@alanpro18 Hahah, Hey Man! You should check out the full movie; The Mindscape of Alan Moore. I believe it started as a biopick for a student film and evolved into something much more incredible. It's really not about his work so much as the man himself which was really refreshing. Sure he looks weird, I suppose he is, but awesomely so. If you've read his work (forget the movies based on his work) you'll know Moore is one of the greatest modern writers and truly a living ledgend.
IMHO Neil Gaiman & Alan Moore are the 2 greatest comic book writers of all time -- the 2 who raised the medium to its highest level as an art form. Gaiman is just luckier because (so far) no one has tried to turn "Sandman" into a movie.
His amazing works and sense of creativity aside, this guy is an asshole. The director of the Watchmen said all of the movie is based on the workings of this man's work and that he would really love it if Moore watched it at some point and Alan basically said no,fuck you,my work is better and I'm not stooping to your level and watching your shit.So since that,I find this guy as a person a real piece of shit.He is an amazing author, writer, and cartoonist though
@Vonboon11dy Quoted from an interview in London that he thinks this work is shit and he is notorious for hating anything adapted from his work.I think it's stupid that he won't even watch it and then pass judgement on it,rather then just saying oh it sucks.
@Baird9214 It's his prerogative to not watch an adaptation of his work. Especially as he didn't have any involvement in it (all be it his own decision). He finished his art when he that book was published and signed off on. Maybe in his eyes it was finished and didn't need to be made into a movie... The fact that the movie is shit compared to the novel is a perfect proof of this point.
@raggedbreath I thought the movie was pretty good, even though they left out a shit ton of story and plot points and added some random things, other then that I thought visually it was pretty good and the acting wasn't that bad,but you can't compare the two together
@Baird9214 I'd much rather Alan Moore be like Alan Moore than Alan Moore be like Frank Miller. One is a quiet, considered man who clearly loves and cherishes his work. The other is a right-wing slchock artist who would rather push his totalitarian doctrine than produce thought provoking, challenging literature...
@raggedbreath The two are very different and shouldn't even be compared,Alan Moore has a very clear idea and message he looks to get across, while Frank Miller has a message as well it is usually skewed under the gritty noire setting that most of his novels portray, and visually they aren't even in the same area, like I said they are two completely different people with different art and storytelling forms
@raggedbreath To judge Frank Miller as he is now is to judge Sam Peckinpah when he became alcoholic later in his film career and lost his talent. You have to look at Frank's early work to understand why he is considered a legend in the comic industry equal to Alan Moore.
@mwells219 I entirely agree with you. I suppose I am really just expressing my own opinion regarding who I prefer and who's work I actually like and support. Miller is up there with the comic writers and justifiably so. You can appreciate someones skill and deft writing style without liking or agreeing with their politics (to a degree...).
@Baird9214 They may be very different but if you're going to make great overarching assumptions about Moore being an arsehole then I think I can make great overarching comments on who I prefer... Anyway, he lives near me... so there!
@raggedbreath haha that's cool! And I'm going off of an particular interview where he dogged on the Watchmen movie pretty heavy without seeing it and referred to it as "shit".I love watching movies and such and I know that the people involved with the film put hard work into it and that cold comment just rubbed me the wrong way,but I'm not trying to judge too heavy so if it's his predisposition to not like it I can't make him like it lol so no worries
@Baird9214 That is because Alan Moore was burned by Hollywood very badly with the making of From Hell and doesn't want anything to do with movie adaptions. And also, watchmen is an interesting film but the story really only works in its comic format.
It you guys are still hankering for more Watchmen related stuff, I really encourage you to track down Epic Comics' "The One", it has a very VERY similar feel
WATCHMEN takes on Ditko Objectivism by giving heroes a challenge that test there choice that does not fit black or white conception. Challenge being should millions die to save billions. Wizard Magazine and Image founders just noticed the violence, sex, and cursing; not the deep question does great power corrupt or Who watches the Watchmen?
