I just came out on facebook over the last few days. This was probably not my best decision, partly because it's so impersonal, but also because my dad didn't see my big coming out post, so he started messaging me about all of my LGBT posts I've been making, so I had to tell him personally, which got really awkward.
i plan to come out soon, my friends know and are always like making me wear dresses and all, but i really like it, its fun... i don't walk gay, do anything gay, i just like wearing the dresses lol. but people discriminating gays is not even funny, we're no different, i have quite good grades in school, im a good pupil, if u need advice, im there, everyone really likes me.... so yeah, why are we different from straight people? :S:S p.s who said god was real, so yeah boys are ok, cos its cool....
I am an important person and I am gay. I am important member of my community not because I am gay. being in or out of the closet doesn't effect who I am or my personality. Why would it bother you whether or not someone else "comes out"? That's an incredibly personal experience, unique to the individual. Id' exect you as a gay person of all people to be sensitive to that and non judgmental. Your path is not everone else's.

For the most part I really like what you have to say here, but you have to understand that not everyone here in the US is actually *able* to be out and proud. There are still ass-backward parents that will throw their kids out of the house for being gay. There are still areas that you can lose your job if you are out and proud. And, yes.. there are still people out there that can be killed for being out and proud. Telling people that you are "frustrated" by closeted gays is inappropriate.
I wish I could come out, but being a gay arab, it's almost impossible to come out.. However, I managed to convince my once homophobic friend that homosexuality is okay by coming out to him.. I came out to a couple of my friends, who were all supportive, and my sister, but that went badly and still continues to be bad.. I decided to hold up on coming out to the rest of my family since my sister's the most open minded one of them.. I'm secure of my sexuality and I'm damn well proud :)
@zack1135 I completely agree. You do not have to be out, to be loud and proud. You can live a successful and healthy gay person without being out. I think everyone should consider the cultural values behind coming out, and how these values are different depending on your backgroud/family/culture/etc.

I have a cousin who is very open minded and when I came out she didn't take it well and tried to put me back in the closet.
I hear you, but it's not that easy! I'm 24 & though I have student loans, I still needed help from my parents to get me through college. I stupidly came out & now I have to live with coming out & my parents. I don't blame others for not coming out, I think even Dan Savage says if you are still financially dependent (college, living @ home) to stay in until you aren't. It sucks but it's smart. Plus its incentive to get the hell out as fast as you can so you can get on w/ your real life!

As for mom and dad, old school through and through. This was a wonderful video. Another thing to consider is that for every person who comes out, the demographic of gay people changes. And, one day, when enough people are open with who they are, everyone will realise that gay people are just people with hopes and dreams like everyone else. Most of us here in my place are so isolated from eachother that we arent able to connect with most of the others out there due to fear . I'm mostly closeted. I've told all of my closest friends that I'm bi, and got nothing but love in return. My parents are a different story. They read my text messages and saw how I came out as bi to one of my friends. They decided they needed to "talk" to me. For the most part I really like what you have to say here, but you have to understand that not everyone here in the US is actually *able* to be out and proud. There are still ass-backward parents that will throw their kids out of the house for being gay. There are still areas that you can lose your job if you are out and proud. And, yes.. there are still people out there that can be killed for being out and proud. Telling people that you are "frustrated" by closeted gays is inappropriate.

I wish I could come out, but being a gay arab, it's almost impossible to come out.. However, I managed to convince my once homophobic friend that homosexuality is okay by coming out to him.. I came out to a couple of my friends, who were all supportive, and my sister, but that went badly and still continues to be bad.. I decided to hold up on coming out to the rest of my family since my sister's the most open minded one of them.. I'm secure of my sexuality and I'm damn well proud :)

I think everyone should consider the cultural values behind coming out, and how these values are different depending on your backgroud/family/culture/etc.

I hear you, but it's not that easy! I'm 24 & though I have student loans, I still needed help from my parents to get me through college. I stupidly came out & now I have to live with coming out & my parents. I don't blame others for not coming out, I think even Dan Savage says if you are still financially dependent (college, living @ home) to stay in until you aren't. It sucks but it's smart. Plus its incentive to get the hell out as fast as you can so you can get on w/ your real life!

As for mom and dad, old school through and through. Granted I most likely have the fall out built up in my head worse than what it would actually be, but I feel hopeless when it comes to them sometimes. Now that I have people that know and are supportive, it pisses me off that I I still have a few egg shels to walk on. Not much longer hopefully

I don't think anyone needs to go around screaming, "Hey guys, my name is _____ and I'm queer!" But I think a lot of people go to great lengths to hide those facts. I know I've had problems in my past because I was sort of kind of almost involved with a girl who was very deeply rooted in the closet. I told her I'd have a hard time dating someone who I couldn't hold hands with in public, give a quick kiss to, and go to Homecoming and Prom with.

This was a wonderful video. Another thing to consider is that for every person who comes out, the demographic of gay people changes. And, one day, when enough people are open with who they are, everyone will realise that gay people are just people with hopes and dreams like everyone else. Most of us here in my place are so isolated from eachother that we arent able to connect with most of the others out there due to fear .
