  • COOOOOOOOOOL!!!

  • Incomparable, preciosa....Ese clarinete¡

  • This is a Mexican song composed by Alberto Dominguez and Mr. Shaw's interpretation is beautiful.

  • This is absolutely fantastic. Shaw was the best

  • I think this is pure magic! What dance is it plse?!

  • June 25th 1944 Leiston, England Plane: N357FG "Frenesi" The silence of the morning was ended abruptly by the revving of the Packard V-1650 Rolls Royce engine. Suddenly my headset was booming with traffic, Frenesi was playing. I forgot the war for a mere second, my dream ended by the sounds of cannon fire. I pulled on the stick and banked hard to the left. My sights found the target, with its metallic wings glistening in the morning sun. I fired. The sky became hell. Frenesi played on.

  • It's one of the best swing songs ever.

  • @iajoe how does this sound like swing to you?

  • @teknokrat1 : This song is from the Swing Era. That era began in 1935.

  • @iajoe sounds like big band, not swing. specifically, it's considered simply jazz according to wikipedia.

  • When I heard this in 1994 I did not like it.Now its of my favorite Artie Shaw songs

  • Artie Shaw rawks. Thanks for posting.

  • Every time i hear this i wish that i lived back then!:-)

  • Lovely.

I can't believe this is 70 years old. Like, as old as Bob Dylan.

  • Artie Shaw plasma con su orquesta todo el encanto y la magia de ese maravilloso "Frenesí" de la autoría del grandioso compositor mexicano Alberto Domínguez !!!!!!

  • @vinyltovideo - didn't say it was my information - it's readily available anywhere. I'm a fan of big bands and have been for most of my life, having grown up in a family that listened to a lot of their music. All I am saying is that Frenesi was in fact, a Latin/Spanish tune, not originally intended for the North American market, although I'm sure Mr. Dominguez was thrilled by it's popularity. My comments about the influence of Artie on more modern clarinetists stands.

  • @vinyltovideo - sorry to say, you're wrong. "Frenesi" is a musical piece originally composed by Alberto Dominguez for the marimba, and adapted as a jazz standard by Leonard Whitcup and others. A hit version recorded by Artie Shaw (with an arrangement by William Grant Still) reached number one on the Billboard pop chart on December 21, 1940 - on RCA. Artie was a true great, influencing Acker Bilk and Pete Fountain - if you listen, you'll hear Artie's style in their music!

  • @misplacedscot Nice copy and pasting skills you got there.

  • I love these tunes with a latin beat!

  • Shaw was just fabulous.

  • what a clear, marvellous record featuring a perennial Swing favorite!

  • Spanish or not, it's marvellous rhythm from yesteryear.

  • it looks like mexicano .

  • the top...

  • Hard to believe, but the recent Mosaic box set claims this recording outsold Artie's "Begin the Beguine." It's definitely got more production values, bigger orchestra, strings, French horns, variety, swing, and another near-perfect Shaw performance. No wonder Ava and Lana married him (and Judy Garland tried). But he walked away from it all in 1954 to a retirement of 50 years! (It's already been 7 years since his passing.) His many bands won't be remembered all that well, but his hits will.

  • Listen to the Grammercy Five numbers with Artie Shaw. They're the best too. Love Frenesi

  • My Dad used to play this song for us, I'll never forget it; absolutely wonderful it was and still is.

  • What label recorded this, please?

  • @looneywoman RCA Victor

  • This was #1 on the Best Sellers chart for 13 weeks in 1940-41. Only a few other records in history have accomplished that feat. (Ben Selvin's "Dardanella" (1920); Gene Austin's "My Blue Heaven" (1927); Glen Miller's "In The Mood" (1939-1940); Harry James' "I've Heard That Song Before" (1943); and the Weavers' "Goodnight Irene" (1950)). Intentionally not including "hits" charted after the 1991 Billboard chart methodology change.

  • How I LOVE this recording. Just heard it from an HBO Miniseries - Mildred Pierce. And a personal connection. I babysat at the Artie Shaw house when I was a teen-ager!!! Don't remember meeting Shaw. thanks a million for giving us this video.

  • To "My Mom taught me...

I am glad for you-and just a little envious, I guess-but in a good way. You see, I lost my mom when I was thirteen, to cancer. I missed out on a lot. I used to feel a little pang when I was at Phu Bai and saw the "care packages" other guys got; but I am glad they got them.

You seem to have a lot of good memories, and I am so glad for you. God bless you and I hope your Mom is resting in peace in heaven.

  • Frenesi.Growing up with three older sisters and the old 331/3.They used to dance me around the living play Artie and this song that I have loved since then. But I always remember the "B" or flip side called Fradiy Cat.That is unless my memory has slipped a cog.So if any of you Artie buffs remember it sure would love to hear it again.

  • Favorite song of Artie's many masterpieces!

  • I've just listed some out of print Artie Shaw and other swing clarinet sheet music on Etsy.

