  • Props man!!

  • Unbelievably epic

  • I would like to buy this great machine!!!

  • This is truly amazing. Fantastic craftsmanship! So what do you use it for?

  • I just wanted to say I thoroughly enjoyed this video. Very impressive custom build, and I love how you showed all the detail in the fabrication process.

  • hard drives shouldn't be tilted, they will die quickly ;/

  • So much porn

  • What is that for?

  • that will suck when defraging

  • Where do you purchase the SATA wiring/harnesses to power the HDD's? Love your work though. I saw the OS XBOX pro when you first had it up a couple of years ago.

  • Respect...!!!

  • Awesome. Impresionante!

  • im so addicted to your vids @_@

  • wow its awesome

  • talk about being mr ingenuity ... i wish i could do what you just did....

  • @UnknownLobster Hi firstly that is really good job man is the best of all my favorites!! I have one question... wich OS did you installed??

    thanks

  • man, this is such an uber pron machine!

  • Hi i would build the same NAS and my question is how you connect the 8 LED's to the seperat HDD's??

  • @Aussiedler He has said before that the RAID card does it, you just solder LEDs onto the status outputs for each of the drives on the card, not to the drives themselves its all done by the RAID cards inbuilt monitoring of the array.

  • This would make a sweet FreeNAS device

  • Where is the CPU

  • Good build

  • Glue ? On plexiglass ? hahaha... looooooooser !

Next time, go to school before buying hardware.

  • men wooowww quiero ver como correeee ese monstruo

  • How much does it weigh?

  • The very first hover pc :o

  • hey man i really admire your work but i have a question the power of the drives what did you use to power 8 drives are you using a regular power supply because ill be in shock if you could power 8 drives plus the motherboard with just a brick if you know what i mean?

  • @Crimedave1987 I was worried as well. I got the highest power DC-DC 12v adaptor logic supply had - 120watts. I suspected when building I would be cutting it close - Under load it only sucks about 80 watts measured with a kill-a-watt. Been running almost 24/7 for over a year now. Zero problems.

  • @UnknownLobster oh damn thats surprising because you know 7200rpm and R/W heads requires power and x's 8 with a brick made my mouth dropped lol but good job man keep up the work and i message you about my project

  • @UnknownLobster How'd you learn how to do all this :o

  • i set up my new toaster today......

  • thats amazing dude, i could defo have some fun in that w/shop!!

  • Will, in the Newegg video you mentioned about the latching switch to turn HDDs on/off, Can you give more details about it? Can it be used when the system/NAS is running?

  • @FictitiousMe You can go and "dismount" the raid by going into the rocketraid utility, but honestly the main reason it's there is if I want to leave the machine on but am going on a long vacation or something - just to save a little power / hard drive life. The once time I've done it I just rebooted.

  • how long did this take to build? im guessing 3-5 weeks...

  • hey Will does this box run as a NAS or what? I'm really intrigued and would like a NAS but if this performs better than a NAS maybe i will build one. Btw what was the total cost and time (relative)?

  • Were the two smaller drives 5v? If so, how did you get it to work, because usually computer drives are 12v.

  • the film making in this video is what really was the metaphorical icing on the cake it seemed so well done it made it that little bit more interesting

p.s how much did this cost?

  • Measure twice, cut once.

  • @1JOeMTC are you from clark?

  • want to learn how to do this? finish school and study!

  • awesome! at next you should store a mainframe inside a shebox xD

  • i would like to see u mod other stuff then just computer cases like psp ds ps3 and old systems

  • Hell yeah!

  • Im so envious of you. Firstly you have an amazing home workshop thats to die for. Secondly, your a greatly talented engineer and thirdly just to top things off your a really talented film maker as well. Thats just too much talent for one person, share some of that.

    Love your videos.

  • What are you doing for a PSU tho? And does it fit in the case as well?

  • @KillerXtreme88 theres an external power brick like a laptop i think.

  • great build, great cinematography and great music

  • Comment removed

  • what software / Hardware do you used to control the Hard-Drives aktivity LED's ?

  • I wish I had yout patience, on the min 3 of the fisrt video i would alredy given up. XD

  • Holy smokes, man! That's really awesome :)

  • TUTORIAL ?

  • I am glad you did not show how long it took to initialize raid 5. I have a 2680 with 8 of those drives and right now it says I have 84 hours left...

  • Can someone get this guy a show or something on G4!?!?! It could be like the "powerblock" but for nerds :)!!!

  • 6 people still use a 40Gb HDD and have 30Gb free space

  • how did you pay for a those machines?

  • Total cost ?

  • psssssshhhh who needs guards for table saws

  • your either really good at making clean welds or really good at cleaning up bad ones lol

  • Great projekt!

It looks cool but with LEDs or some other backlight inside it would look kickass

  • You are both Barking Mad and F...ing Brilliant!!!

    Great Casesmithing!!!

  • You, sir, are a genius.

This is coming from someone with OCN's worklog forum and their homepage.

  • I understand ...

another question ... Why did you use a hd 2.5 + ssd ...

    thanks..great job

  • hey Will have you had any problems with running that many hard drives so close together for a 24 hr comp?

