  • lol klessik. Nice remake !

  • hey thats w valley

  • Great Video!

So it isn't just graduate students that go all the way to the summit after all! ;)

  • Tim and Kelly made an appearance in the new "Mauna Kea Holiday Medley" video by cmcwhat.

  • Kelly contributed to the soundtrack of the new "Hubble Vision (Foreigner parody)" video.

  • Wonderful! Fabulous!

    Keep playing please!!

  • Very cool video. I like the waipio valley beach section added too.

  • It looks like you folk on the professional side of the aisle (Isle?) are a fun bunch.

    Best regards,

    Francis J. O'Reilly

(A frustrated astronomer and amateur telescope maker)

  • Great video! That was a nasty loking flat tire, how did you manage that?

  • A combination of being unaware of the problem while on the dirt road, and then convincing ourselves while on the pavement that the tires sounded in need of balancing and rotation! We will try to catch it sooner next time :)

  • AWESOME, BABY!!! You know, Kelly, your talent to take composed songs and create your own lyrics and see if it suits the rhythm is quite amazingly wonderful like sunbeams and rainbows!

  • Thank you so much, but although I am the singer, I am just the co-lyricist. All co-Investigators had a hand in the lyrics during an amazing moment of inspiration while on a break from observing. We are so pleased that others enjoy the lyrics as well!

    ~Kelly

  • Kelly, this is awesome.

    --Logan

  • Hi, I've some hard time with film editing for Kelly's interview, sorry for this, ..., thanks for your patience :-o

  • Looking forward to Dr Kelly Fast's interview ...

  • WONDERFUL - Thanks for that piece of fun.

  • This is absolutely crazy, can't believe it, we just got an interview of Kelly, yeeeeeees !!! We know you are so busy and refuse, absolutely, all the interviews. How lucky we are! On behalf of all the thousands of people of your french fan club of Paris Observatory, mahalo nui loa Kelly. Pierre :-))

Note for the all the fans: we are all here working hard in getting the authorizations of our beloved Mauna Kea star to publish the video of that incredible interview ;-)

  • That was quite a surprise! You were all so kind! It was a pleasure meeting you! ~Kelly

  • this is awesome!! i love it!!!!

  • My professor showed me this video in Astronomy class...I love it.

  • Wow, what an honor to be part of the curriculum!

    ~Kelly

  • Never stole food, but hot drinks, quite a few! Feels like nice old time :-)

  • Hahaha never stole food but hot drinks, quite a few... Awesome jobs with the music guys ^^

  • That was awesome! It really makes me miss the long long long nights at the IRTF. x_x Did you ever steal food from the CFHT's kitchen?

  • Nice video and nice song. But remember, you can check out of spacetime any time you like, but you can never leave.

  • This is really a cool song, I enjoyed it, thanks.

  • We have checked with folks here at Mauna Kea. The most correct naming is "Mauna a Wakea", pronounced MOW-nuh (rhymes with now-nuh) ah vah-kay-uh, which means "mountain of Wakea, the sky-father." The casual usage is the modern Mauna Kea, pronounced "MOW-nah Kay-ah." We have our pronunciation advice from the visitor center, from rangers, and on best authority from Kimo from the 'Imiloa Astronomy Center.

  • Hi! (You know it's me).

I've already told you I like the video, but I haven't posted any comments.

We all miss you now that you're back in Hawaii!

    (Moh-ah-na Kee-ah?!)

  • Sorry.... please tell me where MOWNA KAYA is?? If my memory serves correctly the proper pronounciation of that mountain is Moana Kea (moh ah na kee ah). But Michael Pirahna has a better paradoy called Hotel Honolulu.

  • ScienceTim here. Thanks! I wondered how to say it right. I feel stuck with saying it Mah-oo-nuh Kay-uh, since people seem to understand me when I say it that way. Now I can say it properly in my head and feel superior.

Give us a link for Hotel Honolulu. I found a hotel advertisement of that name with tanned bodies in swimsuits. Appealing, but not the same territory.

  • ScienceTim again. We had a second comment from Paahau, who apparently did not take kindly to the intended joking in my response to antman252. We're trying to avoid obscenities here, which is why I am not approving Paahau's comment to be posted. Say it clean, even if non-complimenatry, and it will stay.

I will ask my Hawaiian cultural contacts the correct pronunciation when I am there in a week. Will we accept that it's an authoritative pronunciation if it's from native Hawaiians?

  • very good! nice parody!

  • She pronounces mauna wrong. But other than that, this was great.

  • ScienceTim here. I admit, we're saying it the haole way. What can I say? We're haoles. We know it. We admit it. It's our burden to bear.

  • When I was in the army(1980) I did a stint at PTA(Pohakaloa Traing Area)2 buddies and I climbed to the top and descended down Pohakaloa gulch.(difficult it was).We were given freah water at the observatory. The images brought back some memories thanks

  • Wonderful just wonderful!!! Nice to see that spirit of fun and science. Got to go do one more tweak before the song ends. Clear skies

    BT

  • That's absolutely perfect. I have no words.

I'm just wondering why we didn't come up with such an idea at our observatory? OK, just kidding. Today's gonna be cloudy. Let's reduce some spectra instead...

  • Incredible. I have to musical talent, but I am getting my lab group together to do some brainstorming... you give scientists a good name! Thanks and I look forward to more...

    -MD

  • Love it!

It made me laugh and I've got the giggles now :D

    Rosanella

    :-)

  • Fabulous! Read about the video in Science and didn't expect much - I'm happy to be surprised. I wonder - have you gotten many calls from agents, yet? ;-)

  • Delightful video. Astronomy is my hobby and I've noticed every Star Party has a few guitars playing. Music fills in the time waiting for a clear night sky.