  • I've been looking for this song for many years. I'm overjoyed now that I've finally found it! Thank you so much!

  • Great! One my father turned me on to years ago. The BEST version!

  • uu yea hh oooh what a music

.am I flying wow what a generation

  • It's so surreal. . . how can only 113,250 people heard this song!? This song is worth more !!

  • Artie Shaw is my hero. His music has kept me feeling so alive and somehow understand that life is so beautiful and what music you can make to show it.

His work was truly inspirational and it shall live forever.

  • Artie, you were the best.

  • Who could ever forget this one?...great stuff 'cool man cool'..!!

  • Shaw could make the clarinet talk!!

  • If only I had known the sheer power behind the clarinet, I would have actually applied myself in music class during elementary.

  • Lovely!!!!

  • This is the coolest tune ever, of any genre.

  • Such a sweet tune! Woody Allen featured this in one of his films, as well I think he performs it on clarinet with his band.

  • I have the same LP, but it's a US pressing.

  • Thenk you for posting. I really enjoyed this. Love the big band sound.

  • oh my goodness i love this song! personally, i like this version better than the original by Perez Prado. but thats just me.

  • @sweetness902101209 I like Perez Prado and agree with you that Shaw's is the best of the two, but "original by Perez Prado?" Shaw's version was 1940 -- he was the one who popularized the song in the US, while I believe Prado's version was late 40's or maybe 50s. I don't have the exact date.

  • @stacycentral Of course, this is Shaw's 1956 version. So, Prado's version does precede this one, but comes after Shaw's 1940 version, so that's probably the confusion.

  • Ok, now i am confused, is Roger Williams the original artist or singer.

  • @honeythief No. If you're talking about the pianist he started performing in 1955 and this was recorded before that. And this is also a Spanish song so Shaw isn't either.

  • @VinylToVideo It's actually a Mexican song. Shaw heard it first during a brief "retirement" from the music business, most of which he spent in Mexico. He recorded this version in 1940 after his return to the US. Frenesi was written by Mexican composer Alberto Dominguez, who also wrote Perfidia, in 1939.

  • @VinylToVideo This is not a Spanish song. It is Artie Shaw's song.

  • @kchaney56 It would of been an unknown Spanish song if it weren't for Shaw.

  • Roger Williams?!? Why not Ted? Google the tune. It has a latin composer, but Shaw's could very well be the first performance of it.

  • artie knew how to pick his songs. they were all well wriiten melodies that gave him a a base to turn in to a great arrangement

  • If Benny Goodman was the King of Swing, then Artie Shaw was the King of the Clarinet. How very true!!! Artie Shaw demonstrated how well he played the clarinet and this song purely shows that.

  • @Carl6231 amen to that! Artie Shaw is amazing. I love this randition! this is real music <3

  • Esta era una de las mejores orquestas gringas de los años cuarenta.-

  • Artie Shaw was a genius. If you read his bio info.

  • Artie Shaw entered the year 1941 in the no. 1 position with the original recording of ''Frenesi'' having hit the charts with it in the third week of December 1940. This recording remained on the charts in the no. 1 position for a total of 12 weeks (for the last two weeks of 1940 and the following ten weeks of 1941). Previously in 1940, Glenn Miller had a 12-week no. 1 run with ''In The Mood.''

  • Great song, one of my all-time favorite instrumentals, but the release date was 1941, NOT 1956. I believe it spent 12 or 13 weeks at No. 1 on the early Billboard Popular Music charts. I also do not think Canada was the country of release, either, since Shaw was born in New York City. Still, I could (and have) listen(ed) to this tune for hours.

  • Artie knew how to make a big band song sound sexy and in many cases, I think he was better than Woody Herman!

  • I think that fall to Ray Anthony right now.

  • Artie Shaw was the best!!

  • @njchrissiface Still is!

  • Artie Shaw died 12/30/4

  • Wasn't he the last living big band leader?

  • Well no, there's been many big band leaders, but he would most likely be considered the last band-leader active in "the swing era."

  • @generationll Hi there, I'm not sure how to read the date you have put on here could you put it on in words. Apparently this song was tops the day I was born!!!!!!!

  • my father talked about artie shaw when he was in the army (ww2) i'm a big fan as of this moment!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • 1:25 punch line

  • LOVE IT!!! this makes me smile :)

  • Great sound, is this the mic on your camcorder or did you use an external mic?

  • Actually none at all; it was a direct line connection. Also this is one of my poorest sounding videos as I was experimenting with a new thing YouTube had where the video uploaded as it was being made which for some reason made the sound and video quality far worse.

  • Right on Crystal3241, (:

  • I have this song-sung by Ginny Simms-she even gives the Spanish lyrics a go! This is one of my first 78rpm records:-)

  • Candy for my ears.

  • My mom taught me to dance to this song! Brings back precious memories of her. She's been gone 4 years but I never hear this that I don't remember the fun we had! She was the best. And this is downright "feel good" music! Good for the soul. Boy, do we need more of it in the world today.

