The Hibs stadium could hold 60,000+ during the days of the famous five. But that was before the tier that sat above the east terracing got removed, the away dunbar end got quartered, and the cowshed got seats. By 1980 hibernian stadium at a squeeze could perhaps accomadate 30,000
that would have been minted seeing the ground like that the last that i seen was the old west The east in this video this cool unlike the shity new east
imagine they had a 60000 stadium now? ive never seen 58000 empty seats before, they havent won a cup in 109 years yet starting this years campaign against a team two divisions lower they could only muster what 5000? great support right enough - famous for never being there that is, how many did they take to hampden for THE semi final? two minibuses and a ford granadas worth - joke team, even the trams engender more pride in edinburgh than this hobo junkie lot
hey guys i am a staunch supporter of hibernian but because i live in greece i do not have the opportunity to inform myself about hibs.however, this summer i am going to come to edimburgh so i hope to learn more about the club
God, football grounds had so much more character and individuality back then - and the terraces gave games a real atmosphere. Today, stadiums are increasingly identikit out-of-town bowls, with no terraces and everything commercialised and packaged for high-paying "hospitality" guests. Back then football was still a genuinely working-class sport, rooted in local communities. Now, it's controlled by Sky - only the tv audiences count.
@TheSgtsteiner Learn to spell if your going to insult people bawbag. You cant spell smack or leith but managed to get idiot correct, funnily enough.Maybe you should take your head out your arse more often and get a life.
Glorious memories - beating sporting lisbon in the second half 5-1, beating Liverpool 1-0 and taking the greatest Leeds team Bremner, Lorimer etc to penalties - but the greatest game in history was the one on New Years Day - 7-0! GGTTH!!!
I remember a Scottish Cup replay in '73 against Rangers mid-week and the crowd for that game was officially just over 49,000. Taking into account the kids that would have been lifted over the turnstyles, people sneaking in, and the fact that the records weren't that accurate, anyway, and I reckon there were over 50,000 at that game. It's the only game I can remember where we were packed in like sardines. Rangers won the game 2-1, getting their obligatory penalty about 10-15 mins before the end.
Regarding the point about how the stadium hadn't changed since the 1950s,and the assumption that the capacity would still be the same. Don't forget that there was legislation passed in the wake of the Ibrox disaster that slashed all capacities, even though the stadia hadn't physically changed. For evidence check out Scottish Cup Final crowds, which were routinely 100000+ up until 1973 when the legislation took effect.
First went in 1974 it seemed really noisy n busy! Remember going on the east stand in the early 80's a lot of the time you'd have to shout to the nearest person!
I can remember 3000 kicking around on that huge terracing during the dark days of Bertie Auld's time in charge. No fan of all seater grounds but ER is much better nowadays and will be top class after the east is rebuilt this season end.
Great memories. I remember going with my dad and getting a lift over the turnstyles with dads cans in my pocket. For the record 65k plus was the record attendance !!!
lol, ER held 60k in 1980. come on we all know what it held,it was a couple of thousand more than today. do you really think people are going to beleive 30 years ago Hibs had a 60k stadia. i was there plenty of times then!
your soundy like a sulkky schoolboy, lad. As i said Ive been going to easter road since late 70's and evry time i was there there were 10/13k,depending on game! GHibs got 60k. show us the evidence then ill believe you. not evidence from the 20's or 40's,when we all got huge attendances but the 50k+ as u say!we all support our clubs but come on be realistic mn! Ive sonme fond memories of easter road in the 1980's. u were the only lads to try it with us. fair play 4 that
Mr Eats. I didn't say we GOT crowds of 60k, I simply said that the CAPACITY was about 60k - two very different things. Now you have chosed to jump on my stat that we GOT crowds of 60k in 1980, something that you have incorrectly assumed. Please reconsider your line of argument. Best wishes.
The Hampden of today occupies the same portion of land as it did in the 30s and 40s but back then they managed to cram 147,000 into the stadium. It's fairly easy to explain, it was down to total lack of crowd control. Stadiums today have become like cinemas, plenty of leg room for everyone, but strip away the seating and you'll EASILY manage to fit 3 times the folk into that same space. Capacity of modern day Easter Rd times by 3? 51,000 - and that's without the huge 1970s East Stand.
Easter Road held about 35,000 at this time. On the 28 February 1973, we played Rangers in a midweek Scottish Cup replay game in the afternoon (due to power cuts) and the crowd was 49,000. Hibs lost 1 - 2 on the day. This had been out biggest crowd for many years and there's no way you would have got another 11,000 into the ground!
Interesting, but the best thing was the view from the away end towards Arthurs Seat, usually better than looking at the pitch as Hibs were generally awful in the 1980s. The chicken shed looked horrible, would have been better with terracing at that end too. Bring back the terraces. Now consultation is under way to convert East side to a new stand. Then it will look just like every other shoebox stadium. Progress? I wont be back.
superb video, never seen easter road like that with the east stand so big. I sit in the east stand just now and the atmosphere is brilliant. It must have been amazing back then. I hope when they re-build the east stand they make it different from the other stands we have now. It should be unique!
According to the StMichael "Soccer Yearbook" of 1985, the Capacity of Easter Road was 29,464...