  • As a geologist / climatologist by training, an electrical engineer by career, an amateur astronomer by choice ot to mention a musician I love it!!! (So did my 13 year old daughter)

Fun lyrics, Nice guitar and the singing was also fine. Hope to see more.

  • Oh my poor poor girly! I'll pray 4 U in cloudy nights!

    ROFL

    Very nice made!

    Greetings from Germany! =D

  • Y'know, we're not all girls/women.

    - Tim

  • Oh - I apologize... =)

    clear skies!

  • What was the purpose of the experiment? What was the tweak? More details please.

  • Multiple purposes. This time, all related to measuring the composition of the atmosphere of Mars. The emission line is real, and is due to physical conditions in the highest part of the upper atmosphere. The "dip" also is real, and is due to a minority oxygen isotope in atmospheric CO2. The tweak is a tradition. There must always be tweaks. There must always be more tweaks. Perfection is only just out of reach. Just one more tweak.

    - Tim

  • Thanks for the helpful technical background. The line looked real but I would not have bet on the dip. But my background is in H-II regions, far from Mars. This is a golden age for astrophysics.

    Terry

  • Exellent! Very nice vocals (for a scientist)...OK OK, just kidding...nice vocals period. And excellent guitars and arrangement. Do Eagles fly that high? They'd be proud.

McCarney/Lennon "A Day in the Life" next??

Cheers from an AZ amateur astronomer.

  • "Do Eagles fly that high?"

No, I don't think so. I'm going to guess about 9-10 thousand feet, maximum altitude above sea-level. Mauna Kea is at 13.788 kilo-feet.

  • Wow 13788ft = 0.0000000281 a.u. which is perty darn high...And my hunch is that Don Henley, Glenn Frey, and Joe Walsh are no strangers to flying high. And they'd probably get a kick out of your video, too.

  • Great Video, strong message. We feel your pain :0

  • Beautyful!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • Every middle and high school science teacher needs to show this to their students. What a great way to show the human side of scientists. It's great to see the science aspect too as most students would never have the opportunity to see the inner workings at observatories. Thanks!

  • Read about the clip in Science. I enjoy showing my young daughter women having fun in science!

  • That was very funny, well done!

  • Brilliant! Thanx for this hillarious post, and beautiful instrumental work as well!

  • Great video. hilarious! strong vocals! loved it.

  • Congratulations, astronomers!

Hope this video will inspire many more YouTube contributions from "science people" (deep salt-mine laborers). Exceptional scenery, great guitar, not a bad voice. You need a much better director/editor. Don't be afraid to put more science in: after all who do you think is going to watch videos like this?

  • Relatives of people working there and relatives of relatives of people working there and friends of relatives of relatives working there. LOL!

I think people who like parody music (called FILK) will really get a kick out of this too. It's really well done. Filk might be a good tag to add.

  • Nice guitar work Juan!!!!

  • Definitely my favourite video so far; excellent voice, great lyrics, fantastic images. Can relate to the altitude headache and altitude-induced sleep deprivation even though I've never been in that specific place. Thank you!

  • Very cool video. Seems to be a beautiful place. Oh, and very nice voice!!

  • Probably the best video on YouTube !!!

  • A wonderful parody of a music video, that manages to be hilarious while capturing the true essence of what it is like to work as an astronomer at Mauna Kea Observatory. Thank you!

  • Sooo true!! Describes exactly what it feels like working up there - and you've done an amazing job with the video and especially performing that song. Thanks!

  • haha great!!!!! Still can't wait to go there someday... :P

  • Great work! You made me feel really nostalgic for my work dreamplace, La Silla Observatory, in northern Chile.

  • Was there last year as a tourist- like being there all over again.

  • great!! you really captured the essence, the stress, the joy, the beauty of working on Mauna Kea. Excellent job!

  • I've been observing on the dusty bump for 27 years--you've captured it all in a few minutes. Great job!

  • MARVELOUS!

This brings back wonderful memories of the 3 nights I spent as part of an observing team with Heidi Hammel in 2003. I was researching my middle-grade biography "Beyond Jupiter: The Story of Planetary Astronomer Heidi Hammel."

I have a description of that book and a picture diary of my IRTF/Big Island experiences at fredbortz-dot-com-slash-HammelBio

  • Excellent video! It brings back all the great memories of observing while keeping in mind to be prepared just in case something goes wrong.

  • Excelente video. Estamos muy orgullosos de verlos desde Colombia. Excellent video. We are so proud to see you from Colombia. Congratulations

  • A delightfully geeky travelogue! Now I know why the rental car companies won't let you drive up there, and it has nothing to do with the road!

  • excellente video, c'est exactement ce que l'on vit au sommet, merci et bravo ! **** excellent video, this is perfectly true, exactly what we experience at the summit. mahalo and congratulations !

  • oh man..this brings back both fond memories and nightmares....great job!

  • gorge garcía yus, from Gemini; says HI

  • Well done. Excellent guitar, beautiful voice.

  • seeing this was a fantastic way to start the day! you really captured the joy, frustration, and chaos of observing!

  • Fantastic! It's all so true...

  • Awesome parody!

  • Excellent work!!!! We have all been there, but few have expressed it so well :)

  • I've experienced observing runs that could have inspired such music as well. Great job.

  • Great job guys, really enjoyed it. :)

  • Great stuff! Keep on photo-mixing!

  • Great video by astronomers using the telescope on Mauna Kea.

  • Mahalos for the great content! This video is now playing on Hawaii Pictures (dot) com. Check the chat room on the bottom of the home page and feel free to embed it on your blog or site.

  • Great video! Scientists really are a hoot.

  • Fantastic! Great music and a funny video.

  • This needs to be a featured video. Loved, loved, loved it!