  • Well said, and ain't that the truth!!

  • @crystal3241 - similarly, I grew up in a home full of excellent music. I discovered this song in my trumpet-playing father's Time/Life Records "The Swing Era" set. Thank you to VinylToVideo for posting this. Wonderful memories.

  • A wonderful song featuring the great Artie Shaw.

Mexican songwriter Alberto Dominguez composed this, as well as "Perfidia".

  • I had that 78. It was a HUGE hit!! They played it for years.

  • Beautiful

  • palinginal oru maaligai ~ vallavan oruvan 1967. Veda used this tune as a base.

  • Nothing like listening to a record.

Love that little scratch sound in there. Pure joy. It brings back memories of playing all those Readers Digest albums on my parents stereo(I'm 46)

  • I had the SX-9000. The last speaker arrived at our home about 3 days after I returned. Had some great parties back then. No, the system is no longer with me, but the memories are.

  • Awesome...back from Nam...with a new Pioneer stereo system that I saved for...and my Dad...listening to his albums on the new turntable of Glenn Miller, Benny Goodman, Tommy Dorsey, Les Brown, etc. And, of course, his favorite, from New Haven, CT, Artie Shaw. Remembering Frenisi and Stardust....so cool..so awesome...God bless ya, Dad...

  • Which receiver? I have the SX-1080 with matching HPM-100 speakers. Hope you still got it!

  • ahh good song

  • You probably don't like hip -hop, and don't like people sampling that music. I am a hip-hop head so really hope so. Sample based beats from music like this really got soul. So much better then that mainstream thing they call hip-hop today.

Anyway, this is a nice tune!

  • Anyone know if some hip-hop producers has sampled this?

  • God I hope not.

  • @VinylToVideo Hehehe... you crack me up. :)

  • @KongeSize Yes, I believe "Biggie Jerk" tried to sample this but got confused cause he couldn't read music. A a matter of fact he couldn't read at all.

  • Puro SWING.......Bonito para bailar.

  • Absolutely fantastic swing: mellow, dreamy, harmonious.

  • Fantastic sound..... and into my favourites it goes. Thank you for posting. I love it

  • Absolutely adore it! I wish I were around during this time- just for the music. It had such depth- such great orchestration- it was superb! Flawless! Ande to think it was all recorded monorally! Wonderful!

  • Great song!! Of course Woody Allen used this in at least one of his movies. A true classic!!

  • Have been listening to this song since 1994.Like it more then I first heard it.

  • Thanks very much for this one. Excellent!

For more splendid jazz, please feel free to visit my blog (see profile).

    THX again & All best,

    BRUNO LEICHT

  • My god! No one makes music like this anymore!. Thank god I grew up with it and have it in my life!!!

  • WAW!!!!

  • hi every body you know this is a mexican song very old. call frenesi. but artie was a genios because this song is great

  • great sound....

  • FANTASTIC sound!!! Thank you very much!!!

  • This is one of my favorites from Artie Shaw. Such great music.

  • One the best songs I've ever heard. I play the violin and I love jazz. This song is a great hybrid of all instruments. 10/10

  • Phaenomenalical!

  • I love this song. I have to listen to it every morning and night. I know that Jazz isn't what's hot for african americans but I lvoe this.

  • Hah! Ever hear of Louis Armstrong, Duke Ellington, Count Basie or Lionel Hampton?!?

  • Yes. I love it!

  • you forgot the greatest of them all Fats Waller :)

  • How about Roy Eldridge,Erskine Hawkins,Jimmie Lunceford

  • I'm african americans and i love jazz. I was just told the other night that jazz was old folks music. I laughed LOL people just don't know

  • hi! artie shaw's music is great! its nice inspiration when i play on my clarinet and saxophone.

  • This makes me feel less homesick. I remember my Grandma loved this song so much.

    Thank you!

  • Most of this music was before my time.

It was great. T hanks to my Dad I can

appreciate the best. I guess he taught

    me well.

  • I didn't know he had a troubled personal life, it sure didn't show in his playing. The swing era was my parents time so I grew up listening to all those 'old' wonderful tunes.

  • One of the most gifted clarinetists in any genre. Ashame his personal life was such a mess. Benny Goodman was probably his ONLY competition.

  • OMG....This is so great!!!! Love it, love it, love it! Thank you for posting :D

  • Thirteen weeks at Number One. For the Best Sellers chart that was as long as any song ever spent at the top. Others, the Weavers' "Goodnight Irene", Harry James' "I've Heard That Song Before", Glenn Miller's "In The Mood", Gena Austin's "My Blue Heaven", and Ben Selvin's "Dardanella".

(Forget about that post-1991 Billboard methodology, don't even try to compare those "charts" with earlier stuff).

  • I agree great music.

  • This is the best music in the entire World!

    A-we-so-me!

  • Great recording, many thanks.

  • Thank you for your time in doing this.
