btw if you like Star Wars, look at my favorites (George Lucas talks about the influence of samurai movies on Star Wars, Darth Vader vs Japanese Police).
Before Robotech came along this was by far my favorite tech/mecha futuristic cartoon! I dreamed of being like Wild Star a space fighter pilot! This would make a great movie! Bring it back!
there were 5 old movies (in the 70s and/or 80s) and one new movie (in 2009). Also lots of FMV sequences, which had better animation than the 70s versions, from various computer games
@jeffbiggles These were on at 7am before school where I lived. I remember watching it and then talking about it with my friends before school. I loved that show.
omg!!!! yeah!!!! awesome awesome awesome it brings back so many much much memories ur great dude and i loved that song i just love it its just to much awesome 5/5!!!
this is one of the very first futuristic cartoons ive came across w/ back in the 80's..it was aired every 5 pm so i better be home by then to watch it..i was about 7 or 8 back then.now im 34 & just listening to the theme song transforms me back to 1983 as a kid staring at the tv..makes the hair on my nape stand..hehe.good old school anime..
It was the same here in Florida. I'd get up real early to watch it b4 school. I haven't seen this since I like 8 or 9 I too have a soft spot for this show. It was what got me hooked on anime. Great story.
Wow, i love you guys. i never use the internet these days (when I can avoid it; post 9/11). but this is great. i used to watch this shit when i was 3 years old. but in NY it was on at like, 6am or something. maybe i'll start loggin back on more often. (or maybe not). but i got tears in my eyes. thanks to whatever electronic kid put this shit up. you made my day. signing off from china, of all places. go figure.
I used to run home to watch this with my brother, and fight with my sis cause she wanted to watch crappy Flintstones! ^_^ Starblazers is and always will be my FAV anime!
This anime is called "Space battleship YAMATO" originally created by Reiji Matsumoto, a Japanese animator. Yamato was taken from a real battleship that existed and built in WWII to fight with America. No wonder why American changed the original title to the weird name, "Starblazers".
The other thing particular to American vs. Japanese style is that American versions of some Japanese works feature the human characters as the heroes while the Japanese showcase the inanimate hardware as the "stars". Case in point: The American song is about "Starblazers" vs. the original Japanese song singing "Yamato". Also, The Speed Racer theme is all about Speed Racer himself while the Japanese song is about the Mark 5 (his car). I'd be interested other Japanese comment on this.
It was changed because at the time, the late 70s, the execs felt that American audiences wouldn't warm up to Space Battleship Yamato. The change was also due to the Huge success of Star Wars. They wanted to ride that proverbial wave. The great thing about Star Blazers is that unlike many port overs, it did not stray far from it's original form. There are the name changes a a few cut scenes for American censors, but in all, the story remained as deep in it's American form as it was in Japan.
For me the show was on at 7:00am...and my school bus came at 7:15am...i have no clue how many times i hadda walk to school because of that show.(but im sure my mom could name each and every day) LOL...Long live Captain Avatar !!! DIE...Leader Deslok ! (sorry guys i hate him)
I used to watch Starblazers every day after school too. The Yamato is the coolest space ship ever! In Argentina its name was VIAJE A LA ULTIMA GALAXIA ! Tks . Regards
Nicely done. Star Blazers is older than me. I was fortunate enough to have been introduced to it a few years ago. Liked it very much. Loved the Argo. Loved this show. Thanks for posting.
I totally agree with you... I remember running home from school every day just to arrive in time to watch it! I just wish they made a live action movie out of the Iscandar Voyage ;)
A live action show done faithfully can better represent the original series. I doubt either will ever be made, and if it is, will never please the fans;)
My school friend married the voice actress who did the voice of Nova on star blazers she is now Amy Howard Wilson

The battle cruisers in Starcraft featured the Yamato gun. Testament that this cartoon had cultural influence that crossed oceans.

It is sad they changed it yes, but the Argo wasn't random... it was after Jason and the Argonauts...

In Japanese culture, we always held the Battleship Yamato as something special, and alive...
