This idea of religion as a virus reminds me of the Neal Stephenson book Snow Crash, which explores the idea of religion as having a connection to an actual virus and being sexually transmittable. Aside from the hilarity of fiction imitating fact, guilt is the ultimate leash. Nobody needs to be holding the other end for you to choke yourself with it. As for why restrictive rules on sex are more popular then orgies, stable relationships are tried and true methods for raising offspring/heirs.
It's a shame that this show calls itself, "The Atheist Experience." It certainly has nothing to do with my experience as an atheist. Most of my friends are spiritual in one way or another; primarily catholics or protestants.
Of course, then again, I live in Wisconsin, where people are generally more educated and progressive than those of the bible-belt states.

If you had said there was no mathematical or logical proof you would have been right :).
1) Only mathematical formula and abstract logic work in proofs; and thus asking for proof that a God either does or does not exist is like asking for the volume of an object to be measured in newtons. Like you said its impossible. So there will never be proof that a god exists. However it is entirely possible to say that we can conclude beyond any reasonable or rational doubt that there is NO God.
2) Since there is no evidence that can confirm any theory with 100% certainty the only thing that can be between rational conclusion and 100% proof is the "doubt".
But the "doubt" has to be rationalized for it to be considered valid as well. In order to establish the ambiguity which validates the "doubt" there must be legitimate evidence for both sides of the argument to suggest that either side could be a legitimate conclusion to that argument.
3) And as there is only evidence against the existence of a god and the conjecture of "God exists" presents no previous knowledge or legitimate evidence for the existence of a god there is no establishment of ambiguity. Without rational ambiguity there can be no rational amount of doubt. So without and beyond any rational or reasonable doubt there is No God.

Now, i will speak to your specific critique. Religion is undoubtedly a tool for existential angst, and more over is is one of the best tool the masses have. This is self evident, and almost needs no explanation. Every thinking thing experiences existential angst, where are modes of behavior lead us to an interior struggle centered around our place in the world...
Religion for whatever reason (they are numerous) became the institution to massage this angst, because it posits an answer to this angst, and provides a "therapy" for the individual in dealing with it.
Religion does not have a monopoly on this, but for many it is the best and because of its evolution, has adapted the most useful tools, for the most people. I don't know what else I could say, if you have more specific questions, I might provide an answer.

1) Perhaps our schooling systems are different. Here, if you answer a question correct, you get +1, if you leave a question blank, you get +0, and if you get a question wrong, you get -1. So leaving blank is not the same as getting it wrong.

This idea of religion as a virus reminds me of the Neal Stephenson book Snow Crash, which explores the idea of religion as having a connection to an actual virus and being sexually transmittable. Aside from the hilarity of fiction imitating fact, guilt is the ultimate leash. Nobody needs to be holding the other end for you to choke yourself with it. As for why restrictive rules on sex are more popular then orgies, stable relationships are tried and true methods for raising offspring/heirs.

It's a shame that this show calls itself, "The Atheist Experience." It certainly has nothing to do with my experience as an atheist. Most of my friends are spiritual in one way or another; primarily catholics or protestants.
Of course, then again, I live in Wisconsin, where people are generally more educated and progressive than those of the bible-belt states.
The point is that religion isn't the problem. Nor is atheism the solution. Rather, secular-mindedness should be our highest goal.

@48acar19 Real Christians have the Holy Ghost. You are not wise by reading the whole Bible. Anyone can sit down and read the Bible. You have to live by it as well. I have never read the the whole but I'm still saved. To be a Christrian is to accept Jesus Christ as your Personal Savior. "If thou shalt confess wih thy mouth the LORD Jesus, and believe in thine heart that God hath raised Him from the dead, thou shalt be saved(Romans 10:9)". You also need a Spirit of Discernment. Ask God for wisdom.

I read a static lately that 90% of christians haven't read the whole bible. I have that's why I'm a non-believer. It's the 10% that I really wonder about. The 90% I would just call ignorant, but the rest must be plain stupid.

Neither of these are 100% absolutely certain just like it's not absolutely certain i'm writing a Youtube comment right now. Science does NOT deal with 100% but 99.9999% certainty. If you had said there was no mathematical or logical proof you would have been right :).

1) Only mathematical formula and abstract logic work in proofs; and thus asking for proof that a God either does or does not exist is like asking for the volume of an object to be measured in newtons. Like you said its impossible. So there will never be proof that a god exists. However it is entirely possible to say that we can conclude beyond any reasonable or rational doubt that there is NO God.

But the "doubt" has to be rationalized for it to be considered valid as well. In order to establish the ambiguity which validates the "doubt" there must be legitimate evidence for both sides of the argument to suggest that either side could be a legitimate conclusion to that argument.

That is not what an agnostic is! Common misconception. Agnostic is the stand point that supernatural beliefs, including deities, by their very nature, ie supernatural, are unknowable ie, cannot be proven by science. Coined by Thomas huxley, AKA Darwin's Bulldog, in 1860.

No sir, I disagree. Atheism may remain a minority position, but only because the masses don't want to let go of their warm and fuzzy feeling of afterlife, an all powerful protector, etc.
Religion is like taking a test, answering every question, but only getting a few correct. Atheism is like taking a test, answering only the ones you know, and getting all of those correct.
I don't see the point in having so many wrong answers in exchange for a few correct.

I don't mean to say that an atheist is never wrong about anything, just that in matters concerning the metaphysical, we don't assert that we know answers that cannot be known. That is all.
And please, I don't think I am on higher ground, although it might be true in some cases (4200 feet above sea level...). I don't think I'm any better of a person, I just think some people need more of an emotional support than I do, and religion provides that for them.
But it does not answer any questions.

ah you do assert something you can't know metaphysically, i.e that there is no god, and that is not all that you assert metaphysically without knowing, for example atheists typically assert there is no object morality, a metaphysical position you also cannot know.

1) I don't assert that there is no God. I say that I don't know if there is a God, so I will live my life as if there is not one.
2) There is no contradiction. Someone who requires more emotional support is in no way inferior. They are simply different from me, no better, no worse.
About morality, you are probably correct, I had not considered that. Personally, I try not to assert anything as factual, and just leave it all as "my thoughts."

Religion for whatever reason (they are numerous) became the institution to massage this angst, because it posits an answer to this angst, and provides a "therapy" for the individual in dealing with it.
Religion does not have a monopoly on this, but for many it is the best and because of its evolution, has adapted the most useful tools, for the most people. I don't know what else I could say, if you have more specific questions, I might provide an answer.

1) Perhaps our schooling systems are different. Here, if you answer a question correct, you get +1, if you leave a question blank, you get +0, and if you get a question wrong, you get -1. So leaving blank is not the same as getting it wrong.
2) I disagree with you. I don't think anyone is better than anyone else, just that we are different from each other. I am being honest. They may be in a worse position in some situations, but (cont.)