Alan Moore doesn't like movies of his material because 1.) they are too dense to fit in a 2-3 hour format 2.) Hollywood has a long history of raping his material (From Hell, League of Extraordinary Gentlemen, V for Vendetta, and Watchmen) and 3.) the point of many of his works is too show what graphic novels could do that neither the cinematic or novel medium could accomplish.
@ramonalejandrosuare Watchmen certainly wasn't raped as you say. In fact, I enjoyed it and served as a huge inspiration for me long before the book ever did, which I also really, really love.
@philipmarie1854 I can see why think this having seen the movie before reading book. But only the most superficial reading of that graphic novel would say that the movie was a faithful adaptation of the comic. This is not only opinion but Moore's as well. The reason why is clear: the movie makes artistic and thematic changes to the source material which were counter to Moore's vision.
Watchmen was supposed to be a tribute to the Charlton Comics characters...but Alan just reinvented it to a new level of characters...Hell yeah Alan!!!

Someone said the book was saying the cold war was America's fault. Watchmen wasn't even ABOUT the cold war. The cold war was simply the backdrop. It could have been any similar kind of conflict. It wasn't America vs Russia, or Capitalism vs Communism, it was about humanity, and humanity's simultaneous marvelous and monstrous nature. It was about right and wrong, and how the concepts can be so meaningless, so important, and whether or not there is even a difference.
This reminds me... There's a limited series about superhumans called "Supergod" by Warren Ellis. Its a story of an alternate Cold War where beings of almost god-like power were created as weapons and tools. The series whole premise is that for such beings with abilities beyond human, their own character and personality would be equally beyond human perspective, almost alien, and to expect them to come and save us is to be absurd and naive.
Long story short, this combo was a complete disaster
@Hellblazer344 no, he actually claims its because he made them specifically so that they couldnt be adapted to film, stories that could only be told in the correct level of detail through a graphic novel.
@PuppetsNStuff2 he does but since at the same time he keeps selling the rights to his work after over and over again they dont do it to his likeing and says after he sold the rights to the watchmen he said to the director he wouldnt even try to make it into a movie. i like alan more and respect him as a writer. but dont get paid by someone to kick you in the nuts say you hated it wish it would stop then let someone else pay him to kick him in the nuts and expect a different outcome
@unholychunk That'd be all fine and dandy if he ever expected films of his work to be good, but he doesn't. He's expressly said that he doesn't consider any of his work filmable as it was written expressly for the comic book medium. He's happy for people to try so long as they pay him but he never expects anyone to succeed. and he's right, without fail all the film adaptations of his work have been awful.
@unholychunk Alan Moore is not the sole owner of his works. They are collaborations. He distances himself by simply not having his name attached to them.
@unholychunk Yes, he does not stand in the way of his partners. Moore just says, keep my name out. And who can blame Moore? Only scumbags would want to be associated with crooked slimeball Joel Silver. Joel Silver made up lied about Moore. Moore hates liars. And everybody should hate Joel Silver.
@Hellblazer344 this is wrong, dude. He believes that CINEMA is not superior to COMICS. Each media has its value. So you are basically contradicting that.
@Hellblazer344 no it's because if he wanted to make a movie he'd write a movie script. His comics works are best interpreted in that format as that's how it was intended.
@soberchimera61 While I appreciated the psychological realism and depth of the story, I could never take the whole "Cold War is really America's fault for making peace-loving communists understandably paranoid by our cowboy mentality" concept very seriously, it being just as ridiculous in fiction as it was in fact. However, it didn't really spoil the story for me anyway, as it was just the McGuffin to drive the plot and explain the villain's motivations, etc. Plus, it was alt-history anyway.
@soberchimera61 Your not going to believe this but I also lent my History teach the complication of the comics and haven't gotten it back. Dat 4 years man.
