ummm... you're right about Zuraitis being her late 2nd husband... but this isn't him.. The conductor for this concert was Sergiu Comissiona. There is a bit of a resemblance, though...
For those of you who like her (like I do), there's a terrible Karajan recording with Price - and her. She gives an incredible insight in the craziness of Azucena, her love and dispair. More is not humanely possible.
Out of curuiosity, why you called Karajan's recording terrible? Personally, I found there several very distinctive touches which I liked( like Di Luna's aria). thanks
Because it's too wagnerian. It lacks smoothness even though some parts are extremely dramatic and breathtaking. But in general it's a little too much "on the brass side", technically the recording is horrible - sometimes extremely loud and unbalanced.
Wahrscheinlich eine der zu Unrecht relativ wenig beachteten und viel gescholtenen Sängerinnen, nur, weil sie ein eigenes Timbre hatte. Auch ihre Amneris und vor allem Dalila finde ich umwerfend
All I have to say that this is by far the very best Azucena I have ever heard! I had said to myself Barbieri was probably the best but Obratzova beats the Italian prima donna by far! What an energy she has....she sends chills down your spine!
the last thing I would do is to argue with you.I can see that you have strange ineligible operatic language and it's not obvious just for me!!!however,it's ok,I know enough for Obraztsova and especially for contraltos,I have that kind of voice myself, believe me I know, but my question is:who cares what difficulties did she have???SHE'S THE GREATEST,ONE AND ONLY! and that is all we need to say, isn't it?
hahahah you make me laugh you are an ingnorant that doesnt know what does it means howl in operistic language(this scares me ) !For your information i love obraztsova and for me she is fantastic the best contralto , cause she is a contralto and not mezzo but how can i explain to you this ........ i dont know
Grande la Obraztsova!! la mejor Azucena de todas!! fijense po9r favor que mal que esta la cossotto en esta version de Trovatore... sino pueden verla en youtube, busquelan en dvd...
Verdi - Il Trovatore / Bonisolli, Plowright, Zancanaro, Cossotto, Washington, Giovaninetti, Verona Opera (1985)
si la consiguen, van a ver el papelon que hace Cossotto en ese rol a la casi misma edad de la Obratzsova...
Far better here than in a "Stride" clip I just saw. Interesting too, as that clip was in a production, and here she's just with orchestra. Her interpretation is far more convincing.
When I first heard Obraztsova I thought she did have a deep, powerful mezzo. When I saw her as Santuzza in the "Cavalleria" movie, I think she's a good actress, too. I'd like to get some of her recordings and videos.

This is fabulous.. it is full of drama and real pathos.. She makes this old lady seem believable, and her pain is palpable.. BRAVA ELena.

i agree, who could sing, for instance, Azucena if not Obraztsova? One could feel her pain burning her child
