It wasn't until the Normans invaded in 1066 that the Welsh lost their independence.A draconium Feudal system was introduced were greedy dukes sliced up large swaves of land for their gain -including Wales.Lost was the class of the 'free peasant' enjoyed under Saxon and Welsh rule.
the English and Celts were not always opposed as some modern day historians suggest! In the 7th century Heathen King Penda of Mercia allied with King Cadwaldr of Gwynedd. They were uniting their armies to defeat Saxon Oswald of Northumbria-Oswald ,a devout Roman christian was under guidence of the Pope to destroy indepedent Celtic Christianity and the Pagan beliefs of the Mercians.
The alliance of both Royal households of Penda and Cadwaldr went even further with Pendas sister marrying Cadwaldr and Penda marrying with Gwynned royalty!!!
While William Wallace WAS a man of the people, Glyndwr was not. Glyndwr was ambitious and ENTIRELY content with oppressive English rule over Wales until it did not work for him.
Glyndwr wholly exploited the disaffected and yes, deserted them in our hour of need.
Re Wallace it's awkward. The Scots monarchy was Normano-Scots and long alienated from the romantic view of the Highland chieftains etc. Remember that Wallace was betrayed by his own...
can you imagine how good a hollywood movie about owain glyndwr would be, the last prince of wales. it would be a massive hit just like braveheart and gladiator only better!
fought the english to the last? your having a laugh!!! He scarperred whimpering disguised as a monk and lived in the lap of luxury in ENGLAND for GOD SAKE!!!
Glyndwr deserted Wales to the last!!!! He knew the hardship he bestowed on Wales but kept away.
That monk story is probably nothing but English propaganda, just like when the Normans dug up "King Arthur". Glyndwr was a man of his times, a product of his times and no one would pretend he were a saint, none of them were, but when all is said and done he is the last native prince of Wales to truly give the Saxon a run for his money, for that he is remembered. As for the Marcher system, well he was born into that system and knew no other so he can hardly be blamed for it.
Glyndwr is Welsh propaganda. he did not care about Wales. He was ambitious. His career was in tatters when the King died, he was going to lose everything because he sympathised with the dead English King. he made his move before it was too late and used many of us as spear and sword fodder, even his family. If my family was captured, I WOULD DIE TRYING TO SAVE THEM. He was no native prince! He was self-proclaimed, by people he was going to 'look after' very handsomely if he won the war.
Fair enough! But who are we to judge the actions of men who lived so long ago and had such different beliefs and ways of looking at things than ourselves? I don't think we should make a saint of Glyndwr, but I don't think he was as bad as you say either- he was a "politician" of his time and politics is always a dirty game.
You've got it :) Glyndwr WAS a politician, and one of the bloody best at that. That is where all this leads. All history has politics between the lines, but Welsh history is particularly riddled with it. The wealth of the few, is always the culprit. The problem is how real everday people were used in the 'games of chess'.
Historically, Welsh are mostly victims but reality proves they were VERY cosy with English monarchy when it suited (including the house of Gwynedd dynasty).
Have a look at ManInCognito on a discussion to see the average English attitude... Anne Robinson and the Welsh, that prick Giled Corin and so and so on. I don't hate any individual because of who they are, but at the same time I do who is ruining my country and wrecking my culture too...
In Cornwall we have similar issues with the various rebellions. It still doesn't change the King of England's genocide against the innocent and powerless.
100% AGREE there. We have been told by people above us what is right and wrong then we discover the hypocrisy of them. Wales and Cornwall are brainwashed into believing that England is an eternal enemy yet we find it is ok for them to prosper from them. We should not fall victim to this divide and rule, that is my angle. Without divide and rule much more could be achieved for the masses but the few, will not want that.
You have to agree that a lot of English have has a crap attitude to the Welsh and the Cornish for years though, leaving aside the Medieval stuff. They sowed the seeds of hate and now they reap it.... Welsh are all sanctimonious sheep-shaggers and Cornish a bunch of quaint inbred fisherman... Fuck 'em I say.
yes I definately agree... thats the crap that got me started enjoying the medieval stuff. BUT what does it start making us become?? There are PLENTY of people who vent the glorious anti-english spew but behind 'closed doors' profit and benefit from them.
Dont forget, as we are brainwashed to hate all England, the English are brainwashed to hate us too. I have seen first hand how anti-english middle class Welsh prosper from England.... BUT DONT WANT YOU TO DO IT
The King of England's genocide would not have been possible without collaborators. The collaborators and assasins prospered massively from the killings and were given lands and wealth for their betrayals of their fellow countrymen. They barely recieve a mention in the history books. Discovering who these traitors are is impossible although a few are known. Yet it is believed many large estates are still owned by traitors familes.....
Da yw cael gweld y Crach yn cael ei gyfle [hynny yw- proffwyd/bardd Glyndwr] i ddeud ei Ddeud. Ymlaen i Hyddgen hogia bach- ymlaen i Hyddgen!! O ia, fel ofynnodd y dyn isod, pa bryd bu digwydd y diwrnod yn y fidio?
YEAH make a movie 18+ like braveheart but with better graphics and more english dead.

I believe that Glyndŵr’s illegal and obnoxious rebellion failed to sack Caernarfon and murder its innocent inhabitants.

William Wallace was a belted knight and a nobleman.
Do you want the truth?

Ahh yes.... Wallace, a belted knight and a nobleman. Knighted by........ Scots!!!
Glyndwr was part of the evil English Marcher system that damned us (Welsh) people into squalor and disease.
Ooohee... What a hero.