Nice to know I am not the only one like this (though I admit I aint a genius who can make his visionary status PAY the bills.). With LIBYA and other SLAVE GOD tyrant's falling-nice to think we might be entering those fascinating uncharted waters where MAGICK becomes common place (yeah, I know it is, but, in a wider sense.).
@james5591 No,obviously you are though.Your not putting a ? after a sentance.I was heavily drunk when I wrote that previous comment and couldn't tell what he was saying lol.I realised later I was wrong though :)
what he says in the beginning there, i always thought the costumes looked ridiculous (save for Rorschach) despite the intense realism of their personalities and the story. now when he admits that they did look ridiculous and it has a message to show the responsibility/power thing that all people have in one way or another. that tells me it was all very intentional. applause for his insight into that matter
@DrakyGordon Alan Moores run on swampthing is an absolute masterpiece of horror comics, you can buy them in trade paperback form,'the sagas of the swampthing'.The character was a DC character, but the sales were starting to plummet so they got 'Moore in to revive & give a diffirent & brilliant take on the character.there are 6 volumes of Moores run in collected form, vol 1 & 2 are the best IMO,which any Moore fan should put at the top of thier booklist!
I know I'm intelligent enough to know what I agree with and what I don't agree with. Let's leave it at that. There's also such a thing as being the world's dumbest smart person. Just my two cents worth.
wow im sorry but i just thought its just so fucking stupid that there are idiots on this comment list that actually feel the need to bitch about how he looks and makes judgement on it . idc if he isnt the best looking guy im grateful for the work he puts out. this is the reason why this new generation sucks so much cuz you dont care about having a soul in your work (same can be said for music or anything artistic) you just want some fancy bullshit like some justin bieber
Rorschach's Journal. October 12th, 1985: Dog carcass in alley this morning, tire tread on burst stomach. This city is afraid of me. I have seen its true face. The streets are extended gutters and the gutters are full of blood and when the drains finally scab over, all the vermin will drown. The accumulated filth of all their sex and murder will foam up about their waists and all the whores and politicians will look up and shout "Save us!"... and I'll whisper "no."
There was no morality to Ozymandias actions, he just used it as a self-delusion to justify his actions. It was narcissism that really drove him; his drive to be the most influential person in all of history. The book makes that pretty clear, that he was actually just out of his mind.
That movie gave me a really bad taste in my mouth. The moral twist at the end was appalling. The supposedly most intelligent being in the universe make the most stupid decision ever.
@EskolainenKarma If left in your hands, would you, knowing that doing nothing would cost the lives of billions, sacrifice millions? Think about it. The Watchmen ending merely highlights the ambiguity in morality. Yes, the act of killing millions was horrendous, but not doing so would have killed many many more. Think about it.
@EskolainenKarma Who said morality isn't real? Of course its real. Ethics is a fascinating labyrinth of concepts, drawing from a vast range of disciplines. It might not be absolute, but that doesn't mean its relative either.
@BlankVellum Sam Harris speaks of truth as a base for morality. But the deal with the choice made by the characters in watchmen is that they decide that people can't handle the truth. How was the decision was morally right?
@EskolainenKarma He doesn't speak of 'truth' as a basis for morality. He suggests that ethics can be correlated with human happiness, which in turn is objectively related to certain brain states. But if you think that there is no such thing as morality, just ask yourself how you would react if you saw a women getting battery acid thrown in her face simply for not wearing her full burka. Morality is built in to our psychology.
@BlankVellum (if U don't mind me jumping in to the conversation) If I truly believed that not wearing a Full Burka was an act of pure evil, then I might cheer. Another example...can we say that Hitler was pure evil? If he TRULY believed all of the nonsense that he preached about the Jews being vermin, then he would see himself as a hero and feel no guilt in his heart at all. Personally I see Ignorance as the closest thing to Evil. Hitler chose to IGNORE evidence contrary to his beliefs.
