OMG for as much as Amy wants to speak, I feel that "queer community" has a lot to say aside from her particular message. All you queers want Amy and Em speaking for you? or do you have minds of your own? Just wondering!!
"Not as glamorous" perhaps but Amy is far more beautiful than anyone the music industry pitches as beautiful. She writes songs that are brilliant, brave and kind - I just saw the Indigo Girls, my first time seeing them, on Mountain Stage, only six songs - and I was beyond impressed, I was inspired. I think she's right that's she's not what that branch of the media is looking for - she's AUTHENTIC, and that beats everything else she could possibly be. (Bless you Amy, and thanks for being you.)
I agree with you completely! I've followed the Indigo Girls my whole life due to my aunts influence. I still admire her (and Emily, of course) more than most female artists. I think they are both beautiful inside and out. That's what makes them so wonderful. Keep rockin on and stay beautiful guys!!
the comment about joni mitchell made me think....but that was some many years ago.
indigo girls are STRAIGHT UP musicians
and they write incredible songs--albeit totally differently. i have seen them together (too many times to count) and i saw amy ray, solo at slims, in san francisco in feb, or so. she took the house DOWN! and there were a lot of straight boys there!
My take: It's sexism. The world isn't against gays in music. REM can sell out any large venue, and fans know that Michael Stipe is gay. The sad reality (and this is coming from a straight, non-feminist, non-Leftist woman who loves to play guitar) is that the world just doesn't like to see women playing any instrument aggressively. Basically, as long as you're "pretty" with your instrument, you're accepted. It's tragic.
monalisasmoustache: Oh, my dear, not true! They both died when I was a child (I'm 47), but I remember them fondly. In fact, I own a home in the Larkspur (Marin County) redwood grove where Janis resided at one point - the same neighborhood where Jerry Garcia once lived. It's full of great ghosts. :-)
@NatureGirl62 Indeed. Take a look at Heart, for example. Nancy Wilson was accepted for her kick-ass guitar playing only because she was also a stunner. In fact, they began focusing more on Nancy than Ann, even though Ann is the lead singer, because of Ann's weight. Talk about screwed-up image portrayal by the media and the music production community at large.
Critics dont like earnest female musicians? I have to query that assertion. Joni Mitchell always got pretty great press, and she's sure enough earnest and political too.

It's not just the queer community, Amy. It's people who appreciate deep meaningful music. But if it would help, I would switch teams for you. ;)

NatureGirl you must be too young to remember Janis Joplin or Mama Cass.

Why bite the hand that feeds you?
What other talk show host even HAS these kinds of guests on and has them talk frankly and at length?
