The original idea was control of the means of production by the working class, something which the Soviet Union never provided, as it was headed by a small elite, a small class, of politburo officials. As far as I can tell, socialism and free market capitalism are just themes that similar power structures use to justify their existence, whether its the IMF or CCCP. They both contradict their PR promises.

I don't think a true free market or true socialism has ever existed on any real scale, and I don't believe either concept is as diametrically opposed as cultural programming dictates.

Monopoly in policial or economic power is what corrupts, and the way to stave it off is by decentralizing and having healthy competition.