@EskolainenKarma In order to understand the moral decisions of some of the characters of watchmen, I would read up on consequentialist ethics, or rule-consequentialism. (the Stanford Encyclopaedia of Philosophy has a great article on this). Utilitarianism also has something to say on this. Basically, the consequences of the decision of the characters was preferable to the consequences had they done nothing.
@BlankVellum "Yes, the act of killing millions was horrendous, but not doing so would have killed many many more"
Thats such a close-minded approach to solving the world's problems. I urge you to think for yourself, instead of allowing yourself to be brainwashed by a misguided idea purported by misinformed cynics...
@shazam679 What are you talking about? Brainwashed by who? I was only providing one particular perspective in the philosophy of ethics, which I thought explained the decisions made in Watchmen. Perhaps you could stop being so presumptuous, then we could have some sort of reasonable discussion. Cheers.
@BlankVellum ok, since you're the type of person who beats around the bush instead of getting straight to the point, I wont bother you with common sense...
@shazam679 What on Earth are you talking about? Seriously? If you want to accuse people of tap dancing, you would be well advised to take your your own words directed back at you.
@EskolainenKarma yeah, I had a feeling it would turn out like that. One of the major reasons why I didn't bother to watch the movie nor the DVD/Blu-Ray package. It's not worth it for me. With all due respect to Zack Snyder of course.
@chrisproxxx Hey Starbucks, mind you're own business you chicken neck jug head. Then again what can anyone expect from an Alan Moore worshiper- pssss. God, how pathetic, freakin' Harry Potter level intellects. Go put you head in the toilet & flush you gag head. Judging from the intelligence of your comments you must love Brittany Spears as well, Shakira too, hm? Wow! What a powerhouse. Pathetic looser.
@pishdad I'm not even going to attempt at an argument with you; judging from that reply, i can immediately tell what kind of person you are. Arrogant, immature, bigoted, and ignorant. Your arguments hold no body, you simply pack your comments full of meaningless insults, in the hopes of hitting a nerve. How did Shakira, Harry Potter, and Starbucks come in to this conversation? You're clearly an illiterate no-life troll who doesn't know what he's talking about and overestimates himself.
@SSTTEEAALLTTHH So you are telling me a nuclear holocaust is not a lie? In the real world I wouldn't have to choose any of the lies. In the real world Rorschach could have told all the truth he wanted because beople have been trained by propaganda like this to fear it. Like there is some justification for the CIA to withhold information from the public. Dr Manhattan could have said: He's just a conspiracy nut. No one would have to be killed to guard some truth, cuz people wouldn't accept it.
If you want a good Watchmen film, go get the animated film, it has every scene of the novel with audio with a few animated movements. But the whole, original story is all there.
Watchmen wasn't that good of a film, V for Vendetta was slightly better. His lacking faith in film adaptations stems from 20+ years of failed attempts. He doesn't like that people aren't approaching these projects seriously, creatively, and respectfully. I agree with him, with a slight disagreement. I have hope, but you have to remember, so does he. Look up his 1985 interviews about Swamp Thing... you will see someone who thinks its possible, and would like to see it.
snyder wanted moores appreciation coz he probly felt he needed the creators blessing.. the studio only wanted credence &support of the fans that his blessing would bring the project (more bucks basically)
regardless the man is a genius &despite his appearance is a more mentally &morally stable human being than the ever disintegrating batman.. i mean miller (genuine error that on retrospect seemed quite appropriately ironic)

@Hellblazer344 no it's because if he wanted to make a movie he'd write a movie script. His comics works are best interpreted in that format as that's how it was intended.

I lent my high school history teacher my copy of Watchmen when we were going over the Cold War, I've graduated and he still hasn't given it back
soberchimera61 10 months ago 83
@soberchimera61 While I appreciated the psychological realism and depth of the story, I could never take the whole "Cold War is really America's fault for making peace-loving communists understandably paranoid by our cowboy mentality" concept very seriously, it being just as ridiculous in fiction as it was in fact. However, it didn't really spoil the story for me anyway, as it was just the McGuffin to drive the plot and explain the villain's motivations, etc. Plus, it was alt-history anyway.

