Well, you have to think how small they have to look for Americans. Once there was a letter to Trains magazine with some guy rattling on how European trains look like model railways because he saw Flying Scotsman one time on American rails... ;-)
Yes. 4472 did a tour of the USA in the 70's (?) and was left their when the owner went broke. She was not the first British loco and train to tour all or part of the US. The London Midland & Scottish sent the Royal Scot (She was caught by WW2 and stayed in the US until after the war). The GWR sent a King Class loco complete with train to tour the US in the 20's (?). All had to be fitted with bells, cow-catchers and head lamps.

Was the loco depot fitted up with coloured lights for this event. I agree with your comment on regular steam, I visited Wolsztyn in 1996.

The British loading gauge is significantly smaller than Europes. Something that is regretable and expensive to put right.
