that is very interesting. i always did wonder what someone would do with their broken katana. even if the sword is broken, respect is still due. and, is it just me, or does the sword carry an air of tenacity and intimidation when it is broken, as such in the video. almost signifies a hard-fighting warrior, if you didn't know the whole backstory of sword versus tree. just my two cents.
and by the way if it is a real sword the metal would be differnent now wouldnt it since it has 27 folds on it which makes it ten times stronger then steel
@gungrave01 dude you really dont have any idea what your talking about. the hanwei practical series swords are not folded. and even then, folded steel is still steel.
dude heat the sword over 5000 o F h and and rejoin the halfs to getter i was a metal cutter abd welder in school it not to hard most people use water to cool the steel but the a bad idea you have to use oil like motor oil so yeah
@gungrave01 Thats a great way to completely ruin the temper. 5000F will also turn that metal into a liquid... Steel melts at 2500F. Once a sword breaks, you cant rejoin it and expect it to be the same quality that it was. If the sword was folded, differentially hardened, or has several laminations, doing this is going to screw it up even more. Sword smithing is quite a bit different from welding.
I have a pretty basic hand forged high carbon steel katana (full tang). I don't think that if I hit a tree with it (not that I ever would) it would snap in half like that.
you obviously don't know anything about swords or metal for that matter. A broken sword CAN NOT be repaired to its previous condition. I could be welded back together but it would look like horse shit. and would not be usable. So yea your right, I wouldn't let someone like you even touch one of my sword, let alone "repair" it.
no and I didnt ask for it ether. at the time he was on leave from the military and had just gotten back from iraq, I hadnt seen him in over a year so when looking at the big picture $180ish sword wasn't that important. my brother and I dont really keep track of who owes who anyway.
most of my life has bin devoted to the blade so just because some one says some thing abut some thing they can only see a weapon that is miles away and not able to hold it you can probably think that they can miss judge some thing about it if you can grasp the concept that some one may know a good blade when they see one
well that design is meant to slice almost any thing and block almost the same thus the many layers and the core is the hardest metal so they can take quite a beating and keep going
sorry to say this, but your wrong on ALL points here.
Katana's were designed to cut through flesh and only flesh.
This sword, as stated is a Hanwei Practical Katana. It is not made of folded steel. and has no layers.
The core is NOT the hardest metal, (with more carbon), is wrapped around softer metal, (with less carbon), so the sword will retain a sharp edge but still be flexible.
One of the guys in my dojo got this rust eraser. It's like an eraser and it seems to do pretty good. I usually oil my weapons once a week due to humidity here.
Well, you could harvest the fittings, make a new nakago on the top half and call it osuriage, and send me the bottom part! XD No, really, though...check out my satsuma-age video. ^_^ You could shorten the tang and make a satsuma-age tanto out of it.
lol j/k. so I'm going to do it. I'll start gathering the supplies. do you know anyone who sells small amounts of same? I could get some from bugei but I dont want to buy the whole ray for one tanto :-/
unfortunately katana's that a broken like this can not be reforged back together, and this is the Hanwei Practical Katana so the the tsuka is epoxied to the tang, which is great for construction on budget swords but bad if one should ever have to remove the blade.
I have a Paul Chen practicle wakizashi that I had to take the tsuka off of (it was destroyed in the process). I cut the maki off and used a slotted screwdriver and mallet to separate the wood. It realy did not bother me in that I intended to put some aftermarket Cheness furniture on it to match Paul Chen Shinto elite blade I had bought in shirasawa. The seppa, tsuba, habaki, menuki & other hardware could be salvaged for future projects.
Yikes! That's intense. I usually don't advocate things like Brasso or Tarnex, but in this case it works. The product I use is Noxon 7, and one of the things I like about it is that it is relatively safe for use on nihonto. So far, though, looks like you and your wife are doing a good job!
Out of curiosity, what are your plans with this sword, now?
if mine broke I'd make a stand that held it perfectly because a broken sword still looks pretty badass

heck, dude, U can make a knife out of the tip half of the katana!! that'd be freaking awesome!!

@ShadowDragoon09 I think you missed my reply lol

to me, a broken sword is still good
ShadowDragoon09 1 year ago
@ShadowDragoon09 I completely agree, I eneded up using the top portion of the blade to make a tanto.

@LukyRemington No it doesnt and your two cents is a load of fuck. It is manufactured sword; no soul.
And this fellow must have an idiotic family for the brother to do that.

sorry but I dont understand your comment.
are you saying there no way for you to know the details of my sword because you can only see a pic/vid?
icyberia 3 years ago
nononono not at all it just looks like a strait break to me and to my knowledge that is more than a 1 in a million long shot
Ibajedi 3 years ago
well this is the only broken katana I've ever seen so I wouldn't know.
why do you think its 1 in a million?
icyberia 3 years ago
well that design is meant to slice almost any thing and block almost the same thus the many layers and the core is the hardest metal so they can take quite a beating and keep going

well Even a the best & worst swords dont simply snap in a clean line
Ibajedi 3 years ago
says who? I told you how this sword broke.
I don't want to sound rude but why are you assuming I'm lying to you?
I told you what happened. I don't understand why you are arguing about this for over a week?

yea I keep good care of my swords usually, but this sword sat neglected for a few years
icyberia 3 years ago
oops...
sorry icecrimson, I accidentally clicked remove instead of reply:-p o well.
icecrimson has made a comment "you shouldve used the upper half and make a tanto instead.."
I still can, bet I think I'll use the bottom half. i think it'll be easier
icyberia 3 years ago
High carbon steel of course, just like all of hanwei's practical sword line.
icyberia 3 years ago
it ether was poorly made or it was a lot older than you thought
Ibajedi 3 years ago
why would you think that? I doubt it was poorly made hanwei always has really high quality control.
and I bought it new in 02 or 03
icyberia 3 years ago
what is the metal it is made of
Ibajedi 3 years ago
how old is that sword?
Ibajedi 3 years ago
I bought it in 2003 so... 6+ years

yea I was thinking about doing that, but its a really good conversation piece the way it is now.
ahhh such a hard decision... I'll eventually decide.

icyberia 3 years ago
I really don't have any. what could really be done with it?
icyberia 3 years ago
If you know a swordsmith you might be able to have it reforged, or order a new blade, come magazines sell blades for DIYers.
Kujo999 3 years ago