what he says in the beginning there, i always thought the costumes looked ridiculous (save for Rorschach) despite the intense realism of their personalities and the story. now when he admits that they did look ridiculous and it has a message to show the responsibility/power thing that all people have in one way or another. that tells me it was all very intentional. applause for his insight into that matter

EskolainenKarma 1 year ago
@EskolainenKarma Thank goodness that you, the actual most intelligent being in the universe, are here to tell us so.
Jokaanan 1 year ago 27
@EskolainenKarma If left in your hands, would you, knowing that doing nothing would cost the lives of billions, sacrifice millions? Think about it. The Watchmen ending merely highlights the ambiguity in morality. Yes, the act of killing millions was horrendous, but not doing so would have killed many many more. Think about it.
BlankVellum 1 year ago
@BlankVellum Yea, I know morality isn't real. It's lying about it and killing the one who want to tell the truth that is weird.
EskolainenKarma 1 year ago
@EskolainenKarma Who said morality isn't real? Of course its real. Ethics is a fascinating labyrinth of concepts, drawing from a vast range of disciplines. It might not be absolute, but that doesn't mean its relative either.

BlankVellum 1 year ago
@BlankVellum Sam Harris speaks of truth as a base for morality. But the deal with the choice made by the characters in watchmen is that they decide that people can't handle the truth. How was the decision was morally right?
EskolainenKarma 1 year ago
@EskolainenKarma He doesn't speak of 'truth' as a basis for morality. He suggests that ethics can be correlated with human happiness, which in turn is objectively related to certain brain states. But if you think that there is no such thing as morality, just ask yourself how you would react if you saw a women getting battery acid thrown in her face simply for not wearing her full burka. Morality is built in to our psychology.
BlankVellum 1 year ago
@BlankVellum (if U don't mind me jumping in to the conversation) If I truly believed that not wearing a Full Burka was an act of pure evil, then I might cheer. Another example...can we say that Hitler was pure evil? If he TRULY believed all of the nonsense that he preached about the Jews being vermin, then he would see himself as a hero and feel no guilt in his heart at all. Personally I see Ignorance as the closest thing to Evil. Hitler chose to IGNORE evidence contrary to his beliefs.
frankensteinmoneymac 11 months ago
@EskolainenKarma In order to understand the moral decisions of some of the characters of watchmen, I would read up on consequentialist ethics, or rule-consequentialism. (the Stanford Encyclopaedia of Philosophy has a great article on this). Utilitarianism also has something to say on this. Basically, the consequences of the decision of the characters was preferable to the consequences had they done nothing.
BlankVellum 1 year ago
@BlankVellum We don't seem to be talking about the same thing, nevermind.
EskolainenKarma 1 year ago
@EskolainenKarma I would also encourage you to read the literature from philosophy of ethics.

@BlankVellum "Yes, the act of killing millions was horrendous, but not doing so would have killed many many more"
Thats such a close-minded approach to solving the world's problems. I urge you to think for yourself, instead of allowing yourself to be brainwashed by a misguided idea purported by misinformed cynics...
shazam679 1 year ago
@shazam679 What are you talking about? Brainwashed by who? I was only providing one particular perspective in the philosophy of ethics, which I thought explained the decisions made in Watchmen. Perhaps you could stop being so presumptuous, then we could have some sort of reasonable discussion. Cheers.

Malfyre 1 year ago
Watchmen wasn't that good of a film, V for Vendetta was slightly better. His lacking faith in film adaptations stems from 20+ years of failed attempts. He doesn't like that people aren't approaching these projects seriously, creatively, and respectfully. I agree with him, with a slight disagreement. I have hope, but you have to remember, so does he. Look up his 1985 interviews about Swamp Thing... you will see someone who thinks its possible, and would like to see it.
