McFarlene himself will make the next movie.

Cool review, although the movie DID win Special Effects Movie of the Year in '97. I remember being surprised because the CG in Batman & Robin was jaw-dropping, although I always thought the cape/mask CG was pretty cool - but the clowns head being chopped off and the Hell scenes were a little weak. By today's standards, yes that can be done at home.

Yeah, nailed it with clown and violator. John was the only redeeming thing in the movie. This version of spawn didn't seem pissed off enough, just more agitated. This movie should of been held in production for another five years to one-up everything.

Interesting review! I agree, although actually the main problem I had was too much CGI. The sequences of Hell would have been much better if less of the place had been seen. Hell even in the comics isn't really defined, but the movie made it look like a little cave full of lava XD
If they do a remake I think Djimon Hounsou would be an interesting Spawn.

Tbh it did come out in 1997, the special effects in part would still be accepted to date. I hope they remake it...i think it would be cool to see al do a couple of missions like in the comic before he becomes spawn or even if they took up a different spawn like the gunslinger or raven.

Ya, Todd McFarlene said he's gonna direct, write, and produce. But I heard him say in an interview this stupid concept where it's gonna have a "Departed" esque setting and Spawn will be the only CGI thing there and that he won't talk. It's a really bad concept, I think they should just keep it close to the comic.

they should have just made one movie consisting of all the greatness of the animated series from HBO, but edited to fit a 3 hour long movie due to the incredible yet very complicated story. Watchmen was known as "the unmakeable movie" because of such a great yet deep storyline. well, they did it. someone could do it for Spaun too.

Movie was pretty disappointing. Michael Jai White was not the best choice for Spawn, they should have gotten Keith David, or at least gotten him to do Spawn's voice he already did a great job for the HBO series. Why did they make Terry white he's black and they're no justifiable reason for changing it. The reviewer is correct not enough mask or cape scenes, technically the cape should always be there. John Lequezamo did kick ass as Clown. Spawn deserves a much better movie than this.

Spawn is a dead guy, his face is fucked up to begin with. The reason why Spawn didn't care to wear the mask is because, what would be the point? The only reason why super heros have masks is to kept from the law of being a vigilante, and to keep his identity hidden from villains. Spawn doesn't have an alter ego, so there is no need for a mask. And just to back up my point, in the animated series, he could take form of anything he wished. That's beyond anything of what a mask could do.

Yes this movie did suck, but I did however like Michael Jai White's portrayal as Spawn, and I am a huge John Leguezamo fan anyway. In fact, I actually met White years ago and got his autograph. I can't wait until the franchise makes a comeback, but hollywood needs to go back and re-read the comics, and watch the kickass HBO cartoon. I miss that show. Cool review, although the movie DID win Special Effects Movie of the Year in '97. I remember being surprised because the CG in Batman & Robin was jaw-dropping, although I always thought the cape/mask CG was pretty cool - but the clowns head being chopped off and the Hell scenes were a little weak. By today's standards, yes that can be done at home.
