They started it to honor the father of one of the Maori players on the team who had passed away and it is now a tradition. It is BYU and they have a tradition of having many South Pacific players on their team.

Many of BYU football students are Hawaiian or are from Hawaii. Actually, many of them spend their summers runing Polynesian tourist attraction/park in Hawaii. It's pretty cool. Anyways, they do the Haka at the attraction. Believe it or not, Hawaiian and New Zealand people are very closely related, were both settled by the same type of Polynesian ancestors.
