I study Arabic Language and Literature in Turkey. So Arabic songs r very important for me and Oum Kalthoum is the best songer of the arab world I've listened... I added this song to my mobile and listen to in the bus while come home from the university. And I cry when I listen to "enta omry" even I'm in the bus..
i wanna cry and smile and jump and lay down and close my eyes and give in to the magic of this woman...... god i love her!!!! my mom always tells me that my grandfather said that she is the only woman the he might leave my grandmother for.... my grandmother knew that and still loved her... she couldn't help but love her
Arabs, Turks, Greeks, Jews... All of them love her highness. Because we are mediterranean :) east mediterranean. Ahh resplendent istanbul, great kahira, sweet iskenderiyyah and dear beirut... these are oum kalthoum's cities, paris and new york justin bieber's.
oh the vocal and lyrics just breaks my heart... that she sings of ecstatic love which is so rare and finds it so later in life .. ohhhhh hope she is with him from that point on!!!! Hallelujah!! xx ~
all this while, ive been listening to Sherine and Nacy Ajram's songs...never heard of Umm kulthum till one day I saw an article about her in Malaysia's newspaper... now i know why she is still the most unforgettable legend...her voice is so powerful and so magical... she is not singing but SERENADING instead...i love the lyrics of this song, so touching...will never stop listening to this...it will be my lifetime wasted..lolz..regard from malaysia...
The star of the arab world, the voice of the arab world, the woman who united jews, christians and muslims in the arab world with her voice. what a woman. We miss you oum kalthoum, from the westcoast of morocco till the north of Syria, we miss you
I am Chaldean. My mother and father came to Australia from Iraq, and they played this tune all the time. As a small child, and in my early 20's in Australia, I never appreciated this music up until my early 30's, because I knew no better. She is most impressive indeed. Now, I realise what I have missed. I salute "The Star of The East".
Thank you very much for posting it with the English subtitles. It is so moving. This is one of my favorite songs. I just love the reaction of the audience. Wow, do they really get into it!
these songs by the legend of all musicians is unbeatable-talk of Mozart, and others-talk of Beatles--NO WAY--they can not beat the Mother of all mothers.
Your eyes took me back, To my bygone days, They taught me to regret, The past and its pain, All I saw, Before my eyes saw you, It's a lifetime wasted, How can they count it on me ?
Her ability to produce approximately 14,000 vibrations per second with her vocal cords, her unparalleled vocal strength (no commercial microphone utilized for singing could withstand its strength, forcing her to stand at a 1- to 3-meter radius away from one
@monme89 That sounds pretty much like a legend, because microphones (even ancient ribbon mics) can withstand up to 110-120dB, that is, 1/8 of the sound level a jumbo jet would produce. If Umm Kulthum had been able to do that, she would have become almost deaf herself. :)
I miss Um Kulsoom. I always listened to her since I was a kid. She made me understand How I should try to Love My God. We all try to love our Beloved all our life. But only a few of us succeed. Akh Akh Akh.
I used to listen to Ummi Kulsum (it's our spelling) when I was a boy in 60's and when it is going to have a Moslem's great fasting periods on Ramadhan in my country. Most of state radio station at that time played her golden voice. thanks for having this video today. I re-enjoy her emerald songs...
I am an Israeli. My parents and grandparents came to Israel from Iraq. In my childhood this song and a lot of other arabic songs were played in my grandparent's home and I didnt like it then.
But now, every time I hear this song I get excited with tears down my throat.
@yanivshalom76 I am American Arab and also had a simlar experience. My father would play this song for hours into the night back in the 60's and 70's. I hated it as well. Now I can't get enought of her spellbinding performances on Youtube. Peace.
I am a french taiwanese woman from senegal. My husband is a saudi qatari from sharjah. We listened to this music in paris under the moon eating kabsa and falafel. Om kalthoum is the best artist ever.
When I only heard the music from 6:23 to 7:34 I thought it was so beautiful.. when I came back to the video and saw the translation, I cried.. I listened and read it again a few times and cried even more... it is so beautiful, to think of finding a person to illicit that kind of emotion and feeling makes every day worth it
look how beautifully dressed the audience were back then.. how classy and elegant... so civilized... what happened to today's audience in the arabic world... it sadness me!!! we lost the talent and we also lost the audience.. so sad!!
@girlyouneedtoquit: Of course it does. Believe me I know what matters is how people are on the inside. But the outside is a reflection of the inside. So my point is the art and the music of these yester years are a reflection of an “elegant” and more refined society... and that makes me sad.

This takes me back to the lovely sunroom of the apartment I rented in Taza on my first visit to Morocco, and the words are perfect. Breakfast and Oum Kaltoum, what a pleasure.
I have the chills. I romanced my wife to this music when we first met. Iam a black man from new orleans, she is a native eskimo from alaska. My friend from Bahrain gave me the album. we do not know the words but we felt its beauty. Thank you for the translation. i have arabic friends who dont like to listen to it because it makes them cry. I now understand
@sandiegorandolph Some small corrections for you friend, the translation on the video are interpretations, I feel it is better if you know the metaphors and "figure of speech" because they give strong descriptions.
"... regret the past and its WOUNDS"
"... or tasted in life but the taste of WOUNDS"
"...fear that life would runaway" - Life in its new beautiful image
"... why haven't your love MET me earlier"
The song is not complete here. If you'd like, I'd be happy to complete the translation
Tnx for the translation! I liked her before without understanding the lyrics but just for the music. Now that I can enjoy the lyrics I really realize what she means. Great!!!!!
Wow! I had been looking for this video for a long time, after watching to a very short video posted before in YouTube.
