@Zurab melua it wasn't his choice to trigger. He hated having to use samples. The drum sound images wasn't his choice either. He and Jp got TRUE creative freedom on Scenes and on. That's when the drum sound got amazing and STAYED AMAZING!
@progrhythmical are you kidding me? the drum sound they had on images and words is the best drum sound they ever had. the whole production on that album is amazing. i wish they could return to that sound
@holydiver7190 it's triggers. they suck, even tho Images & Words is a bible of Prog Metal 90s. David Prater was producer and he did only commercial sounding artists so he insisted to use triggers. Mike was very mad on him so they recorded Awake with Purdell in LA (RIP), but Atlantic wanted more hits like Pull Me Under and they recorded A Change Of Seasons with Prater again but this time without triggers and compressing. Mike was pissed again coz Prater cut lots of original too :)
I do not believe in God, but Mike Portnoy was meant to play drums, and I am happy he does so :D - Actually, I just love those guys. Make me another album!! Pronto. And do it Octavarium style! :D Like their music or not -- to say that those guys lack some kind of particular musical skill is ignorant. They are far beyond most ppl in the commanding of their instruments. And I also want to state that I really liked Kevin Moore, and I really like Jordan Rudess. Can't say nothing bad about DT.
I never knew any video footage of the I&W sessions existed! It's really weird and interesting to hear Mike's drumming as it actually sounded in the studio, rather than David Prater's triggered atrocity that we hear on the album. And despite the low sound quality of this video, this pretty much destroys Prater's claim that the triggering was necessary because Mike couldn't play consistent downbeats on the snare.
@VincentVangoria Nah, in the book Lifting Shadows, Prater directly addresses Portnoy, telling him that his snare "sounded like faeces" and that it was "virtually impossible to get [his] snare to maintain a consistent prominence without having to constantly ride the fader level." He also calls Portnoy's drumming "cluttered".
So although the quality of this video isn't brilliant, I think it shows that Prater's comments amount to nothing more than arrogance and jealousy.
the fill at 1:04 is a really cool syncapation.... The only thing that sucked about this album was the horrible triggered snare, it had waaaay to much attack...
Wow, this video captures a piece of the defining moment for Dream Theater, and modern music history. Images and Words is still my favorite album, even after 9 more albums that followed. There is an extremely magical feeling to the music and the time. The following album, Awake was nearly the same in writing style and musical feel.
Yeah, Kevin Moore enhanced the mood of the music and gave the band more of an art-rock sound rather than the newer progressive-metal sound. I like the newer sound and writing but the artistic creativeness has been lost to super heavy insanely complex long songs, that also make DT the technical musical gods!
I agree... Images and words is the best album ever, but I know that Jordan Rudess isn't the only reason they changed. Both Jordan and JP is doing those endless fast solos, they both changed their music. But if you see beyond those solos, Jordan really knows how to make their music epic. Like the end of The count of tuscany, lyrics aint good.. but the music is the most epic 5 minutes dream theater have produced since scenes from a memory imo :)
LOL when they play the circus-themed thingy at about 2:00, that's ironically what they play at the end of their 1987 tape of "A Fortune in Lies" with Dominici
When they played this (Learning to Live) on the SFAM DVD it was such a special...what am I saying...that whole DVD was a special. BTW love the spontaneous jam at the end...
When kevin moore left the band, they did auditions for new keyboard players. Jordan took the place, but only for a short period of time and a very few shows! Then he left and derek sherinian was hired till 1998, when jordan rejoined the band (see the score XX documentary for more info)
After Kevin moore left DT wanted Jordan to join the band but he was busy with his own band So they had to hire Derek After the Liquid Tension Experiment Jordan agreed joined the band I think.
Yes, i think that it was the other drumset that he had thru the late teenyears that hes granma bought for him. This set he worked in many jobs, such as chinese-food-dilevery-boy to get. You can read this on hes web.
Th trigged snare kinda destroyed a musically part on Images and words, for me. The drumsound overall is not so good either. I know that DT doesn´t have anything to do with the sound. One of my favoritemixings is Awake. So different.
A trigger is when you hit something, and it 'triggers' another sound, like an electronic drum kit would. So if mike has one set up on his snare, when he hits the snare it triggers an electronic sound, which is why all the snare hits on that album sound the same
Not quite. Basically, they take a recorded sample and every time the piece with that trigger is hit, rather than the actual sound being recorded, it puts that sample on the recording at that time stamp.
You need to read the Lifting Shadows book that came out last year. Mike did his fair share of drugs (something he'll readily admit). I don't think any of the other guys did (at least not with any sort of regularity).
That's a good point. I also heard that he spent all of his money on the rest of the kit, and was left with a crappy snare so he had to trigger it as it was really poor.. Sounds good enough here though
it's the same kit mike uses for awake, he also used it to record some tracks from falling to infinity, this kit is also the same he used throughout his berkley's days and majesty days as well!!!!!, his grandma actually bought this kit for him, he still has it in his basement
i have this DVD :-P :)
