  • what's the music? It's been stuck in my head for 15 years.

  • terrible commercial

  • I got the Nights - Journey of Dreams game for my Wii. I play it with a Gamecube controller.

  • I bought this (and the analogue pad) with my Saturn back in the day.

Well, actually my Gran did - it cost her about £450. I was only 11 years old; my Saturday job didn't quite cover the cost ;p

    Anyway, cracking game!

  • There are some inconsistencies with Sega's propaganda message. While the Saturn was a sophisticated piece of hardware for it's time and could display 3-D objects very well, it wasn't meant to be a true 3-D platform. It was meant to be a more highly advanced 2-D gaming system and therefore, making fully 3-D games was not easy. Nights here is a perfect example. The game has a 3-D world, but mostly plays like a 2-D game. Yuji Naka even admitted this during the development of Nights.

  • @JonErich what you say is pretty much true, but when they say the Saturn was better at 2D than 3D, they are pretty much talking about graphics. The fact that Nights had 2D gameplay was a design decision because in an early version of the game, free flyng in a 3D world turned out to be pretty hard and frustrating to play. (see Superman 64 for a good example of how crappy it might have been)

  • yeah... SEGA!!!

  • the PS was an ugly system compared to the Saturn with it's classy glossy and textures skin

  • This game and this add were one of the reasons why I wanted a Saturn so badly for Christmas that year as a kid. I loved the console and all, but unfortunately I (along with many other Saturn owners) ended up gettings screwed royally as the system ended up dying just over a year later. I too was a die-hard Sega loyalist, but Sega abandoning the Saturn the way they did was the last straw for me. Thank you Bernie "jerkoff" Stollar!"

  • FLY PLAYTHING FLY

  • what did that have to do with Nights all I know is that you fly

  • this sony bashing is instant win. god I know why I'm a sega loyalist _O_

the line: "especially not on that other system" is epic!

  • I am a SEGA loyalist and I always will be...

I'm happy that there are many who agree that the newer people just aren't SEGA....

I feel bad that SEGA fired about half of the crew that worked on some of it's better games... the art director from the PS series got canned, as did the original concept artist for the SA series...

  • I remember when this ad came out, I was like "TAKE THAT SONY!" Then I bought a sony a month later :P

I was such a Sega loyalist, until I played a demo of FF7 at a kiosk in Blockbuster, I was like "I have to have this". Then I dropped my loyalty and went with the Playstation. I used to have the Sega Genesis, and the Sega CD. Was about to get the Sega 32x, but heard about the Saturn.

But anyways, I'm glad I made my decision :)

  • yeah that was the problem with 32X because Saturn was coming and it was THOUGHT to be a success, but it was like me waiting for a chance to play Sonic next gen. I thought it would be good, but it sucked balls

  • The Saturn could've competed well in the market against the PS and the N64. They had the marketing and the 3rd party support (in the beginning) to do so! Unfortunately Bernie Stollar being brought in as new president of SOA is what led to the Saturn being abandoned. He publicly came out and said that the Saturn was history and that SOA was completely focusin their attention on developing their next console (Dreamcast).

  • "There's never been a game like Sega Saturn's Nights. Never been a game that's a allowed you to fly fluent and free in real-time 3D. Never, not anywhere. But especially not on that other system. Simply because with only one processor, it doesn't have the power to do it. Fly, plaything, fly. You're not ready."

  • I thought that blob would splatter against the screen, but no.

  • Wow. No wonder why NiGHTS sold poorly in the US. This commercial is creepy. I mean I like it. I like how it bashes Sony, but the dark tone gave a bad rep to NiGHTS

  • Every commercial in the mid '90s was like this, especially during Nintendo "PLAY IT LOUD!" marketing campaign of the era. It was all dark, drab graphics, manic cuts and editing, color filters, an "IN YOUR FACE EXTREME!" attitude and crass images. It was the MO of the time.

  • LMAO "in your face extreme!" made me laugh, but it`s true XDD they were all like that

  • i think the ads should stay like this

  • This commercial doesn't fit NiGHTS. They should have made it more peaceful and no dissing other consoles.

  • The Japanese commercial was more peaceful and better than the edgy US one.

  • Nights is still a beautiful game. I still play it to this day on my Saturn. They got one thing right, there really has never been a game as unique as Nights. :)

  • It's Funny how Nights it's out for PS2 now.....

    .....12 years later

  • only in japan though, i got a copy shipped to me though, can't wait to see the updated graphics!

  • I have the PS2 ver. Wait til you play it. you might not like the controls (Analog)

  • @Yagya I wish it was released in America. :-(

  • Oh!! I remember this commercial! It's still funny! =D

  • good game

  • I really like NiGHTS into Dreams I really do, but by the look of this commercial, Sega of America has no idea what kind of game thy developed. This game is AMAZING!

  • The new NiGHTS is quite fun.

  • First Sega gave Nintendo some low blows in their ads and then did the same thing to Sony. I guess they didn't believe in a little thing called karma. Too bad, they did have some great games.

  • i'm not talking about graphics i mean the quality of games

  • then you should've said that.

otherwise it's like you're comparing a system to a single game.

Playstation did have a shitton more releases than the Saturn, thus having far more quality games, but some of the exclusives for the saturn are considered gems.

    NiGHTS

    Virtua Cop

    all the Panzer Dragoons

    Dragon Force

    Radiant Silvergun

are some of the top dogs, if you ever consider giving a saturn a go, give those games a shot as they are really quality titles.

  • your "imo" is just that, an "imo"

Saturn could actually process 2-d a lot better than the playstation. it was big in Japan, if iirc they're still releasing a game or two every so often for the saturn over there because it runs 2-d games so well..

i don't think i've ever heard of lasting support like that for the playstation.

  • jk.bjkb

    bj

nkl LMAO i remeber seeing diss commerical it was real trippy back then

  • Haha. I love commercials like this that diss the competition.

  • Beware of the flying giant purple clown head!! xDDDD YYYAAAAAARGH SEGA! hahahaha

  • agree i love my Sega from 16-bits to dreamcast... im not a big sony fan but there were alot of games that made me bought the console and i think it's worth it. Now, it's all about the Wii60! HAWT! and pc coz i play wow : / lol

  • I had both systems at the time. Sega Saturn had some bad ass games that no one ever played. Dragon Force and Guardian Heros were much better than anything on psx at the time. Except for resident evil, I dont remember playing my playstation as much as my Saturn.

  • "Fly, plaything, fly."

Now that just cracks me up. The PlayStation certainly did fly though. It flew off the friggin' shelves. What did Sega Saturn do though? It crashed and burned.

  • but it still has its own fanbase. and they are rabid fans indeed.

  • sega used to be so arrogant. Now, they 're just pathetic.

  • YAAAAAAAA RRRRRRRRRGH sega is REALLY MAD RIGHT NOW RRRRRRGGHH! And that's basically how those commercials were.

  • awesome....
