increase minimum wage= increase wealth for the people....
if u dont believe...just wonder what the wage was in the past, RELATIVELY, i KNOW the dollar is worth much more back then, but still, relatively, working conditions were worse, wages were worse, and they got better, we got better, sooo....
increase minimum wage = increase in wealth of worker + decrease in wealth of employer + decrease in number of workers + increase in number of hours worked
Not very good satire which overlooks the fact that minimum wage hikes, while they sound good, will have a negative impact on the economy. Why? If a business is forced to pay more for its employees, it will have to come up with the money from somewhere. That means it will 1) cut back on new hires, 2) fire some people, or 3) hike prices.
Actually, that only applies to small businesses/corporations, because large corporations can afford a hike in the minimum wage (also, most of them aren't paying min. wage anyway). Also, the dems want to increase the min. wage to benefit union workers (their pay is usually a multiple of the min. wage). Also, there is no point in increasing the min. wage if people still can't afford to live off the min. wage.
The thing is large corporations will not let that hurt their profits. Thus they too will do one of the options I listed. I do agree that this hike is a benefit to union workers which is why the Dems are pushing it.
Do you seriously think business will accept a lower return if it doesn't have to? If it did, that means lower return for stockholders who, in turn, would think seriously about moving their investments elsewhere. That, in turn, would hurt the company even more and may even cause it to collapse.
As to "keeping millions in poverty", no one is forcing anyone to stay in poverty.
Have you ever been stuck in the minimum wage bracket?
Mate in Australia we have a much higher - much more reasonable minimum wage. We also have much better government assistence for people who wish to return to study or further training.
In the US - most of this stuff doesn't exist.
Tell me - how long can you claim social security benefits for in the US?
No one who shows any initiative at ALL stays in miminum wage for very long. NO ONE. My mother-in-law went back to work for the first time in almost two decades and did so at a McDonald's. She was at minimum wage for a few months and was soon making much, much more. Where I live, minimum wage jobs are actually hard to find given most places employ at much higher wages.
The US economy is just fine, thank you very much.
As to SS benefits, when one retires, one can claim those to death.
I already know the answers to the questions. Unemployment is around 4.4% (very low). The last inflation percentage calculated was at 1.3%. Interest rates for a 30 year mortgage is 5.65%. GDP is doing fairly well and has been for quite some time even after Katrina. Foreign debt and trade, while troubling, are hardly devestating. So, yes, the US economy is fine.
Now are you ready to admit that no one is forced to stay in minimum wage employment?
Not really. It may not be in your area, city, or state. But it certainly is in your country. Namely black and hispanic workers from disadvantaged back-grounds.
I would be curious as to how stable the US economy is. With government debt at 60% of GDP - and a Government constantly trying to fund a war - I wouldn't be surprised if the lack of ammendedment to minimum wages (with real minimum wage down 29% between '79 & '03) is to offset demand pull inflation caused be excessive govt spending.
I don't know where you're getting this from, but my area, city and state has Hispanic and black workers as well as disadvantaged whites. The fact is anyone who shows initiative will not be at minimum wage for long, and I do mean ANYONE in the country. I do live here, you know.
cows are hardly dumb, and in most other cultures calling someone a cow can be a compliment. Why, thank you. I've never read archie comics, but apparently you have. Maybe you can tell me more about them over a glass of milk, and you can call me more snively barnyard names. If you know so much about farms and farm animals, you might be able to grow yourself a sense of humour.
yepyep123, unfortunately, most people in America do believe what they hear and see in the media. That is the problem, they do not investigate. I doubt if half of them know their elected officials or know who is running in the next elections. sigh
It shouldn't need to be said, but I guess it does - this is satire. While CA has like 53 US reps, Sherri Davis isn't one of them. There is a Susan Davis, but she's a democrat.
The minimum wage is not $5.25 as posted. It is $5.15 and yes, it has been for 10 years. What we need is LESS fed involvement and something a little more retro like local community programs to find food, work, and homes for the down and out in our society.
Incidently, the phrase is: "If it ain't broke, don't fix it". And honey? It is broken all to hell and gone!

Or 4) accept a lower return on investment.
Your economy must be absolutely in the shitter if you need to keep millions in poverty to keep inflation low.
For starters, isn't your inflation target like 1 - 1.5%? Is that necessary?
Ours is 2 - 3% - and the Australian economy hasn't had a recession in over 12 years.

The US economy is fine?
What is your inflation running at?
What are interest rates running at?
What is your trade balance? Current account?
What is your FOREIGN DEBT?
What is your un-employment rate?
Answer these questions for yourself and you might be surprised at what they may indicate.

And, yes, the US economy is stable enough.