  • @bladedush Nope, everything has been running great and temps are just fine.

  • cool

  • Its always amazing when you merge certain skill sets. The awesomeness that can come from them.

  • hi...sorry,i dont speak english very well.

    (I'm using the google translator..hehehe)

I was wondering where you connected the sata plugs on intel motherboard , because you have eight hds and I saw only three SATA connector

  • @Mrbozolandia You can see in part one I unbox a highpoint raid card. It's the small board in the pci-e x1 slot with 2x SAS ports.

  • you my friend... are insanly genious.... in standing in awe...

and by the way... i want one of thoze...

  • very very nice video, beautifully edited! And the end result is impressive!

  • I know ill catch hell for this but i like your videos better than monster mods cause you use tools to build these bad ass machines and monster mods are always cnc made parts. awesome stuff man!

  • Very very hot seen!! I was impressed with his dedication and whim.....

I'm from Brazil, Brasilia DF......everything good....

  • Isnt it bad for the harddrives working at that angle?

  • Could you do a spiecal dwarf and i could buy it or do you just do this for fun?

  • you are THE MASTER!!

  • Put that man on the A-team. I don't mean the gay movie remake. I mean the original A-team! All that memory will be obsolete in about 3 years or less! Awesome video!

  • That looks so fucking sexxy. You should make another one and give it away. And for just giving you the idea u should give me 2

  • Brilliant build man! Wish i had a shop like you.... makes a world of differance for a nice custom build. Awesome Job!

  • would you ever consider building a similar (but smaller) version of this case if you were paid for the materials and the hours required?

  • the best video on youtube

  • So have you considered the fact that you are the son of god, or god himself?

  • amazing vid..

cant describe how good it is..

You are pro at mechanis, electric, movie editing..

    5*

  • I never quite know how to respond to these videos, they just leave me completely speechless. This is the kind of workmanship and attention to detail that would make NASA blush!

  • 16TB of memory? that's a lot on porn.

  • how did you bend the lexan?

  • @bobbysam232 What's cool about Lexan is you don't need any heat to bend it. I used a little metal break which you will likely need for material this thick, but it's pretty much just brute force to shape it.

  • @UnknownLobster

    Cool... I bet I can't Lol I have 1/4" polycarbonate

And I weigh 90 pounds.. o.o even If I had my whole body on that I bet I couldn't add some heat gunning to that... makes it much easier e.e I think.. I always had my dad do that. :P

  • So what you use this as like a store age server or somthing? ANd just amazing :).

  • @liamgreen94 Yes, Pretty much a storage server, Check the "related videos" section for "Newegg Guest - Will's Black Dwarf Build." I did a video talking about what its for for Newegg's channel.

  • im speachless, love ya work!! and song name?

  • @BaKeR12ReP Music credits are in info section and on the end of the vid.

  • @BaKeR12ReP I want to know it too :)

  • @UnknownLobster: I can't find any information about the mini DC-DC psu for the 8 3.5" hdds. It is also missing from the specifications list on the website. The only think I see is the picture on your website (psu.jpg). I also asked Logic Supply but they said they don't know/sell it.

For the rest these videos really are a masterpiece. An interesting mix in electronics, computers and mechanical engineering makes watching these videos really worth my time.

  • @SPFAR Hi, thanks. Its a 120w dc-dc psu made by serener. I got it from logic supply, they use to carry it but seem not to anymore. Google serener 120w and you'll find it.

  • All i can say is wow , I googled some NAS i was looking at on Ebay , and a pic of yours popped up, my first thought was "were can i buy one" then i saw a blog and said wow he built this him self. A+ job man , great photography btw.

  • AMAZING TOOLS AND STUFF HI5 COOL

  • This just takes modding to a different level - this sir is pure creation! Unbelievable stuff.

  • long day

  • So black dwarf, are we talking about Garry Coleman or no?

  • Omg i dont know what i would do with 14002.19 GB

  • You're too much. I only wish I had that ability. Great job.

  • @darkgamerdave Thats a mini DC-DC psu for the 8 3.5" hdds. More details available on my website.

  • Black Dwarf would be my dream storage. And excellent video shooting and editing btw, bravo~

  • hail to you champion

  • Chuck norris aint got nothing on this guy.

  • 14 TERABYTES?!?!?!?!!?!

  • @CoDMWinsider Your math astounds me. Its 8x2TB+320GB+30GB so all up 16.35TB.

  • @josburr oh lol i wasn't paying attention buy that's a lot!

  • I've been watching your video since the beginning . I'm your fan!!!!!

  • Comment removed

  • cool! i wish i can do that!

  • I wish real life had awesome time lapses whenever things would get boring

  • It is AMAZING how you create something so awesome from practically nothing just by yourself. Great work!

  • i've built some respected mods on overclockers au but hat off i believe you are the worlds premier builder, only just found you on the hackaday front page , grats.

Two things, I am totally amazed at that power supply, could you possibly tell me where you get the sata power connectors they make any mod look much cleaner.

