Diamonds were so abundent in Africa in the early 1900's, that one dollar would buy a one carat stone. The DeBeers formed a cartel to keep the price of diamonds high and develope all sorts of advertising campaigns to get people to buy them.  Plus, now you have lab made stones that are so close to natural that a special machine is needed to identify them. Only big or colored natural stones have any real value, small (1 carat or less) are not scarce and have little real value.
