  • You can use your toothbrush to expoliate.

  • Did anyone ever tell you you look like Maggie Q from nikita?

  • hey, just wanted to say stores sell decorative food coloring pen type things, and they are almost exactly like those marker lipstains!

  • My daughter had a science project the other night using food coloring , and I used it on her lips and.......wow...it worked like magic. try it.

  • love the idea. Can't wait to try it!

  • lol, I found this out when I was 10 years old...

  • does food coloring actually cause cancer?

  • @AlisonHudgens Because it goes into food, it falls under the control of the FDA. If there were any substantial evidence that food coloring causes cancer, the FDA would pull it off the market. However, if you are concerned about it, try natural colorings like beet juice.

  • u should have more views than this : ) ...Thanks!

  • @macabrechaos Thanks...tell your friends! haha

  • I own and use MAC lip stain and Revlon... as a girl used to play with the food coloring... and OMG.... is for real the food coloring does the kind of red I like and only for $3 (tax inc.)

TY TY TY... I cant thank you enough!

  • great idea! Have you found that it lasts all day?

  • @sosoconsistent At least several hours...but I have a habit of exfoliating my lips throughout the day...so I've never really tested how long it can last. I hate having dead skin on my lips, so I go to the bathroom and use a paper towel to exfoliate my lips in the middle of the day...

  • oooohhh i tried it and it was a little dark but i put on lip gloss and ina little while it faded and was sooo cute!!!!!:)

  • thank you sooo much i was just about to spend alot of cask on permanent lip makeup but now i see idont have to thanks girl

  • @teinaknowles1 Glad you found it useful! I'm always game for saving money.

  • Thanks so much for this idea. I've been looking for a true red stain, not orange or pink or burgundy or... This might just be it!

  • i love putting it in the center so it looks like I just ate a popsicle : )

    Thanks!

  • thank you so much u've saved me tonnes of dollars :D

  • You're Welcome. : )

  • brilliant!!!!!!! im poor so im all about cheap fixes thank you so much ^-^

  • This is so good! I was wondering about food colouring for a while, so thank you! xxx

  • Very cool! Thanks for the comment. I've heard of people using beetroot juice. I'd never heard about soot as eyeshadow, but it makes sense.

  • Hi! This was perfect! i was about to shell out $20 for Red lip stain and I am so happy that I don't have to now! I added some clear lipgloss overtop and it looks stunning!

  • Always happy to help!

  • hi, just wondering, if i made up a bit of this how long would it last? i mean could i put it in a jar like you did so i wouldnt have to make up new stuff every time i wanted to use it? or would it go a bit off or something.

  • A viewer suggested adding a bit of alcohol to keep it from going bad. Just don't use too much, it'll dry out your lips. The biggest problem I've had was that my jar wasn't quite air tight and the water evaporated. All I had left was red powder...but I added water and re-constituted it, and all was well.

  • your lips look gorgeous babe , you are very clever:D imma try this now! ill tell if it works

  • Wow, I never would have thought of using food coloring as a lip stain. That's great since lip stain is $15 at Sephora, but food coloring is only a couple dollars! Thanks for sharing this.

I have a question though, if you used a lip conditioner before you put the stain on, would you still need to put a balm on top?

  • I suggest applying this to completely bare lips. Or at least use the lip conditioner the night before. Your lips should be dry (not chapped dry, but free of oils) so that the water-based food coloring will stick to your lips. You can experiment and see what works, but it might be best to use the lip conditioner after applying the stain.

  • cnt u get like lip poisoning or anything cos i heard its not supposed to be used alone cos its concentrated, u sure about this cos dnt wnna risk aanything

  • food coloring is non-toxic, otherwise, you wouldn't be able to eat it. Plus this is water-based coloring, not the paste type (which is super-concentrated). If it is really a concern for you, purchase organic food coloring. In the end, you are not applying any more food coloring than you would get from eating a popsicle, so it's fine. If it would make you more comfortable, find a coloring made from beet juice, last I heard vegetables won't kill you.

  • Hmm...interesting. Have you tried adding a few drops to some vasoline?

  • My food coloring is water-based, so I would not be able to mix it with oil-based vaseline. You would have to find an emulsifying agent (something that helps oil and water mix) or find an oil-based food coloring.

  • if just red is a bit to much red, you can add little bits of other colors to tone it down a bit. blue can make it a bit darker and cooler, since red + blue = purple. Yellow can make it warmer and a bit brighter red+yellow =orange you can goolge color wheel to get the possible color variations. and also using a blue tint (more like a light blue tinted lip gloss over it) makes your teeth look whiter.

  • cool tips. Thanks! I have a color wheel at home for my paintings and other art projects. I'll have to stick to the warmer colors since my skin has a yellow undertone.

  • you reckon you could use the red food colouring on your cheeks as blush too?

  • maybe, but it might be difficult to blend. Maybe if you mix it with a water based moisturizer first?

  • omg!! lol best idea EVER <3 thanks

  • oh and add 1-2 drops of alcohol to the mixture to keep it fresh :)

  • good tip!

  • i tried this-works great!

except the food coloring & water mixture starts to smell after a day or so. And the red is a bit to noticeable.

    thanx 4 the vid :)

  • Great idea.....lip stain is my favorite cosmetic!

  • i love it =]

    kissproof and drinkproof

    great idea!

  • Thanks!

  • i thought about using food colourin wen making my own plumpin lip stain, so i googled it 2 see how to do it an found this! i tried just food colouring on its own like u showed and it works so well, its better than quite a few lip stains ive tried, which end up lookin darker in places. i used red but only a lil bit coz red doesnt suit me but i wanted to see how it works, im gonna buy pink food colourin :)

    fanx 4 the video xx

  • Did you find out how to make the lip plumper?

  • Wow! that is pretty different. I will try it.

  • Let me know if it works for you. Remember not to water it down a bit so it won't be too bright.

  • I meant TO water it down a bit...haha

  • yepp, bought some empty roller ball lipgloss things, sweet almond oil, cinnamon oil and liquid niacin, with pink food colouring!

i havent made it yet tho gona try it tonight.

the oils soak in well and plump the lips, niacin dilates blood vessels n makes them swell, so when the oils are soaked in your lips will be plump an pink from the food colouring! i hope it works, aparently it does! x

  • very cool. I hope it works too. I'm always up for budget friendly makeup! This sounds MUCH cheaper than the plumping products out there right now.