  • @colwyn25 Thanks! I buy those power connectors in the form of molex to sata power adapters, and then take the actual connectors apart and use them as I please. You pretty much have to look at the picture where your trying to buy them and make sure they're the 90 degree / inline type.

  • @UnknownLobster i agree with many poeople here... when i say, bravo... great job man. your work is very spirited an proffesional... very thing was meticulously thought out... and i love your machine shop... proper tooling is key here... im almost jelaous...

im an automotive tech, and my hats off to you as well. its very hard to work and film with great angles like that...great job once again... i like you style with the vw in the back... flat engines is where its at

  • Nice work,

what OS did you use ?

  • this is amazing. awesome work

  • Awesome videos and rly cool end product!

  • GAT Damn! That's some serious footage and editing! You should win some kind of award or something! Awesome work dude.

  • i love you vids currently im building my own gaming computer

  • Epic stumble, i tip my hat good sir, impressive job, the whole 8 minutes were like watching pron, but with better music and better video editing, great project.

  • OK, now you made me very jealous!...

this is an insane project with perfect video editing!

mister, YOU ARE A PRO!, you're better than monstermawd!

  • Does it really fit in a shoebox?????

Kidding, amazing job! I want one of those :P

  • It would of been a lot cooler if the part used cover the exposed hard drives were wire mesh :) but still friggen awesome

  • this is so cool!!!

  • dude i want to spend just a week with you to learn how to be that fucking amazing

  • how long did it take you and, how much?

  • @darkless60 Along with the video about 100 hours. Cost of the components was around $2000.

  • Das ist cool

  • Very good job

  • All that spinning is making me dizzy

  • You must watch a lot of porno

  • oh ok, so you atleast didn't used the same drives, good boy. But seriously, what's up with the rotary table? Did you want it to fall off your work bench?

  • Ultra high skill !

  • I wonder what you will do when memristors hit the main market? Petabytes for pennies. I guess you could make your own universe.

  • That looks so sexy

  • Your craftsmanship is awesome ! You've got some talent :) .

  • great video!!!

  • Where do you get your SATA connectors at 6:30?

  • @kylecates2 I buy them in the form of molex to sata adapters. You pretty much have to look at the picture of the item your buying to make sure its the correct 90 degree inline type.

  • @UnknownLobster Oh, so your sayin' you just buy the adapters and take them apart and then space them out how you like?

  • @kylecates2 Well not just space them out, i usually just throw away the molex part along with the wire that comes with it and just use the actual connectors.

  • That's really impressive, must be one of the sleekest disk-hog builds I've ever seen :)

  • WOW yo that the best metal work i ever seen for pc case i love it lol i wish i had a bench table nicely made lik that small but very useful that fold out welding rack is wicked sic yo

  • Hi Will, love this so much that I'm contemplating making one for myself. Just not sure how you powered the hard drives from the psu as you use a 5 wire power and not the 4 wire plugs that I can only seem to find. Any advice would be greatly appreciated. Thanx

  • @turnz426 I've never been clear on that 5th orange wire for hdd's, but u certainly don't need them. I just put it in for the hell of it.

  • After being inspired by your Cinematograph HD, I built a case very similar, just without the 2ND TFT, I run dual 22" but ran out of time to complete the frame for the 2ND monitor. I was very cautious about debris and shards around my hardware. Did you not have any issues with dead HDD's? Surely there would of been a short, after seeing all those sparks hit the hardware? I see you used a load of WD greens (I have a 1TB, fantastic disk) did you kill any of your hardware?

  • @MrMe01 I'm always careful around working computer hardware and have yet to loose something during production. Those were dead drives in the beginning obviously.

  • @UnknownLobster mr me obviously didnt know even after the different size clues

  • Why would you run the drives at that awkward angle...

  • awesomeness!!!!at its finest!thumbs up!

  • amazing!

  • awesome project, awesome case, awesome editing

  • very nice well done

    what is the cpu?

  • i love watching this. and i can watch tons more like it as possible...makes me want to do something hardware wise, if i was so skilled, which i am not.

  • What temperatures are you getting on the disks? Especially under load?

  • @freeculture that's a good question. seeing them staked so closely together made me wonder that as well. there's barely any room between them

  • as many terybytes possible would be 2tb drives not just 1tb

  • You impress the shit out of me! You got mad patience and make some awesome stuff. You think like a true genius!

  • This is such a great idea! I am an video editor as well and I can definitely see the use in having a mass storage solution like this. I work primary with FCP so I would need this to be a hackintosh, but wow! great concept and execution!

  • tpw?

  • your the king!

  • i honestly can say i am a hell of a lot more jealous of the shop you had than your new computer

  • What were the drives in the beginning?

How much planning do you usually do?

  • dude your like the realistic tony stark

  • you should get your own TV show were you build cases

  • and agree, I love your car too, pictures or video please :)

  • I hope to see more of your videos man, you're going up in the industry for sure :)

  • I love you'r car lol!

  • how did you connect the LED's to each of the HDD's????

im planning to build a server soon and i was wondering how you did it

(old PC's from your parents' jobs are awesome!)
